When one looks back on the days gone by, there will be some people and some incidents that you will recall with great fondness. Focus on these people whose memories always bring a smile to the lips and warmth in the heart and you will be transported to a world of nostalgia. If you correlate some of your successes with the influence these people have had on your life, you would be amazed at the volume of positive inputs they have given you. These inputs could be as varied as having full faith in you, encouraging you,  guiding in you, comforting you, giving you tips, empathizing with you, allowing you the freedom to pursue your passion, supporting you when you falter etc.

Here are a set of people who would be ideal people to associate with and benefit from.

Those close to you.  Beginning with parents and siblings, the list includes friends, colleagues, teachers and seniors. Of course it is possible that some of those close to you would find it hard to empathize with your thoughts and views but it is in your interest to give their counter point of view a hearing. The best part of their support is their response is always keeping your best interest in mind.

Those who have a natural flair to be cheerful and positive. Some of these people could be from the above list but it is equally possible that you do meet others who radiate positive energy. It could be trainers, motivational speakers, superiors from other departments, neighbors etc.

Those who you find knowledgeable, fair, impartial and open. These could include people in positions of authority like the principal of an institution or a senior academician, senior executives in your organization, experienced professionals, a friend’s parents etc.

Those who are good listeners.  Anyone who is willing to lend you an ear, pay attention to you and express interest in your thoughts, views, hopes and aspirations. They may counter question, raise objections, have a different point of view but as long as they pay a lot of attention to you, you can be sure their patience and genuine interest will accelerate your progress.

Those who display appreciation, give proactive encouragement and offer creative solutions. You often meet people from varied backgrounds, experiences and views at seminars, conferences, meetings etc. It is possible that they have some insights that are congruent to your line of thinking. If they display interest in your views, ask relevant questions and give encouraging feedback you can be sure you can profitably tap into their vast repository of knowledge, experience and wisdom.

Action Points:

  1. Make a list of 5 people at least 2 of whom are senior citizens and one of whom is younger than you who you believe would be excellent people to associate with and who would appreciate, understand and encourage you.
  2. Can you list out 3 of the best advice that you ever received. How did advice have a major bearing in your life?
  3. Who was the one person who offered you the best solace when you were very low or depressed? How and what did the person do or say to reassure you?

Happiness is that state of mind where negativity is banished, optimism exudes and one easily finds a reason no matter what, to remain cheerful. A simple test to the relative happiness quotient is truthfully answering the question ‘Do I suffer from Monday morning blues?’  If you can be as cheerful on a Monday morning as you are on a weekend, be sure you are blessed with abundant happiness.

However the vast majority reading this would say ‘I ain’t so lucky; so what is the secret to being happy?’  So here goes…

See the positives   No matter what the situation, there is a positive and a negative side to it. Focus on the positives. Unfortunately most of us are inclined to see the negatives partly due to force of habit, sometimes due to our jealous nature and occasionally because we limit our imagination. E.g. A student getting 99/100 can either enjoy his/ her success or can keep brooding over how/where/why that 1 mark was lost. There are positives even in extreme situations like failure/ death/ illness etc. but we have to imaginatively identify those positives and then happiness won’t be far behind.

Manage your thoughts Some of us are extremely imaginative in seeing the worst case scenario.  These people can spot a problem in every opportunity; they can rattle of a dozen reasons why something positive can’t happen and they can use their vivid imagination to make a mountain out of a molehill. E.g. You suddenly discover that your mobile phone is missing. Even as you frantically search, your mind has conjured up visions of never finding it, the possibility that someone has robbed it, the probability that anyone who finds it will not return it and quite often extreme frustration at ones on carelessness. Assuming that you find that mobile, instead of being really happy, a new set of questions would pop up. How did it fall of? Did it fall off or did someone try to pinch it unsuccessfully? If I didn’t find it all my contacts would have been lost; I would have to buy a new phone if I didn’t find it etc would be added thoughts that would puncture the happiness of having located the missing mobile phone.

Invest in relationships A good incubator of happiness is the society around you, the people you interact with and you being accessible, social and helpful. Relationships offer support, comfort and motivation essential ingredients to foster a happy environment. E.g. when there is a tragedy in the form of illness or death or failure happiness is hard to come by. Yet with the outpouring of concern, care and consolation, happiness is ignited much faster even if the grief takes a while to be overcome.

Live don’t merely exist Don’t just be creatures of habits. The vast majority of salaried employees follow the dictum 2 punches (attendance) and one lunch. Quiz these people on how life is and invariably the reply will be tinged with boredom, frustration, exasperation, irritation and indifference. Those who do not value their lives and make it count would always find life too tough, very hard to bear and extremely boring. The trick is making life interesting by being more open to ideas, attempting the challenging, taking calculated risks and doing things differently. E.g. Give in to your inner craving and just do it. My blog is an outcome of such a whim and if you have read so far it is proof that I haven’t wasted my time. My happiness is in having so many of you engrossed and engaged in my writing.  So when are you going to find the happiness in your passion?

Enjoy the moment The London Olympics 2012 are just a few months away. Some athletes and sportsmen have made the cut. Others have fallen by the way. The more unlucky ones have been waylaid by injury. Yet even the ones who do not make it to the Olympics will still actively engage in their sport for they have learnt to enjoy every moment of their lives. E.g. Even as I am writing this I am acutely aware that I haven’t written for over 2 weeks. This long hiatus has also dulled my enthusiasm, dried up my creative juices and has made writing this post a tad more tough. Yet, I am reveling in the reality that I have not lost my touch and I have put behind all the difficulties that impeded my regular output. Hopefully the happiness at being able to indulge in my passion is evident in this post.

Action Points:

  1. Can you find something unique in the way the title/ heading  of each paragraph was developed? The big secret to happiness is hidden in the way the paragraph headings were developed.
  2. List out 3 situations where you would be most happy. Have you experienced any of these situations?
  3. Name an object, thing, place, animal and person that immediately conjures up a happy image for you. Why do you think the said name evokes such happiness for you?

In an ideal world everything would be in order, there would discipline, the mood would be idyllic and the setting serene and majestic. In short everything would be perfect. Perfection is also a virtue that everyone would love to embrace and hence it is a virtue that is mistakenly kept as a yardstick to judge competence, efficiency and excellence.  The reality though is that, there is imperfection all around, chaos abounds and uncertainty is the only certainty.  Coping with this reality of imperfection is the real challenge.

However since we are ingrained with the ideology that ‘perfection’ be the norm we get limited by one or more of the following ‘perfection traps’

We pursue perfection. Are you one of those who can spot a slight tilt in the photo frame hung on a wall or someone whose attention is immediately drawn to the broken tile on the floor or someone who is obsessed with order, neatness and immaculate appearance? If you answer is yes, then chances are that you are a perfectionist and anything not up to your standards can be exceedingly distressing to you.

Remember it is ok to be imperfect; but that is no excuse not to aim for perfection.

We imagine perfection to be a stumbling block. Are you waiting for the perfect moment to begin working on your wish list? Are you afraid to try something new because we want to be perfect? Do you write poems or stories but keep them hidden because we fear criticism?

Remember perfection is a relative thing; you will definitely be better than someone else in something that you do. So why not try?

We crave for perfection but hate the discipline. While we envy those who are orderly, disciplined and immaculate we would hate to emulate them for fear of having to work in an organized and disciplined manner. Perhaps we want to be a sports icon or a bestselling author; alas the discipline required to work on our dreams seems too tough. Have you wished to be a magician or at least master a couple of magic tricks? What stopped you from trying out a few magic tricks and then perfecting it?

Remember that perfection is not a gift but is an outcome of diligent effort, sacrifice and self discipline. Let us make a beginning and while we may not be perfect perhaps we would see a change in us for the better.

We can cope with chaos but cannot fathom a perfect beginning. If there was no chaos we would have no opportunity to try out new things. It is because there is imperfection around that we strive to find solutions to the problems that abound. When was the last time you had a daring haircut that shook all those around? Ever experimented with some daring outdoor activities? Did you wish you could do something for the under privileged, the illiterate, the marginalized? So why haven’t you done something yet?

Remember that imperfection is a reality that challenges us; use it as a motivator to innovate, experiment and discover.

 Action Points:

  1. Prepare a wish list of things you want to achieve. Identify 3 of the items on which you will begin work within a week. What do you want to achieve within a month, a quarter and in 6 months. Assess the progress made every week.
  2.  Everyone would like to increase his/ her income. List out 3 ways in which you believe you can try to increase your income. By how much have you increased your income by the month end? Make a similar assessment every month end. Identify how and why you achieved what you set out to do or reason for not achieving your target.
