The dance of life

125 -Dance of lifeThis is perhaps an ideal time to look back and reflect on how well we enjoyed the music and dance of the year gone by. It is not that life does not bring with it a fair share of sadness, pain and hurt but what we must not overlook are the joys, the happiness and the blessings that one has been showered with. The best way to judge how the year gone by has changed us is by answering just one question ‘Did I feel / experience a positive change in me ?’ If the answer is yes you know that the dance of life was an exhilarating experience. If the answer is NO then you need to practice your steps again in the coming year for the dance of life goes on and you need to sync your steps with the music that is played.

A look at life from the prism of the various elements of dance would enable us to better appreciate how well we have grasped the ‘dance of life

Space – Whether it is a ball room dance or a solo performance, central to dance is the use of the available space. Similarly in life, we need to give space to our relationships no matter who the other person is, how close or distant they are and one must be able to adjust with those around. Children especially need to be given ample space to pursue their independence in thought word and deed. That is when they learn to think for themselves, take decisions, learn from their mistakes and grow in confidence. Like a kite that we fly, we shall not let go of the string completely but will allow the kite to soar.

Timing – Every good dance is in sync to the beat being played. Similarly every moment of our life must be in sync with the priorities that we accord. So prioritizing our goals is a critical component of a fulfilling life. We need to learn to pause and listen, we need to know when we have to simply let go and encourage and most of all we need to know when to keep quiet and not interfere.

Movement – Like dance, life is a constant movement with varied pace. Sometimes time flies, other times it is slow and dreary. Yet the movement is what makes the dance wholesome and meaningful. Learn to go with the flow; don’t thwart the ebb. At times life can make us dizzy with the speed with which it takes us along. Other times the pace is woefully boring but allows us time to catch our breath. You cannot pause unless it is a demand of the rhythm. So pay attention to the music, the pace and beat. Adjust your movements to gel with the moment.

Patterns – Like any dance, life follows certain patterns and repetitive movements. Each dance has its own set of patterns that gives it an allurement for the eye. Your life too should adopt a pattern that makes it a treat for those around. Your personality would influence those patterns but that does not mean you cannot make the patterns of your life vibrant, soothing, engaging, encompassing and exciting. There could be awkward traits that you would have to overcome, there could be enormous potential that you would have leverage and there is always abundance of love that you can dish out more. The patterns you form in life emerge from the choices you make every day, every moment and to every life around you.

Grace – The beauty of the dance lies in the grace with which it is performed. The same dance performed on another day could fall short of expectations or could be mesmerizing. Similarly the challenge in the dance of life is to attempt to make each day better than the previous day both for yourself and for those around you. All that you do must be because you care, you enjoy doing it and because you believe you make a difference to everyone by the way you lead your life. Some days could be disappointing, painful and forgetful but most days must be exhilarating, enjoyable and fulfilling. Add a dash of sunshine, joy and self belief every morning and the dance of life will always be movement of grace; a joy to watch, behold and experience.

Try these

  1. Make 15-25 small chits. On each one write a name of a random person who you interact with. It could be a family member, a colleague, a neighbor, the liftman, the house help etc. Put it in a big box and pick 12 chits at random. In order of the name you picked up, you have to ensure your dance (interactions) with that person for each coming month is made more exciting for that person through your words, action, deeds.
  2. List out just one personal goal for yourself for each of the following aspects of your life
  • Personal growth
  • Financial security
  • Professional progress
  • Personal passion
  • Learning a new skill

Just focus on the above goals in the coming year and track your progress each month on each of the above goals you have set for yourself.

The 3 C’s of life

22-3 C's of lifeThere are lot of youngsters ( and I suspect plenty of adults too) who are desperately trying to improve their future but find themselves aimlessly drifting and getting frustrated with every passing day. Almost all of them are intelligent, have a fair degree of clarity of thought and posses the energy and drive to succeed; yet they seem to be confused, helpless and defeated as if trapped in cage. The reality is that they build a cage around themselves by merely focusing on what has not gone right, blaming people and circumstances for their plight, blinding themselves from seeing difficult but possible options and wallowing in self pity. The real wonder of life is the new opportunities that each passing day brings, provided we seek it. The options won’t suddenly pop up but would tantalizing hover around, waiting to bestow the opportunity to those who are keenly looking out for it.

Success is actually a matter of knowing the 3 C’s (like the three R’s you learned in school) and putting that learning into practice. In fact you can put this into practice even as you read this post.

Choices abound- seek it, evaluate it, act on it.  First of all identify what you want. This means you must have some objective, an aim, a definite purpose. In short you must have a goal. Most unhappy and frustrated people remain that way because they have no clue about what they want. Using generic adjectives like happiness, rich, successful, well known, popular etc are not objectives or goals but merely pointers to what your inner urges are. Those urges can be met only when you pursue a tangible goal, upon attaining which, you will fulfill your urge of being rich or famous or popular. People are often seeking a ‘good’ job but cannot describe the attributes of the job that will make it a good job for them. As a result they cannot see the various ‘good’ jobs that exist but pick something that seems good. Take time to think out so that there is clarity in your mind. Ideally list out your thoughts so that your mind is not cluttered and more importantly you have something tangible to mull over. The list will give you both clarity and trigger your mind into seeing alternatives and choices that exist. This will enable you to explore and select the path to attaining your goal.

Chances are you will succeed- work for it, persist, don’t fear failure. Nothing ventured nothing gained is an old maxim. They also say that unless a turtle sticks it’s neck out, it cannot make progress. The message is clear; you have to dare, be bold, move out of your comfort zone and explore beyond, move into unknown territory, experiment, be different, break free. If you know what you want, the way to attain would also be clear. You may never have traversed that path but now you must. There are risks involved, there could be setbacks, you may have to trudge along alone and it could be a tiring, weary journey. Yet, the best part is you are moving, inching closer to what you want, your leaving the past trusting your abilities. At times you would hit a roadblock, you could be discouraged, you may even encounter failure. Persistence is the mantra that will embolden you, rejuvenate you and help you attain your goal.

Changes will happen – make it happen, don’t fight it, be the change. As you make your choice and take a chance you will face numerous changes that you have to cope with. Changes would impact your daily life, your emotional life, your psychological temperament, your relationships, your financial well being and even your status in society. You need to cope with the changes. Don’t let the negative changes dishearten you nor let the positive changes make you heady and arrogant. If there are times when you all your efforts don’t bring about the change you seek, you will have to double your efforts, redirect your efforts, get help from others to enhance your efforts till you force the change or become the change itself. Progress has always been made by people who dreamt of a change and got others to believe in their point of view and together forced the change. By the way, your life too will change dramatically !

So have you written down your goals? At least write down all the things you want to do to make your life better. Dream up more and add to the list of achievements you want to attain. Outline the immediate action you need to take for the most important items on your list. Start working on those action points now. It will help, if you also put a deadline by which you hope to attain each item on your goal list. Don’t make excuses for not preparing the list. Start..

Try these:

  1. Read the last para above and prepare the list and the action to be taken by you.
  2.  List out the following ( at least three )
  • Ways to increase your savings
  • Changes to yourself to become an even more engaging personality
  • Bad habits you will try to eliminate
  • Ways you will improve your relationship with family/ colleagues / business associates
  • Expand your productive working hours
  • Contribute your mite to social/ philanthropic activities.

You have to be odd to be…

26- You have to be oddThe odd and even numbers start with the numbers one and two respectively. In life, we attach a lot of importance to standing first be it in academics, sports, quizzes or in form of competition. Perhaps the only place a person is not keen to be first, is in the roll call list. It may look ironic, that to be first you have to acknowledge that it is an odd number. However, there is a large message though, which suggests that you have to be odd, different, stand out in a crowd, evolve into someone unlike anyone else, if one wants to stand first. The challenge is to mentally be ready to be different, have the self belief that being different is the way to be noticed, that being different does not mean being a deviant and that when one is different, the conformists (who are always in a majority) would try everything in their power to bring you back in line.

Here are a few rules to being on top and standing first:

Give wings to your imagination – All of us have a wild imagination that often pops in the form of dreams, ideas, wishes, hopes and wishful thinking. To give momentum to your imagination think wildly, be creative, don’t curb your instincts and never prejudge your thoughts. Let you mind free to explore, to soar high, to visualize creatively, to be wild and fantasize. Look around and observe the man made wonders and you will see the wonders created by imaginative people. If they had curbed their natural urge, stifled their wild imagination and feared criticism they would never have achieved what they did. Be odd in your thinking and that is the way to be number one.

Dare to be different – A wild imagination will give you ample alternatives to explore. However, picking on one of the numerous brilliant ideas that you have would be a huge challenge. Most times we are caught between choosing from equally attractive and equally challenging alternatives. More importantly you may never find support from those around you, who cannot be as imaginative as you or are constrained by their own understanding and logic. Thus the choice of alternative becomes even more complex for it is yourself belief that has to overcome all rational objections. If you can see the path ahead, no matter how rocky or perilous, you can be sure very few will dare to walk that path and so you have the advantage to be pioneering the way. By being different, you risk being labeled odd but remember fortune favors the brave.

Never fear failure – There is an inherent risk of failure in any new venture. Failure must therefore be viewed as a reality check, that helps keep the venture on track. Fear of failure is perhaps the single biggest reason that separates the achievers from the dreamers. The achievers have factored in the risk of failure and then made decisive progress whereas those who had lofty ideas, gigantic plans and aimed for a risk free venture got waylaid by a syndrome called ‘paralysis by analysis’. Managing failure is also an art. The focus must be on root cause analysis and fixing the problem rather than apportioning blame and squabbling. When confronted with failure there is a thin line between being obstinate and having confidence; the key is to listen, observe, think through and be humble enough to correct the errors. When one fails there will be plenty of criticism, lots of well meaning but often ill directed advice; be rationale in evaluating them. Bear in mind that failure is not falling down but failure to get up.

Act today – Most plans never take off because we wait for that perfect moment. Most times the perfect moment is always delayed because we have never defined what that perfect moment is. In a race the starter gun begins the race. In our quest for glory we wear two hats; that of the starter and that of the participant. More importantly in our mind we do not see the rivals and so we believe we are competing only against ourselves and so we wait to make the perfect start. They say that even a tortoise makes progress only when it sticks it’s neck out; be bold enough to stick your neck out and begin today.

Keep improvising –They say quality has no finishing line. No matter what you have achieved, there is scope for improvement. When you strive to improve further, you remain competitive. You make yourself invaluable and edge ahead of the competition. One trait that always helps become competitive by improvising is by listening and paying attention to feedback. The negative feedback about yourself, the positive feedback about the competition and the wish list that people express, all provide vital inputs for you to reinvent yourself. Imagination and asking questions are the other traits that will provide you inputs to work upon to edge past the competition and get that odd number one spot.

Each day provides you and opportunity to improve upon yourself. Every new thought, act and effort that helps you grow, change and improve means you are better than the day before. You are retaining your number one spot by choosing to be at odds with the previous day and bettering yourself.

Try these:

  • Read the poem If by Rudyard Kipling by clicking on the following link http://tinyurl.com/6xkmplx
  • List out the actions that you have initiated despite not getting support from family and friends, that have helped you achieve something significant. Can you recall actions that you initiated that failed by still helped you improve by learning from that failure?
  • Identify a hero and a heroine from history that you admire. Find out at least 2 decisive decisions / actions/ initiatives that each of them took that was bold, different and path breaking that made them a hero and heroine in your estimation.

Your response to change makes the difference

23- Your Response to change determines makes the differenceIt is well known that change is the only constant in life and that it is imperative to adapt to change. However today we view change from a different perspective, of how it is vital for us to understand and appreciate how we respond to the challenge of change, which is forever inundating us. To begin with we need to be aware that change is a process and our response is a compulsion, a reaction or an initiative. Our response will often determine the outcome of the effect that change has on us; change either imposes itself on us or we accept it with grace or we nurture it affectionately.

When change is a compulsion it indicates that we did not anticipate it or we ignored it or that we were too stubborn to accept it. If one is able to make peace with the reality that change brings about and even reluctantly accept the change it is possible that one can survive the effects of change. The biggest change is being brought about by the technological revolution. The older generation would psyche themselves into believing that they are not capable of adapting to the technological changes and as a result often feel lonely and isolated. Similarly organizations that did not feel the winds of change often got blown away when the technology revolution gathered momentum. In a fast paced world where the pace of change is in geometric proportions, it is only the people who change at least after the change who can survive. It is imposed and is then the compulsion of the times

When change is a reaction it implies that we are attuned to the happenings around and that one is open to understand, appreciate and gracefully accept the change. The numerous initiatives of NGO’s and governmental agencies to health concerns, ecological concerns, natural disasters, child labor, educational imperatives etc are in many ways changes that a more aware society is keen to highlight. Technology be it in the form of harnessing solar and wind energy or waste disposal or harnessing nuclear power are also changes that nudges us to become more aware and encourages us to quickly adapt and adopt the inevitable. People who change with change will succeed because they quickly reacted to the change they noticed and accepted.

When change is an initiative it is a proactive response to a concern, an opportunity or the creation of something absolutely new. Look around and there are ample problems all crying out for solutions. Those who can visualize these concerns as a possible problem to be solved would take the initiative to find solutions that would ultimately lead to a change. Similarly those who can creatively scan the environment to add value by shaking up the status quo are leveraging the opportunities around. The numerous apps that are mushrooming are a clear sign of how change is becoming an initiative that unlocks value for those who respond proactively. Then there are those who disrupt the existing order with revolutionary ideas and creations. The ATM machines, the credit card revolution, the online payment gateways have turned banking and finance on its head. Similarly the concepts of laser surgery, pain management drugs, robotic manufacturing etc. are initiatives that have redefined the existing world order. Notice that all these people cause the change bringing about a revolution; the Windows, Google, Facebook , Whatsapp are leading the world because they took the initiative to change.

Try these:

  1. Look around and identify at least 5 possible areas of improvement in the world around you. It is not necessary that you have the skill or competence to proactively make those changes but idea generation itself is a proactive initiative.
  2. Scan the news papers and websites to identify opportunities for you to take some initiative and give expression to your ideas/ creativity. E.g. Currently there is a short story writing opportunity for aspiring writers being run by a leading newspaper. Similarly there is one leading airline seeking ideas to incorporate in their app.
  3. Do you have any fresh / new ideas to address the following concerns
  • Make citizens avoid the use of plastic bags
  • Encourage citizens to segregate waste into wet and dry waste
  • Ensure that electricity is not wasted because street lights are not switched off in the day time or water is not wasted because a public tap is leaking or a pipeline has burst.
  • Make citizens aware of the status of public interest projects like road widening, building over overbridges, setting up of garbage / sewage disposal plants etc.

Broken crayons can still color

Broken crayonsEver thought about your favorite color? So is it blue or red or black or green or ??? Do you remember the times when as a kid, you scrawled on the walls with broken crayons you found? You may not have great artistic talent but when you get some crayon pieces, the itch to scribble, dabble with them and just experiment with the colors would be hard to resist. You don’t need a fresh set of crayons to unleash your talents; all you need is a piece of crayon and your imagination will do the rest.

Have you ever visualized yourself as a multi colored crayon? Pause and look at what you are wearing. Remember what you wore yesterday or the day before or for the last party you went too? I am sure you wore different attires, colors and styles depending on the occasion, your mood and the timing. Now can you visualize yourself as a live multi colored crayon? Frankly each of us has the potential to color the world around us in different hues and also make our life colorful too. At times especially when you are happy and energized, you feel like a new big crayon but when disheartened and feeling low you would see yourself as a miniscule piece of crayon. When happy and excited you certainly would be able to add vibrant colors and positive energy to the world around you but when the going is tough, you see yourself as a broken useless piece of crayon that can only color something dreary and faded; yet the fact is that even the tiniest piece of crayon still retains the same vibrant color. All you need to do is picture vividly and color freely to get your masterpiece ready.

Here are tips on making those broken crayons add vibrant colors:

Take stock of what you have – Even when you are at the lowest point in your life, don’t forget that you are alive and that you can turn your life around. However, to do that make a realistic assessment of the colors left with you and begin painting only what the colors available with you can be made best use off. E.g. If unfortunately you have got the pink slip don’t imagine your life to suddenly turn into just one color black. You must take stock of your strengths and limitations and work around that. Do not become too pricey when opportunities present themselves nor accept any opening out of desperation.

Plan with a purpose – When you begin coloring there must be a schema in mind, a blueprint in your imagination and a definite visual of the final outcome. Preparing the schema takes time, requires a lot of effort, it would initially appear confusing and complicated but it is the strong foundation on which a firm structure can be built. E.g. When you seek new job opportunities you don’t quit first and search for a job later. In fact you would ask yourself the reasons for the change you plan, the kind of job profile that you are aiming for, the kind of compensation you would want and then you would confine your search to shortlist those job options that fit into your plans.

Strip of the paper covering on the crayons – Most crayons come with a paper covering that you peel off as and when you have utilized the exposed part of the crayon. Obviously if you don’t peel of the paper cover, the crayon wouldn’t do the job it is meant for. You too would have to occasionally do a reality check about yourself; strip of your ego, don’t keep glossing over your past achievements, put aside the temporary failures or setbacks you may have encountered, asses your strengths and weaknesses and prioritize your plans.

Substitute colors by being imaginative – When you run short of specific shades you can attempt to substitute other colors, even try to mix the colors to get the preferred shade, modify the drawing or style of coloring etc. When life refuses to allow you the luxury of sticking to the carefully laid out plans all you can do is adapt. Adapting to circumstance could involve making sacrifices, making adjustments to the original plans, occasionally it could mean abandoning something very close to your heart. Very often it involves making risky choices, sometimes having to take that leap of faith or having to give into your gut instincts. . E.g Have you taken on a new job responsibility or attempted something different during the course of the year?

Keep coloring Yes every crayon can color but one has to take that crayon and start coloring with it. Keeping crayons in the original box packing for spending the crayons would be a sheer waste of some excellent resource. In the same way you have to explore the various dimensions of your abilities and talents. You may make new discoveries about your potential. You could also make some painful realizations about your limitations. When you begin to do something, the results could vary but there is certainty that you would evidence a picture that emerges from your efforts E.g. when was the last time somebody expressed surprise at something you did? If you haven’t been applauded or criticized it means you have stagnated and have become placid, boring and staid.

Try this

  • Gentlemen who never enter the kitchen should try to visit a cookery blog and attempt to surprise your family with a new dish. Ladies who have never every attempted tinkering with any mechanical stuff can attempt to at least open the car bonnet and identify various parts of the car and engine under the bonnet.
  • Buy a 500 or 1000 piece puzzle from the store. Make the puzzle and get it framed and hang it in a place where you can see it often and remind yourself that you did something different and you succeeded because you tried.

Uncertainty has one certainty

19- 23 July 15-Uncertainty has one certainty - possibiltiesLike change, that is a constant in our life, uncertainty is niggle that will never go. Each moment of our life, we are constantly processing fresh inputs and each input brings with it fresh perspectives for us to mull on. The human mind is largely programmed to preserve, protect and pre-empt threats and dangers and hence, every input we get is filtered through the lens of self preservation. As a result, uncertainty brings with it a sense of dread, fear and worries, which threaten to overshadow the one certainty that it offers – infinite possibilities. Once we accept that uncertainty will be a lifelong companion, then it is possible for us to see it as a shadow, that seems to lurk but is never threatening. That is when we learn to face the sun, put the shadow behind us and see the overpowering light of possibilities ahead of us.

Here are some ways of visualizing possibilities that can be leveraged to make life more interesting, happy and fulfilling.

Think positive – Since self preservation is a natural instinct in us, we have developed our senses to anticipate trouble as being equal to uncertainty ahead. As a result we always scan the future for trouble, difficulties, negativities and danger. While it is essential that we plan for any future eventualities, that should not be the fulcrum around which our life should revolve. Look ahead with anticipation, move ahead with confidence; don’t let a few hurdles stop you from proceeding ahead. The trick is to set your goals high and to visualize yourself setting out on an adventure towards that goal with zeal, enthusiasm and faith. Remember ‘ A ship is safe in the harbor, but that is not what it is built for’.

Seek opportunities – Most people balk at the thought of having to cross imaginary chasms. They simply avoid beginning the journey. On the other hand those who have attained success have always had the foresight and vision to seek opportunities in the midst of difficulties. The great scientist of the world especially those who have found cures for various ailments and diseases have not let their fear of the disease stop them from seeing an opportunity to find a cure for the same. There is risk, there is possibility of failure but there is also the sense of achievement, the joy of success and their vision of contributing for the larger good. Remember – A pessimist sees a difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees an opportunity in every difficulty’

Accept what can’t be changed – Every individual will definitely come across a situation that suddenly cascades into an avalanche of uncertainties. The death of a parent/ loved one, a sudden job loss, an unexpected health related issue etc. immediate trigger alarm, creates panic and disturbs our equilibrium. The situation is not of our making, yet it cannot be wished away of ignored. While the immediate shock is natural, it is essential that we come to grips with reality and begin to accept the situation. With a positive outlook, one can rationally seek out the positives that exist despite the not too pleasant situation you find yourself in. This will allow us to think with a calm mind, pick up our life once again and pursue our goals with purpose, passion and positivity. Remember – If you don’t like something change it; if you can’t change it, change the way you think about it. -Mary Engelbreit

Change things by being proactive – Be the change you want to see, is a common enough refrain. Yes you have to take that bold step to begin the change that you want in your life. Change that overcomes you by accident, would often overwhelm you but change that you set in motion, is largely controlled by you and you can often steer it to direction you want to go. Begin by making small changes in your own life. Self discipline is good way to begin. Progress from thereon, to taking the lead to change things that you strongly feel about. You are taking charge of the uncertainty ahead to steer it to a certainty that you have envisioned. Remember – “You’re braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” A.A. Milne

Try these:

  1. Rearrange your home and office space. It would be a proactive beginning and would also allow you to feel the power that you posses to influence the world around you when you take some proactive steps.
  2. Arrange these in the order that applies to you; with the most problematic one listed first and going down the order. Outline steps to tackle these so that you are leveraging possibilities to eliminate / minimize your problems
  • Lack of self discipline
  • Indecision
  • Poor time management
  • Impulsive reactions
  • Quick temper
  • Procrastination
  • Pessimistic outlook

Let the world change you for the better

22-11 Nov 14- You must break free andIn the euphoria of youthful adolescence we aspire to be role models to others, hope to make a difference to the world around us and expect to leave our mark on the world. Over time with the experience we gain, the maturity one attains and the realization that we have limited control over the happenings and people around us, we make a tactical retreat from our lofty ideals. Yet, off and on we still try to impose our ideas, attempt to brow beat others to our point of view and fondly hope that we are making a substantial contribution in changing the world around us. In this process we do gain some small victories occasionally but find ourselves caught up in the tide of the world around us and struggling to stay afloat.

On the other hand if we tweak our thoughts, change our attitude and modify our behavior so as to be more open to new thoughts, embrace new technologies and make peace with differing ideas and ideologies we would find ourselves more at peace, feel the pleasure of doing something different and enjoy the euphoria that comes from embracing change. Suddenly you will realize that slowly but steadily the world has helped you change and evolve into a much better person, a more competent individual and a very adaptable member of society. You have changed without compromising on your values, ethics and principles.

Here are some pointers to get the best out of the world around you

Have an open mind – This holds the key to learning from every situation, experience and failure. An open mind allows us the freedom to dare, risk and remain optimistic. Our crazy ideas make sense only when an open mind allows us the space to stretch our imagination and visualize the fructification of the idea into a tangible outcome. In the same way it allows one to discover the complications, the false assumptions, the unplanned deviations and the unexpected roadblocks without letting us lose our self belief. At the same time it allows us to inject a healthy dose of optimism, drives us passionately and helps us retain our zeal no matter what the obstacles.

Move out of your comfort zone – While all of us have dreams and some even indulge in day dreams, translating those dreams into action requires daring, courage and risk taking. This necessitates that one bite the bullet and take the risks, attempt something different and even have the courage to do what others least expect you to do. A person’s mettle is tested only when he/she is taking on new challenges, exploring uncharted territory and/ or confronting fears. This is also the time when one often discovers new personal strengths, abilities and qualities. This could also pave the way to achieving new milestones and exponential success.

Be prepared for surprises and shocks – If one were to really absorb and benefit from the influences of the world around us, we must be prepared to first embrace the surprises that come our way. Too many times we do not relish our success but worry that the success was an accident and may not repeat itself. Try new things, experience new outcomes. It is also essential to remember that when we try something different there could be some rude shocks too. These shocks would in all probability be temporary glitches or short term setbacks but that should not be construed to be a personal affront or colossal blunder.

Make every day count – Even as you read this, you are making judgments about the veracity of what you have read so far. If you largely agree with the points shared here you would need to quickly have a plan of action to put the learning to work. On the other hand if you are not in agreement with most of what you have read so far, then you must prepare to comment and share your views here. Either way, it is the first step to taking some concrete and decisive action. It is only when one takes decisive action then you make the day count.

The urge to make everyday count is a great motivator to have an open mind, accept the new and apply it, to become an even better person.

Try this:

  1. Watch a regional / foreign language movie (the language should be one that you do not understand). If the movie has English subtitles it is perfectly ok.
  2. Every week plan to play a new game that you have never tried before. Some suggestions are as under
  • A new card game
  • A different board game
  • An outdoor game like croquet/ baseball
  • Try your hand at archery / shooting / darts

Which of the following activities would you never dare attempt? Rank it in order of difficulty. Now try to attempt the least frightening activity within the next 2 months. Then keep attempting the others.

  • Scuba Diving
  • Bungee Jumping
  • Participating in a TV quiz / talent show
  • Being the masters of ceremonies at a function
  • Holding a non poisonous snake for 10 minutes
  • Being a Santa Claus at a Children’s Christmas party

Pick yourself up and carry on

12- 31July 14 Pick yourself upWallowing in self pity is a common ailment suffered by many. We rue the missed opportunities, regret the poor decisions we took, find fault with others who we feel have betrayed or let us down and / or simply curse our fate. While some or most of our reasons for our inability to realise our full potential may have some merit, the bitter truth is that we have to accept the reality that we haven’t optimized our potential and focus on finding ways to move ahead in life. This is best done by letting bygones be bygones and appreciating the riches we still posses and using that more productively.

To do this we need to systematically work on the following 4 aspects

Leave the past behind – Longfellow, the poet, said it beautifully in his poem ‘ The Psalm of Life’ ‘ Let the dead past bury its dead’ While we do tend to lapse into brooding about the days gone by, it is essential that we do not live in the past world. The past cannot be changed nor rewritten. However we can learn from the past experiences, mistakes and follies that we committed. However it is essential that we use the past as only a reference point to be alert and avoid the mistakes we made. It should never be used as crutch to lean on to justify the missed opportunities or rue the chances we did not take or lament about our lack of daring when we could have crossed the chasm in one giant leap.

Utilize the present – Making a clean break with the past is tough but tougher still is utilizing the fresh opportunities that come our way everyday. Many opportunities come disguised as hard work, some come in the form of risks to be taken while most come in the guise of boring, repetitive and mundane work. The challenge then is to be conscientious, bold, efficient and proactive. It is not enough to do a task but one must do it with a smile, bring verve and panache to it and most of all ensure that we can add some more value to our efforts. The difference you create in the task you do will be the difference that will be noticed and rewarded.

Experiment with change – We are conditioned to be logical, methodical and go by the book in most things we do. What distinguishes the winner from the loser is the winners ability to confront problems, failures, disappointments, discouragement and bouts of self doubt with innovative techniques, experimentation and leaving one’s unique imprint behind. None of this is fail safe for there is very real risk of things getting botched up, but the rewards of success far outweigh the risks of failure. Every new idea that succeeds is a tribute to the grit, determination and confidence of those who dared to think differently, dream big and create something unique.

Redesign your future – Behind every success there will invariably be an undercurrent of mistakes, failures and disappointments. However, those who succeed planned to succeed by outlining their future goals, visualizing the path to those goals and as Robert Frost put in verse traveling ‘ miles to go before I sleep’. Designing the future is not limited to entrepreneurs but is the prerogative of every human being. The trick in redesigning the future lies in making a realistic assessment of one’s own self, figuring out one’s strengths, being aware of one’s weakness and using this paradigm as a base telescope the mind to figure out areas of our passion/ interest and exploring the innumerable opportunities that exist in this canvas before us.

So have you finished lamenting? There is no time like the present moment to change your attitude, your beliefs, your goals and yourself.

Try this:

Do something outlandish – here are some suggestions to choose from but you can come up with your own dares for yourself

  • Spend a day at a prison interacting with prisoners
  • Attend a religious service of a different faith
  • Make a kite and get a neighboring kid to help you too
  • Watch a regional language movie (of a language you don’t understand and which has no subtitles)

If you had to give a donation of a substantial sum to a cause what cause would you donate it to? Instead of donating money to the cause can you spend 1 hour a week for 6 months working on that cause?

The secret to evolve and transform yourself

6-28 May 14-See me evolveEach of us can see the physical changes that each of us goes through but the subtle changes and evolution that we go through mentally, psychologically, behaviorally elude us. While we gather our academic credentials that is no conclusive evidence of our intellect, just as our acceptability by those around us is not proof of our attitude and temperament. What is indisputable is the fact that if we introspect, we will be able to recognize the changes in us. The changes could be the result of new learning, experience, conscious decisions or thrust upon us by unavoidable circumstances. Interestingly the changes we notice now are still within our grasp and we can with determination and effort change them to a desirable state. E.g. if you are overweight a good diet and exercise regime can often yield positive result or if you are frequently criticized for being late, with a stronger will and determination you can become punctual.

With one fact established that one can change, evolve and transform to being an even better person than what we are, the challenge before us is to find the right way to go about it. Here are a few techniques to attain this goal.

Appreciate the person that you have evolved into. Look back at your childhood, school days and the carefree youth you were/ are. Reflect on the various dreams, career options, plans that you contemplated. Examine them from the standpoint of where you are today and what you have achieved and don’t hesitate to also brood on the chances you missed, the failures you encountered, the discouragements you faced. Be aware of the achievements you have attained, the odds you have conquered and the encouragement and support you received from various quarters. Notice that you are thinking only about yourself, never comparing yourself with anyone else; for sure you are proud of whatever you are at this moment.

Be aware of your strengths and weakness. No one is perfect and you are no exception. Be conscious of the numerous strengths you posses no matter how insignificant it may seem. Your ability to march to a different drummer or act very differently from others may have evoked sharp criticism from others but that is your strength; value it.

Telescope your imagination to visualize the ideal you. If you noticed in the first two steps your focus was on identifying, appreciating and acknowledging your own growth, success and potential that you have leveraged. If a large part of that has happened without a conscious decision from your side, with adequate effort but not necessarily all your effort, imagine how much more you can achieve if you are focused, planned and eager to achieve your dreams. So now it is time for you to give free reign to your imagination, plan to work on your passions, be daring to walk on unexplored paths, believe in yourself. Remember you are limited only by your imagination; if you can dream it you can achieve it.

Outline your goals and ambitions. If you have consciously and deliberately identified various opportunities that you hope to exploit, it won’t happen unless you specify them as goals to achieve and ambitions to fulfill. This is a crucial step for it requires not just imagination but also logical thinking, pragmatic decision making and courage of conviction. It is chalking out the route map to attaining your goals that will pose problems, create doubts, shake your confidence and challenge your daring. However if you can visualize success and are prepared to strive hard and beat the odds, the only thing stopping you will be YOU.

Resolve to change, begin the change and evolve into the change you seek. Now that you are ready to explore your potential, harness your abilities and go for broke, make a firm resolution not to give up unless you have given yourself a fair chance and ample time. Once your psyche has been tuned to perfection, begin as planned and continue with faith. Results will take time, but pay attention to the small changes that will motivate you, listen to the voice of reason that may whisper to you at times so that you can make adjustments but beware of the loud roar of disillusionment and disenchantment that can derail your plans. Discernment is essential for you to ensure you act with reason. Watch yourself evolve into the person you are capable of being!

Try this

List one goal each for the following aspects of your life

  • Physical fitness
  • Financial stability
  • Social awareness
  • Family bonding
  • Personal growth

Pick out one activity that you would like to be proficient in that your spouse or family member dislikes but is forced to do. Eg. Washing dishes / cooking / record keeping etc. Now outline a plan to ensure you can play an effective supporting role in discharging the same duties so as to help / assit the other person.

Outline 3 activities that will help you bond better with your family especially teenagers in the house. If you are a teen, list out 3 activities that will enliven your presence in the house and pleasantly surprise those at home. Eg. If you are sloppy in arranging your room perhaps you can resolve to be more tidy and organized

3 simple rules for life

At the outset let me thank each one of my readers and blog followers for having supported this blog and crossing 1,00,000 views. A special word of thanks to the 661 followers of the blog. For those who do not know, I started this blog on 1st Jan 2010 and kept a target of writing one post a day. I did manage around 340 posts in 2010, but cut down drastically thereafter. I am just delighted that so many of you send in your feedback or write in to me with their comments. Thank you friends!

Obviously, I was keen to mark this historic moment with something special but was not getting a lucky break or a fabulous idea. However a couple of days back a close friend sent me an email containing quotes in the form of posters and immediately I knew that this was the answer to my prayers. So starting today for the next 40 odd posts I would be using the contents of these posters as the central theme. I would also try to be more brief as regards the post contents. This is in deference to the wishes of a handful of good friends whose feedback I value. Your feedback would be most appreciated.

Rule 1. – If you do not GO after what you want, you’ll never have it.

  1. To get what you want you must know what you want.
  2. Write down your passions, whittle it down to your goals.
  3. Ensure you have a time frame to achieve the goals.
  4. Have a detailed action plan with indicators to ensure that your are on track.
  5. If you have read so far, start implementing what you have read. GO !!

Rule 2. If you do not ASK the answer will always be NO

  1. Following Rule 1 and implementing is a good beginning to follow Rule 2.
  2. Remember you cannot do it all on your own- so might as well ask others to help out
  3. While you might occasionally get NO as an answer, to get that YES you must ask.

Rule 3. If you do not step forward you will always be in the same place.

  1. Begin by having a firm point of view on issues.
  2. Try and express yourself so that you are heard and noticed.
  3. As you progress be more decisive and stand up to be counted.

 Try this:

  • Have you tried a different cuisine?
  • Ever made friends with a foreigner ?
  • Ever tried fund raising for a worthy cause by seeking out sponsors?
  • Visit an orphanages/ home for the aged/ prison / mental hospital/ hospice
