4 - Making yesterday jelousOne of the biggest challenges that human beings face is feeling enthusiastic everyday and enjoying each moment of life. One way is to define a purpose / a goal for one’s own self and make this the focus for making progress. This is what largely drives entrepreneurs. The trouble is, most of us are not naturally self driven, so setting a goal itself becomes a challenge. This is particularly true with those who are employees. They are largely confronted by the same routine work, have little leeway to bring creativity into their jobs and largely feel unappreciated However, every individual can bring enthusiasm to their daily routine and life by adopting some simple steps. This is the way to make today so awesome that yesterday gets jealous.

Visualize your role as an important task in the overall scheme of things. The role that one plays in the overall scheme of things is often not know to us and as a result, we tend to undervalue our contribution. It is essential to appreciate and believe that your role is critical to the next process and also to all subsequent processes all of which lead to positive results along the way. This perspective helps one value their role and job.

Learn to appreciate others and also to identify the appreciation given by others to you. You will notice that whenever you appreciate someone genuinely you feel a sense of satisfaction. You would also observe that others too start noticing and appreciating your efforts. At times you may even get some subtle hints for improvements which are actually an appreciation of your real capabilities and potential that you can realize.

Don’t be a loner; focus on being a team player. It is possible that you are exceptionally talented and can do an outstanding job. However, it is important to be aware that your role just prepares the way for others to carry on the good work forward. While you must take pride in your abilities, it is very important that you give credit, act responsibly and work in tandem with your team members. Team members will begin to then value your contribution, start depending on you more and ensure that you are an integral part of the team process from planning to execution to sharing credit and relishing success.

Make your work environment and work a creative endeavor. Even the most mundane tasks can be made interesting and enjoyable by adding a dash of creativity. It could be as simple as varying your routine, adding zing to your work area, adopting new practices at work, delegating work where possible and taking on something different. Creativity is no ones prerogative and so each one has the potential to unleash their creativity and make their work environment and the work itself exciting, interesting and pleasurable.

Adopt a work mantra that incorporates standardization, simplification and elimination. With a little imagination, a dash of enterprise and loads of self confidence most routine jobs can be standardized. This will then enable one to simplify the job by adopting / adapting relevant technology. It is also possible that some systems that are irrelevant and superfluous can be eliminated in the process. Periodically reviewing one’s job and the relevance of each task will help one identify areas for improvement. It would also help one appreciate one’s responsibility better and it becomes a motivator to give off one’s best.

Grow in your job by taking on more challenges, grabbing opportunities and being a smart worker. Those who grow in their jobs and get a bigger role are people who have mastered the art of taking on new challenges, letting go jobs they have mastered and most importantly worked hard and also worked smartly. If one gets comfortable in doing the routine, growth will be stunted. You can do something new when you are willing to move out of your comfort zone and take on new challenges. Perhaps this would require fresh learning, possibly require more hard work and for sure involves the risk of making mistakes. Yet, new challenges provide stimulus, variety and growth prospects. Smart work is intelligently tackling the tasks on hand. This could involve experimenting, inviting problems and opening yourself to criticism. However, it could also mean realizing your potential, showcasing your talents and finding more interesting opportunities.

Go on an try to make your yesterday jealous !!!

Try this:

  1. Think of 3- 5 things that you will do to make your work space more appealing, less cluttered and a fun place to work from.
  2. Here is a little exercise to test your creativity. It is simpler than you think but you will have to visualize things quite differently to find the answer.
  3. Parking Slot No
  4. Here is another simple quiz to stimulate your grey cells. The answer to the first question is given to help you get an idea of the solution.
  • Q1. Which alphabet is a question? Y
  • Q2. Which alphabet is an insect?
  • Q3. Which alphabet is a part of our body?

It is easy to be rich…

3- 17 Jan 16 It is easy to be richMonetary riches are tangible, easy to identify and hence envied by many. It also has tremendous value, influence and power for it is a common denominator for transactions. As a result, monetary riches assume importance, play a significant role in daily life and amassing it is a prime objective of human beings. However, money has its severe limitations; it cannot be traded for happiness, peace and bliss. On the other hand, if we looked around and identified our friends almost of all them would are your friends not because they are rich but because you find happiness, peace and bliss when with them. Your friends are perhaps the best riches you can ever possess.

However, you can also be rich in words, deeds and spirit by focusing on very personal and intangible riches that you can cultivate and personalize.

Adopt good habits – We humans are creatures of habit. We tend to repeat, retrace and respond to daily happenings in almost identical fashion. Our attitudes, our beliefs and our behavior is largely influenced by the habits we have adopted and cultivated. If we cultivate the right habits we would be rich beyond measure because our responses would be exquisitely carved out, our manners and etiquettes would be prim and proper and above all we would be affable to others. Your habits enrich your interaction with others and in turn they value you.

Embrace lofty values – Your values would determine and influence your habits as also how you evolve. Your values would also determine the type of influence you exert over others for leadership is often an outcome of being steadfast to core values that are exhibited in thought word and deed. Values are like a compass that points you the right direction. Your value system determines your convictions, ability to hold your own even in the face of stiff opposition and your determination to keep going even when the odds are stacked against you. In embracing your values you enrich your spirit and your ideals.

Have a big vision Most of us meander through life simply because we do not have a big enough vision for ourselves. We work because we have to earn a living. We then end up hating our job, our routine and work becomes a drudgery. On the other hand those who progress in life, envision themselves doing work for a larger purpose. They do not see themselves as a mere cog in the wheel but aim to be the most important cog in the wheel that keeps the whole machinery going. Their big vision enables them to work with zeal, put in more effort and grow in their jobs and their life. With a big vision one can display enterprise, creativity, commitment and tangible worth. They enrich their own future and life by thinking big and widening their vision.

Stand by your commitments There is nothing as valuable as your word. A person who cannot stand by his commitment loses respect, is viewed as unreliable and is largely shunned by those who have had a bitter taste of his/ her false promises. A person who can stand by his/ her commitment gets endorsed, is respected and is trusted. Being trusted is a richness that no amount of money can buy.

Be disciplined – Our failures are not because we are not competent but because we lack the ability to be disciplined. Our ability to stick to our plans, our ability to keep going even when we do not seem to be succeeding, our ability to adopt a tough path so as to get closer to our goals require us to be disciplined. Discipline is the only way to align our values, our vision, our habits and our commitments so as to succeed in life. When we are disciplined we have an extra ordinary control over our own life. Discipline is not a virtue we can ever buy and yet it is a richness that each of us can nurture and cultivate within us.

Try this:

It is now midway through the first month of the year. You can still write down your resolutions, modify the resolutions written, write down an action plan to succeed in fulfilling your resolutions. Keep the above points in mind when doing this exercise.

What is your vision for a better city that you live in? What commitment can you make to ensure you contribute to that vision? What habits will you adopt to ensure you make significant strides towards contributing to your vision? What is the one discipline you will follow diligently to ensure that your habits and commitments are synced with your vision and values so that you can make a difference to the city you live in.

2- 10 Jan 16 A note to myselfThe beginning of the year is a an excellent time to write a note to one’s own self as a reminder of how one can pace one’s life by following some key tips. The tips are meant to guide, to inspire, to motivate and to energize one to making this year more inspiring, more productive and most importantly, most fulfilling. These tips condense the wisdom of the ages. They are only illustrative but they are enlightening and pragmatic.

Promise to treasure your time. – Life could be unfair to each one of us except for the one factor that beggar and king, poor or rich, intelligent or stupid, we are all given in equal measure TIME. Lack of time therefore can never ever be an excuse for failure. It is waste of time, inefficient use of time and not valuing time which are the real culprits for our non performance or lack of achievement. Let my focus this year be on making the best use of the precious time gifted to me!

Don’t fall in love with potential.– Look deep and you will find that you are blessed with many talents and enormous potential. The trouble is we tend to envy the potential in others that we do not posses. Worse still is the fact that we do not make any serious attempt to either discover our potential or even if know our potential squander it by our lethargic behavior, our indifferent attitude or by simply waiting for the opportune moment. Potential is like a matchstick in a matchbox; available to light things but latent if never used.

You want something doesn’t mean you deserve it – We make numerous excuses for not realizing our goals or utilizing our potential fully. The excuses largely centre around our lament that we didn’t get the right tools or the right opportunity. The reality is that even a person born with a silver spoon has to cope with his/ her limitations, create the opportunities, expend energies and work hard to make their mark in the world. Wanting something desperately is wishful thinking; working on getting it is the first step to realizing ones goals and utilizing one’s potential to the full.

Be patient but don’t procrastinate. – Waiting for the right moment is the bane of productive action. Inertia often masquerades itself as being patient. Instead of seizing the moment, which is the quality of highly successful people, those who procrastinate in the fond hope of getting the right opportunity find themselves either not starting or getting beaten at the post. Never get into a situation where you suffer from an illness called ‘paralysis by analysis’.

Be hopeful but not naive – Hope is good rock to build a foundation on. However, hope should not be used as a crutch to rationalize personal inertia, getting lured into quick rich schemes, getting duped into by glib talkers and not being decisive enough and cutting losses. When you are naïve, your belief is shallow, your confidence wavering, your dependence on others overwhelming and your judgment very faulty. When you have hope you seek a way out, you create the opportunity and you prepare yourself to grasp the chance for you are sure it is coming sooner than later.

When it is right you will know it. – When in a dilemma making a choice is tough. Yet if you are brought up with the right values, cherish the principles of being an upright person and let your conscience be your guide your choices will never go wrong. You will never feel guilty, you would be emboldened to act decisively and the consequences of your action will never give you sleepless nights. A clear conscience is the best pillow.

You don’t have to force it. – If you are denied something, perhaps it is for the best. If you are bestowed with an unexpected blessing, perhaps you richly deserved it. Whatever the gift, whatever the outcome, whatever be your feelings see it as befitting the moment. It is when we become rigid in our expectations that we try to influence the outcome and then get disturbed when the outcomes belie our expectations. Strive to improve your future but don’t try to shape the future by force.

Try this:

  1. Your friends force you to go with them for a trek. You go very reluctantly since you are not feeling too well and also because you do not like treks. Half way to the trek you twist your ankle. The pain is intense and you are annoyed and frustrated. The majority of your friends ask you sit there while they complete the climb. Two members of the group stay with you while the rest continue the trek. What will you be discussing with those waiting with you.
  2. List out the following
  • Your favorite quote or proverb
  • Your favorite book
  • Your favorite movie
  • Your favorite personality from history

Is there a common thread that binds the above choices? Can you identify that thread?

1 - 5 Jan 16 A new Year MessageSo you and I begin a New Year 2016 with a lot of hope, a bit of trepidation and tons of goodwill from many! What one needs to quickly realize though, is that it is MY life and only I can make it the best one I can. Ideally we hope this year will be a lot better than the one gone by. We ponder over our mistakes and regrets of the past, we mentally note down the yardstick of others that become our benchmark for success and we rush into life aiming to win; little realizing that we are competing only with ourselves and all we need to do is challenge ourselves to excel.

Let us pause and ponder over a few life lessons to enable us to journey with a purpose, with joy in the heart, exuding the fragrance of our unique personality and contributing to creating a better world around us.

Life is a journey not a destination – We subconsciously realize this because while we do have aspirations we rarely limit ourselves to merely realizing our aspirations. Once we attain what we aimed for we reset our aspirations higher. This is a good practice for it allows us to pace and realize our progress. Unfortunately, most times we are consciously chasing goals that are not pragmatically designed but developed with materialistic considerations in mind. We tend to believe that if we attain that destination happiness would be ours. Alas, in pursuit of those materialistic goals, we do not enjoy the joys of life, fail to appreciate the blessings we have and instead keep craving for more. The key to life is to make the most of what one has.

There are no mistakes just chances we have taken – You cannot cross a chasm in two steps; so when we come to the chasms in daily life we have to either jump or turn back. At times we misjudge the width of the chasm other times we mistimed our jump or we overestimate our ability or we were unprepared to take that leap; in all the above cases we would have failed to clear the chasm. We would also fail we did not believe in ourselves and turned away. The times we have cleared the chasm and the times we deliberately and consciously refused to take the chance only to realize later that it was the best decision you made, are the only times one succeeds. In daily life the chasms are invisible, the skills sets required opaque, the decision making has to be quick and continuous and the results may not always equal your expectations. You just have to keep taking those chances for some of them could be the giant leap that can propel you to a different level.

Make the most of the moment without wasting time on regrets – The worst mistake one can make is to go back in time and keep wallowing in the misery of the regrets we have, If only is a common enough refrain that suggests that things would have been different and life much better. We keep wondering about the possible outcome if the choices we made were different. A decision made a point in time can neither be reversed nor can the consequences be altered. Not doing anything is also a decision. The reality is that we cannot escape our responsibility nor stew in our regrets. What we can do and must do is make every moment count.

Life is not a competition but a mere challenge – Your life is a challenge for you to cope with and not a competition with the next person around you. Each of us is blessed with unique talents, abilities and capabilities. What we need to do is be aware of our strengths and ensure we utilize it to the full. We fail because we do not run our race but pace ourselves using the others around us as pacemakers. If you are a sprinter and follow a marathon runner, you are bound to fail. Similarly if you a middle distance runner and use a sprinter as the your benchmark failure is certain. Success come only when you get up and keep running no matter what. It helps to plan well, pace yourself as per your abilities and push yourself to your limits. The challenge in life is to run your own unique race well.

Make life fun as you get serious work done – Most people go through life as if on a life saving mission. Reality is that everyone has to earn his/ her living. So then why not make that living while enjoying it. True there are periods of stress and turbulence but they are far few and in between, Do we really make the best use of the rest of our time to ensure that we make our life fun, our living a joy and the world we live in a heaven on earth? Do we laugh enough, can we enjoy a relaxed environment, do we pause to smell the flowers, do we have time to stand and stare? Can I experience bliss every moment of my life?

Each new dawn gives us another opportunity – So what are you going to do with the opportunity? Would you size it or squander it? Begin today, begin now by jotting down your goals for the year. Jot down all the things that you believe will make you happy. Outline the action you would take to overcome your weakness. Commit yourself to some unique experiences that you hope to have during the course of the year. List out 3-5 friends who you would surprise this year with a unique gift. Gift yourself an expensive gift this year (write down what you really want). There is so much more that I can do each day.

Try this:

Fill in the following list for yourself

  • A unique musical program that you will attend this year
  • An animal / bird that you will sponsor this year at the local zoo
  • A new skill set that you would like to acquire
  • A place that you will visit from amongst the following ; a hospice / a prison / a mental asylum
  • Three changes you will bring in to your daily life to make your healthier/ wealthier/wiser
  • Five people with whom you have lost touch but would reconnect with this year
  • A fund raiser in which you would participate and the amount of funds you plan to raise.
