30 -The 5W's of LifeX Y and Z have always got their share of glory or infamy depending on how much you liked algebra and geometry but it is the alphabet W is that we focus on today. To begin with W has a rather awkward pronunciation but more importantly all progress is largely dependent on the answers to the 5W’s supported of course by the equally oddly pronounced H. Today we reflect on the critical role of the 5 W’s in shaping our life, our attitude and our successes.

Who am I! Your individuality is what makes you unique. Even identical twins would stand out from each other because of the differences that mark each one out. By being aware of our individual uniqueness, one can focus on strengthening ones attitude, skills, behavior and talents to contribute the world around us. Of course our uniqueness would also invite criticism, questioning, curiosity, suggestions and admiration from others who cannot possibly comprehend our individuality. Do not let that disturb you but do pay heed to it for there could be a lot of learning that emanates from such feedback. Most importantly be proud of who you are; faults, limitations, weakness notwithstanding.

What lies ahead? If the future was predictable life would be terribly boring. The wonder of waking up each day lies in the abundant mysteries that each day will unravel. There would be surprises, there would be shocks, there would be laughter, there would be tears. We value each emotion because we are blessed with the gift of experiencing these varied emotions. When we dare to explore, experiment, engage differently we are setting ourselves up for surprises and opportunities that never existed before in our limited vision. There is risk but there is larger glory beyond our comfort zone.

When life is a challenge what do I do? Each one of us has his/ her own personal challenge to cope with daily. The scope and gravity of the challenge would vary but we cannot side step these challenges. At times we get overwhelmed, other times we feel weighed down, may a time we are frustrated and almost often we get irritated and annoyed when having to deal with niggles and issues that never seem to end. Most times we have to deal only with irritants but it is the big challenges like coping with life threatening illness, being suddenly handled a pink slip, coping with a way ward offspring, getting into a financial mess bordering on bankruptcy etc. that test our character, our will, our capacity to cope and our resolve to overcome. Self belief is critical but calm rational thinking is essential too. Seeking help would not be demeaning neither would taking tough decisions be embarrassing. What is essential is not to give up, give in or surrender but to take the tough road to redemption with firm resolve.

Where the choices are equally alluring how do I decide? Every moment of your life you are making choices. Even as you read this you have the choice to continue reading or do something that you believe is more beneficial, worthwhile or important. Your choice must be based on what you think is most relevant at that point of time. It could be based on facts, it could be based on urgency, it could be based on intuition but what is important is that whatever your choice and the outcome, you must have no regrets.

Why do I feel apprehensive about the future? Frankly there is nothing that you can do about the future except to anticipate and prepare to face it. Even then, the future always surprises with its unexpected bounties and occasionally jolts us with unexpected shocks. If one were to dispassionately assess the happenings in one’s life, for the overwhelming majority the future that overcame us had largely always aided and abetted our growth, prosperity and happiness. It is true that we would all have experienced unexpected sorrow, failure and disappointment along the way but they would be far, few and in-between. A better way to tackle the future would be to try to create it; trust your instincts, take chances, work hard, follow your dreams and you will find you have arrived at your destination.

Try these:

  1. If you came in the possession of Alladin’s Lamp and were granted 3 boons, what three boons would you ask for yourself?
  2. If you were select an animal that best represents you what would be the endearing qualities that the animal has that resembles those that you possess?
  3. Can you recollect 3 crazy things that you did in your life? Did you regret doing it? What learning did you get from those experiences?

29-R U a weirdoYou did read the title of this post right, although any English language teacher would have chastened me for that style of writing. The fact is that the world is changing at a rapid pace, the styles are also keeping pace with that change (not always a good thing) and if you don’t follow the trend you would be branded a weirdo. I am betting that each one of you reading this post owns a mobile phone. If you don’t own a mobile phone, I am willing to double the bet that all those you interact with treat you like a weirdo. So the simple equation is that if you are to be seen as a normal person, an essential demonstrable accessory is owning a phone. Perhaps it is because one can buy a phone and there are plenty of options to choose from, everyone ensures he/ she has one and not be labeled a weirdo.

Now if you ask yourself or the next person you interact with, the question ‘What is the purpose of your life? Or What are the goals you have set for yourself? there is every possibility that they will think you are a weirdo for asking that. Having a purpose in life is much more challenging; partly because it cannot be bought off the shelf but largely because we are not even conscious about the options available to us and mainly because we do not want to commit to a purpose.

So how does one know if one has a purpose in life? Simple; ask yourself the question are you ready to die just now? If your answer is YES, you will understand the purpose that drives a solider to fight for his/ her country; an adventurer to undertake a risky adventure; an aid worker to risk life and limb to bring succor to war torn areas. If your answer is a resounding NO and you are just not ready to die, it simply means that you have a lot of unfinished agenda and they are unfinished because you haven’t yet clearly identified them and / or you are still aimlessly meandering through life.

So what do I do to identify the purpose of my life? This is a tougher question to answer. However it is not impossible to find an answer. Ask yourself what epitaph would best describe you and your life. This means that you would have to answer the question’ what would I want to be remembered for? The answer may not be readily available but it will help you focus your thoughts to a more meaningful goal/ objective / vision/ mission. Your purpose must be something that drives you from within. This means that you must be enthused ( this comes from you having a passion / deep interest in something), you must be able to execute it with some degree of competence ( this means you must have the skill set/ learn the techniques ) and have the motivation to pursue with passion ( this means there must be an intrinsic motivation / an inner urge). A fine example of appreciating people with a clear purpose is to recollect all your teachers that you fondly remember even though they may have be tough to deal with. The one common thread that all those whom you remember immediately is that they had the zeal and commitment and a demonstrated purpose that appealed to you and remained with you long after your academic years were over.

Remember that if you have a purpose in life – you will be LIVING not merely Existing!

28-My dayWe would really have to search hard to find people who love Monday’s. Out of the few who do, a vast majority of them would be people who have their weekly off on a day other than a Sunday, so the equivalent for Monday for them would be the day following their weekly off. So what is that about Monday’s that gives so many of us Monday morning blues? It is not that most of us are lazy; nor is it that we do not love what we do; nor is it because we would like to do what we please without the rigors of a disciplined work life ( ask any retired person and he/she will tell you how time weighs very heavily on their hands once they retire and every day is a Sunday). So then why is that Monday’s are so dreaded? Perhaps it is because we have never visualized Monday as being something useful, something special and something to be cherished. The moment one looks at Monday as being ‘My Day’ our approach to Monday would be drastically different. Our appreciation of not just Monday but every day would be much more whole hearted and you would then learn to value and look forward to each day with greater enthusiasm.

My day provides you the following:

The freedom to utilize it – Once you visualize Monday or for that matter any day as My Day, the chores of the day are no longer burdens but a means to make an honest living by doing them cheerfully, passionately and uniquely. Yes, even everyday jobs can be fun when one viewed as a personal contribution, in a personalized style leading to a fulfilled goal. It is true that you cannot avoid what has to be done but it is equally true that you have the freedom to approach and execute the task with enthusiasm, hope and an aim to do the task well. Instead of work if you were going on a picnic on a Monday, would you yearn for Monday?

A reason to begin afresh – Not just Monday’s but everyday that is My Day enables me to begin afresh. The mistakes of the past, the pain and difficulties are left behind. Start afresh, see each day as having something new and fresh to offer. Perhaps it is the beginning of a new relationship, a new job responsibility, the beginning of good times to come. Notice how athletes who do not win still compete with equal vigor in the succeeding meet. They know that each day gives them a chance to begin afresh and hopefully attain their goal. Now are you going to make use of the opportunity each day gives, to begin afresh?

A chance to do good – When each day is seen as My Day each one gets the chance to bring out the best in him/ her. The best is not just in going about doing one’s duty. The chance to do good is displayed in our approach, the small actions, the feelings we express and the attitude we bring along. Nothing beats a smile to get everyone enthusiastic. Encouragement and appreciation for others do not lag behind a smile in injecting a healthy dose of goodness around us. Listening is an essential goodness that is acute short supply and every day that is My Day gives me the chance to pay attention to others who may just be seeking to vent their feelings. Of course kindness and monetary support are two extremes of goodness that are much valued too. So what good do you plan to do today?

The opportunity to prove your worth – Have you ever noticed that the person who is most missed is the one who does the most menial of jobs; the janitor, the porter, the clerk in the office, the chauffer. Is it ironic that the Chairman and the Board of Director are never really missed though apparently they are the ones who are the highest paid and wield the most power. True they perform a function that is of a high intellectual caliber but that in no way diminishes the contribution of the menial staff. So no matter what work you do, you are performing a very important task. Each new day that is seen as My Day gives each of us the opportunity to prove our worth not by being absent but by being proactive, enthusiastic and cheerful whenever present. So can you now dress smart, move energetically, carry a big smile and fee energized this Monday and every other day that you see as MY Day?

Ample moments to live, laugh and love – A day of twenty four hours is a pretty long time if you are prisoner but is rather too little when in love. When you get Monday morning blues you are a prisoner of your thinking. The moment you visualize Monday and every other day as My Day you fall in love with each day and time flies. There is an air of expectancy, there is unbridled enthusiasm, there is skip in your step, there is laughter all around and you fall in love with your work when Monday and every other day becomes My Day. So are you ready to embrace Monday and every other day as My Day? Go forth an make the most of this Monday and every other day that henceforth you will call My Day?

Try these:

  • Do you know what a Mayday signal is? Find out about it. Ensure you do not confuse My Day with Mayday.
  • Do you have a routine for each day? How do you ensure that you make the best use of each day?
  • List out 5 good things about Monday. How can you make a Monday be more fun than a Friday evening?
  • How would you cope with sudden unexpected problems that crop up and yet remain positive and enthusiastic? e.g. Just as I was about to post this blog my computer crashed.
