Curiosity is a special talent

A common lament of most people is that they cannot identify any single ability/ talent that they posses. They blame this limitation for their lack of ambition, focus, drive and inability to make something better of their life. It is equally true that the overwhelming majority of us are not blessed with some extraordinary ability/ talent. Yet just look around and you will find innumerable talented people never making use of their potential and surprisingly a host of very ordinary people make a whooping success of their life. So what explains this dichotomy? It just so happens that those who seemingly possessed nothing possessed a great gift of curiosity. The others neither explored their talents nor were they curious as to how they could use their talents to make something better of themselves. So it is important to understand how someone who is passionately curious can channelize that talent and convert it into a resounding success.

The answer lies in the approach one takes to curiosity and is best explained by two contrasting English proverbs on curiosity.

Curiosity killed the cat. – This implies that one must not be too curious or it could lead to trouble.

Curiosity is the wick in the candle of learning – This encourages one to explore and find out for there is a world out there that is still to be discovered.

Most people keep their curiosity tucked away for fear that it could open up a Pandora’s box. They don’t dare to open up, find out or move out of their comfort zone. They believe that the status quo is what they are destined for and so they remain there; forever. However, it is those who pursue the later approach are the ones who experiment, fail, succeed, discover, study, work on alternatives, keep trying and finally succeed. It is never a lateral progression but a circuitous complex and occasionally crazy way around. What keeps these people going is their insatiable urge to discover, is their self belief and their singular focus on succeeding in their quest.

Urge to discover/find out / explore / try– How many of you have cut an apple other than lengthwise? Cut it horizontally and look at the two halves carefully. You would see a star like pattern. Is this discovery of any use? Nah. However it now helps you see things you never imagined before. You will find out only if you try something different. The apple slicer for example was a result of someone getting very irritated with slicing the apple only to have to the seeds become an irritant and the slices looking uneven.  Now list out all your irritants and think about alternatives to overcome your irritants. You don’t have to be a wizard of scientist to explore and find out ways and means to make your life better.

Self belief – Perhaps you have already dismissed the earlier point as silly/ not for me / how does it help me. Unless you believe that you have the intelligence, the determination and the power to make a difference you will never take on anything challenging. If you learned cycling, swimming or driving you would have never succeeded in the first go. Yet because you believed that you could master it you continued despite failing and acquired the skill. It is the same self belief that you can make things happen, you can change things around for yourself, you can succeed that will enable you to experiment, explore and extract the best of everything around you.

Having focus – This might sound like an oxymoron in the context of curiosity because curiosity is all about exploring without inhibitions. The focus must be on two aspects. One focus on experimenting; this means be unrestrained in diverse areas, be open to varied possibilities and keep challenging the status quo.  The second aspect of focus is in narrowing your attention to the finer details of what implicitly fascinates you in your quest and discovery. If Thomas Edison experimented with a thousand things before he came up with the filament for the light bulb it simply shows the focus he brought into what was his self belief. At the same time the number of patents he holds shows the focus he brought to bear on exploring diverse aspects that triggered his scientific curiosity.

Try these:

  1. Each of you reading it must be exposed to various social media inputs be it wattsapp / facebook/ instagram / twitter etc. Can you recollect the 5 forwards that you received that got you mesmerized because it was so unique/ different / wow in your opinion.
  2. Make a list of personal/ social irritants that constantly annoy you. Can you list out 3 -10 possible solutions for each of those irritants. How about working on making one of them a workable proposition?
  3. In what creative ways would you spend a gift of Rs.1,000?

Five life skills to adopt

23- 26 Jun17- Mantra to live byIn a fast paced world speed is key. Unfortunately, this has led to a situation where people have outpaced themselves and as a result the paradise that we can enjoy on earth, if we simply slow down, seems like an utopian idea. It is race with no end in sight and when we stop occasionally to ask ourselves where we are headed, we have no idea why we are where we are. Our life span won’t increase if we speed up, our dreams will still have bliss if one slows down but most of all we would enjoy and value our life we learn to live, rather than just exist, survive and decay.

To make sure that we enjoy the life we are blessed with, slow down and then follow the mantra below:

Don’t just look, #observe# – Look around and you see varied colors around. You see various facial expressions and body language of people around. You may notice the buzz and zip or an eerie silence depending on where you are. If you look carefully you may perhaps observe some finer aspects that would have skipped your attention; perhaps you will then notice that in a pack of cards there is one king with only one eye. Look carefully and perhaps you will observe the subtle differences in the different Jacks and Queens. Have you ever noticed the various silhouettes that you can contort using the shadow created when light is focused on an object like your hand/ fingers. Take various currency notes and observe some small varied geometrical shapes printed on the currency notes of different values. Along the highway of life you need to take time out to smell the flowers; but first you have to notice those flowers. Observe the blessings you have been showered with; family, friends, neighbors, colleagues, financial stability, good health and the list goes on.

Don’t just swallow, taste – Ever felt your mouth watering when you smelt the aroma of food. Perhaps a similar feeling engulfed you when you see the pictures of various dishes displayed in advertisements and culinary magazines/ blogs. When it comes to part taking of the food, often we are quick to notice what is wrong, but rarely do we appreciate what is wonderful about the meal.  At home, one major distraction when eating is the lure of TV and mobile phones which ensure we eat mechanically; eating fast, chewing less and swallowing it rather than relishing the taste and appreciating the effort that went into the mealAn essential ingredient of a great meal is intangible; it is a dash of love put in by the one preparing it. Next time, taste every morsel and experience the dash of love on your taste buds.

Don’t just sleep, dream Surely you can’t force yourself to dream. It is possible though to go to bed with some good thoughts, passionate ideas and blissful reflections. These will automatically turn into blissful sleep and wonderful dreams. There is also a different angle to the dimension of dreams. The biggest dreams are those that won’t let your sleep. Ask the wannabe next gen entrepreneurs. All their waking hours are spent on visualizing vividly and working diligently on their dreams. So what is keeping you awake at night; a nightmare or a dream? You can choose; just choose well.

Don’t just think, feel This reflects the difference between sympathy and empathy. It is easy to see the pain and anguish of another who is struggling to stay afloat in the tempest of life. It takes courage, daring and empathy to reach out and risk your sanity and life to stand by the one in pain. Doling out alms, making encouraging proclamations and paying lip sympathy is passé. Feeling for another enough, means to walk in his / her shoes and experience their pain. This requires a person to translate their understanding of the others pain into personal action whereby you stand alongside and share the burden of the other. An apt illustration is the story told of a small five year old girl who lost her best playmate and neighbor in an accident. A couple of days later, this young girl went to her neighbor’s house and came back after a while. On being asked by her mother, what she did in the neighbor’s house, she replied that her friend’s mother was weeping copiously and that she sat on her friend’s mother’s lap and joined her in weeping copiously.

Don’t just exist, live – Am I living everyday with regret, complains suffering and pain in my heart? This would indicate that I am going through life merely because life has not yet abandoned me. If life hasn’t abandoned you why are you abandoning life? As long as you breathe, make every breath a sign of joy, happiness, bliss and ecstasy. It is your life; your thoughts; your feelings and your future. How about looking at life in wonderment of being alive; in the joy of the numerous blessings you are bestowed with; in contributing to the world around you the value of your worth be it through smiles, encouragement, empathy and liveliness. Existence is for the ventilator to provide; life is for you to live!

The masks we wear

10- The mask we wearTruth be told; each of us wears a mask to suit the occasion. We pretend to be happy when we are sad; try to obviate all traces of our jealousy, envy, greed; pretend to like those who we hate but cannot avoid. Many a time we sheepishly smile to disguise our embarrassments and irritation. While we, as individuals use a pseudo mask that attempts to project what we really are not, the clown merely amplifies it with a physical mask, to ensure all those who see it, are in sync with the image being projected.

There is a pattern in facets of ourself that we hide, behind the masks which we put on. The reality is that  ‘Each individual is actual 3 persons. The person I think I am; the person you think I am and the real me.’

The person I think I am : Each of us has an unique identity and that is not merely because of lineage but is also the outcome of how we are shaped by the family, the social settings around us and our own individuality. So siblings could still have widely differing interests, skills, attitudes, display different traits and mannerisms. What is important is how the individual visualizes himself/ herself. Some are pragmatic; some carry the baggage of their own limitations, anxieties, experiences and thinking. There are some who are over confident while others are modest to a fault.  Some are risk takers, others cautious, some reckless and most of us simply flow with the tide. There could be varied aspects of my own self that are probably noticed by others but I remain blind to it.  There could be areas of improvement that I need to focus on or talents and strengths that I can leverage. Listening to others holds the key to understand the person I really am.

The person you think I am : Who I perceive myself to be is what I largely tend to display; notwithstanding the fact that occasionally we attempt to sugar coat ourselves subtly to gain acceptance and occasionally we project a tough principled disposition so that we are seen as fair, upright and no nonsensical. However, there would always be some skeletons in our cupboard that we go to great lengths to hide. It could be some misdemeanors that we do not want others to know, we obfuscate inconvenient truths so that we are perceived more favorably and many a time we tend to display our deftness in ‘running with the hare and hunting with the hounds’ just to ensure that all our interests are projected. The person you think I am may be a far cry from the real me. Yet my style, mannerisms, behavior and attitude are tuned to make others think about me the way I subtly project myself. Phrases like ‘ still waters run deep’ or ‘Janus faced’  are testimony to the reality that ‘the person you think I am ‘ may be quite different in reality. Opening up with relevant facts will ensure that others get to understand me better.

The real me : The real me is largely hidden from others. Even I would known only myself better only when put to the test.  Occasionally some hidden aspects of me are known to very close family and friends. My insecurities, my fears, my hopes, my aspirations, my anxieties, my deepest thoughts, my confidence, my exuberance, my feelings of love, hate, revenge etc are part of me that very few know about. There are aspects of me that even I have yet to discover like my true potential, my natural aptitude, my yet to be discovered talents, my weakness, my mannerisms, my body language etc. The real me may crave for attention, may seek to be understood, may yearn for acceptance or may search for companionship. The real me could be fearful but when put to the test dare to confront his fears; she may be docile by nature but her wrath could be devastating. The real me strives to maintain equilibrium amongst the chaos of life or it could crumble like a dried leaf when trampled upon.  The real me lurks within. The real me is often searching to discover myself. The quest for individuality is what makes me uniquely ME.

  1. Read up on or attend a session on the Johari Window concept.
  2. List out the following
  • Two criticisms about the person you admire the most
  • Two points of appreciation about a person you detest.
  • Two secrets you would find it hard to share in a public forum.(just a brief one line statement would do)
  • Two of the naughtiest things you did
  • Two actions that you took that you are really proud of
  • Your biggest fear
  • Your greatest strength

Focus on what you see

03-first-3-wordsOne of the problems many of us have is our inability to really identify something positive to focus upon. This is partly because our minds tend to stray towards what troubles us, our problems real and imagined and varied anxieties that we have made ‘much ado about nothing’. The problem becomes more acute at the start of the year for most of our plans/ resolutions tend to center around unfinished business, challenges to be met and overcoming our limitations. The grid above, however, has ample positives that stare at us and it would help if we focus on the first 3-5 positive words noticed and for the rest of the year align our goals to meet the goals those words beckon.

Honestly I would have loved to list out some of the words above, but then it would take away the fun for you.  Instead, my friends, I am using my power of identification to share my experience of using my time to focus on some goals that have helped me gain friends, popularity and happiness. While money is important, it is the fun of influencing lives that really drives me. The beauty of this is that, I can with all honesty confess, that I have a large circle of young friends and interacting with them makes me feel young at heart. By the way, you also need to use your time not just for yourself but also for others. Keeping busy would also ensure good health in mind and body. If you look carefully there is something positive in every line except for one word. It is not for me to identify it but yes if you have the lust for life, even that word would be positive although most times we use it in a negative context.

Have fun decoding the above and more importantly use those words to make this year a wonderful and productive year for you and all those whose lives you influence.

The child in us

20-The child in you

As we grow up there is a tendency to think more rationally, behave more maturely and respond more circumspectly. The fact is that with age comes responsibility, pragmaticism and the need for socially acceptable interaction. However, in the process we often end being artificial, contrived and awkward for we have lost our natural grace, spontaneity and exuberance. We curb our enthusiasm, react with restrain and seek to fit in. The adult in us desperately tries to hide the child in us, fetters us with chains of social norms and nearly suffocates us as we behave artificially to meet social norms. Apparently life is fun but it is a put on, we project it as fulfilling whilst in reality it is suffocating and beneath the surface we crave to express ourselves unfettered, carefree and joyously.

Ask yourself when are you most happy. The weekends for sure especially when there is a policy to drop the veneer of power dressing. Picnics and outings come a close second for there are no shackles of do’s and dont’s. Informal social gatherings, where you are at  liberty to be your own person. Holidays, when you fully control your life and do pretty much as you please. When you are enjoying a social event be it a musical program, a theater event or a party with friends. Don’t forget the treks, the boys/ girls day out and the ever favorite class mates meets. Pause and ask yourself what makes these events special moments for me. The answer is obvious, you drop your mask of being someone you really are not and become the real you.

The challenge is to seamlessly integrate that child like enthusiasm, spontaneity and exuberance into daily life and balance it with the social norms and pressures imposed on you as a professional, an executive and an adult. It may look a tad difficult but in reality it is the child in us that we often curb that allows us to retain our sanity, allow us to cope with stress and most of all make life fun. We discuss the latest headlines with colleagues giving it our own touch of interpretation, we argue and differ with others, we plan a meal out with colleagues spontaneously and we get all agog when we talk about something passionately. We can do more; we can personalize our workstation to reflect our individuality, we can surprise others with a gift or a treat most unexpectedly, genuinely appreciate something about another person, personalize a sharing with individuals (example you know a person is an avid gardener and you come across an excellent article/ book / clipping on gardening and you make it a point to share that with the individual concerned).

One danger though, of bringing out the child in us, is our over enthusiasm that results us in misusing social media and irritating others. Mindlessly posting, forwarding and liking just to garner attention to ourselves, simply because of the ease of doing it, is a very real issue for then we are childish not childlike. There is definitely a need to balance our adult like maturity with our child like enthusiasm. Life out there is fun because the adult in us takes care of our future needs and the child in us allows us to experience the wonders around us that makes life colorful, magical and enjoyable.

Try these:

Revisit old photo albums and make a collage of the pictures that bring out the special moments from your life. Share it with family and friends at a special occasion like a milestone birthday or anniversary.

A week or two prior to your birthday, review and list out all the fun times, high points, special moments, awkward moments and people who made the year gone by special for you. If inclined to, share them with your friends and family.

Success starts with resourcefulness

11- Being resourceful is the keyWhen confronted with a challenge, a problem, a dilemma, a threat, an obstacle or danger, chances are that we would furiously think of ways to mitigate the issue. This is normal human reaction for that is how we are psychologically conditioned to act.  The issue is actually what we do next. Many of us give up daring to execute our plans for fear of failure. Some would simply give up even trying to identify a solution rationalizing that the circumstance confronting us is far beyond our own ability to cope up with. There would be others who make half hearted attempts to at least postpone the inevitable, in the fond hope of the matter resolving itself over time. The circumstances confronting you are not your enemy. Being afraid to think and act is the real enemy.

Being resourceful is all about thinking quick and acting purposefully. In fact thinking quick is often a natural reaction. However, we tend to keep prejudging our thoughts, ideas, alternatives and opportunities thereby largely neutralizing the power of those immediate thoughts. Acting purposefully is a bigger challenge for we normally tend to react to circumstances rather than act with a clear plan in mind. So is resourcefulness just a matter of generating alternative solutions? Ideating and creativity are just one tool for being resourceful albeit a critical and important tool. Resourcefulness goes far beyond merely thinking up alternatives. It is setting up yourself to triumph over circumstances.

Here are some pointers to being resourceful and using them to overcome the obstacles that confront you.

Believe in yourself – The first thought that often comes to mind when confronted with a challenge is oh no. This is quickly followed by thoughts that revolve around Why me? Can I? This is terrible. I can’t cope with this. It is unfair. It is important to remember that every individual does face challenges at various times in varied degrees and the challenges cover a wide spectrum. One either copes with the challenge or gets overcome by the challenge. The first step to coping with a problem is to believe that you have the mental, physical and emotional strength to find a solution. Unless you believe in yourself you would not seek to find a solution.

Think/ ideate / be creative / visualize– Thinking holds the key to generating solutions. It could be logical or rational thinking, it could be creative thinking, it could be idea generation or it could be visualizing big and narrowing to specifics. There is a solution and I can find it must be the mantra. The solution could be completely off beat, it could be risky, it may require a tremendous leap of faith or it could be so very simple you start doubting its efficacy. Look at all the technological wonders around you and you would realize that each of them is a marvel in itself. More importantly each improvement is actually a solution to a problem that was worked out by someone who believed they could find a solution.

Create the right environment to act The toughest part of being resourceful is reassuring yourself constantly that you are capable, competent and clear about your resourcefulness paying off. Sometimes it would be the nagging doubts in your mind, other times it could be the nay sayers who discourage you, occasionally it would be those days when nothing seems to go right and mostly it would be the let me give up feeling that comes like waves of a nausea. To cope with this it is essential that you create the right environment. This includes simple things like ensuring you have the right tools to work with, the physical environment suits your temperament, you bounce ideas of people who will give you dispassionate and encouraging feedback, you brace yourself to dealing with failure, your tune your mind to find encouragement in the smallest success that you attain.

Act decisively to attain your objective – This the toughest part of being resourceful because this requires daring and is test of yourself belief. Just as one cannot cross a chasm in two steps, acting decisively means taking a giant leap of faith. The plans on the drawing board would remain just that, till they are translated into concrete action. There are no auspicious moments, no perfect time to begin. Making that commitment by beginning ensures that you will make those extra efforts to keep going. It is possible that you will be tempted to rethink, to reassess, to go back to the drawing board, to give up, to start differently but once you get the momentum it is a commitment that will linger and persist and draw you back to continue.

If at first you don’t succeed, start again. Very few have ever succeeded in their first attempt. However, it is those who didn’t give up their quest for success who ultimately triumph. Few plans pan out the way they are planned. There would be detours, there would be complications, there could be road blocks, there could be frustration and there will be discouragement. Keep your goal in mind. It must be sufficiently big enough to motivate but not so large that you are overawed by the challenge. Most importantly you must enjoy the journey. Be desperate, determined and driven; then you will be resourceful enough to see your dream come through no matter how long it takes or how many attempts it takes.

Try this:

  • Can you think of unique ways to celebrate your birthday or that of a close friend or family member?
  • During the coming week, check out the various cultural activities that will take place in your city and attend at least 2 such activities that you have never even been too. Identify 2 new things you learned in the process and find a way to implement it or utilize it.
  • From the various posts in your social media sites list out 5 posts that caught your imagination. Of these are there any that you think you can replicate or adapt to make the world around you a better place?
  • If you had the resources to start a social service initiative what would you start? How would your initiative be different from those existing? Even without the resources can you implement some of the unique ideas you have in mind?

Take a deep breath and…make a New Beginning

WP14-1-I took a deep breathThere is no better way to start the New Year than using the sage advice given above.  So take a deep breath and let it go.  Broadly there are two things that we need to let go; the first is the past and next is ourselves. The past be it good or bad, sad or joyful, staid or exciting will never come back even if we relive it in our minds and hearts a million times.

Letting go the past is challenging because often the past has important significance in our life.  Death of a loved one, breaking down of relationships, setbacks and failures are common issues that haunt us by quietly slipping into our thoughts and disturbing our peace of mind. Even more difficult to let go are the past mistakes we committed, the hurt we have caused, the anger and revenge that we seek of those who we feel have lets u down or betrayed us. Toughest of all to live down is the self doubt we carry which begins with the thought ‘if only I …’ This lament makes us replay in our minds possibilities that could have played out in a better way; unfortunately the dice is rolled and now there is no replay so brooding over the ‘if only I…’ is futile.

So this New Year is a good time as any to turn the page of your life and move on especially in putting the past behind you. Brooding , worrying, lamenting are adjectives that should be removed from your dictionary of life. The best way to do this is to replace it with more positive adjectives and that can be done when you take another deep breath and let yourself go.

To let yourself go, the key is to aim for specific goals. So when you take a deep breath, fill your lungs with fresh air and your mind with clear objectives to be attained. The goal will be both the reason to let go and provide you the courage of conviction to take some giant steps. The latter requires you to be imaginative and innovative. It would also require you to take creative risks, be open to criticism and have the guts to get up and chase your dreams if at first you don’t succeed.  Notice that in this process you are already imbibing positive thoughts like I can, I won’t give up, let me try this and let me find another way.

Here are a few more pointers to realize if you really are someone who can let go of yourself easily.

Are you a creature of habit? Do you keep following the same routine without daring to experiment with some changes?

Do you have a social circle or a circle of friends of a wide variety and different hues? Identify 5 friends who have nothing in common with each other.

Do you easily conjure up solutions to simple problems that crop up daily in your personal and professional life? Do you avoid finding a solution so that if it fails you won’t be blamed or because you believe the problems are too trivial for you to waste to time on?

Are you the type of person who panics easily or gets stressed frequently or someone who hates surprises or sudden changes?

Go on and discover a New YOU in the New Year !

Try this:

 To understand how you can focus on goals and achieve it, play a game of caroms or get a dart board and aim for the bulls eye. Initially you may find it hard to achieve what you hope to but with focus and practice, you will enjoy success with surprising ease.

Schooling has developed as a structured way of imparting knowledge in an organized, well paced and hopefully effective manner. Unfortunately traditional schooling has limited creativity, given undue importance to structure and form and made teachers, parents and students beholden to examinations, marks and competitive one upmanship.  The good part is that logical thinking has been well entrenched in students, the system attempts to give opportunities to excel for those who are academically inclined while providing ample scope for the less academically gifted to pass and progress.

However there were those who viewed traditional schooling from a different perspective. Those who found traditional schooling restrictive, too standardized and possibly too limiting for children with extra ordinary intellect, propounded the concept of home schooling.  Home schooling has emerged as an alternative but requires extraordinary vision of the parents as well as their whole hearted commitment. The concept of home schooling though has been a revolutionary departure from the traditional concept of schooling since it allows freedom to an extraordinary degree, reinforces the concept of self discipline in students and re defines the very style of teaching and learning. Above all it gives students the alternative to explore a wide range of subjects in the most practical way and to the full extent of their interest and capability.

Despite these apparent benefits of home schooling the concept is still very much in a nascent stage and that begs the question How does one explore different perspectives fruitfully? The answer lies in our ability to

Be open to change – Unless we have an open mind we would only accept what is available and if that does not suit us we would crib/ complaint/ criticize but never explore alternatives. Once we keep an open mind and seek solutions or alternatives various options would immediately come to the fore.

Appreciate the alternatives – Once we identify alternatives it is essential that we probe/ explore/ study and analyze these alternatives with the clear belief that one or more of these alternatives holds the key to what you are seeking. Of course there would be shades of grey in the alternatives, there could be doubts raised by well meaning people and some difficult to accept situations which we would have to overcome as inevitable. E.g. for most people suffering from asthma, where allopathic medicines continues to be ineffective an alternative that is often propounded is the live fish swallowing therapy that is available in Hyderabad. While the thought itself is repulsive for even non vegetarians, it could be terrifying for those who are vegetarians. Yet thousands flock to avail of the therapy simply because they are left with no alternative but to try it.

Let go the tried and tested – This is the bane of the vast majority. To prove the point let me suggest that you quickly try to draw /sketch your own portrait. Chances are that you would first attempt to draw you face, starting with a round outline followed by the eyes and mouth and nose etc. Notice how seasoned artistes approach the same drawing and you will appreciate that there are various alternatives.

Adopt and adapt the new possibilities – While we ideally try to find readymade solutions for our problems/ challenges the reality is that each solution could vary and may need to be adopted with changes or adapted to ensure the expected outcome. Almost all progress made in any field is largely an outcome of experimentation, trial and error as well as infusion of creative inputs.

See benefits however small – Anyone who tries to find a different perspective would find himself/ herself in a hopeless minority and would have a tough time fending off critics and experts who are unable to comprehend your logic/ thinking/ risk taking. The possibility of disillusionment and frustration then is best eliminated by focusing attention on any small outcome that gives a glimmer of hope. Perseverance and determination are traits that are essential for anyone who dares to walk the path less traveled by for it would be a lonely, strange, uncharted territory but holding the promise of immense possibilities.

Try this:

  1. Write down your 3 most serious worries. For each of it jot down 3 alternatives solutions that you can explore to eliminate/ solve/ minimize your worry.
  2. Out of the following alternatives try to attempt at least any two which you have never done before
  • Write a poem / limerick
  • Solve a cross word puzzle
  • Learn and perform a new card trick / magic
  • Learn to tie three different types of knots ( as the scouts do)
  • Write a movie / book review
  • Organize a theme party on your next birthday

The 5W’s of Life unlimited…

Rudyard Kipling made the 5W’s and 1H famous through is immortal poem I Keep Six honest Serving men (http://allpoetry.com/poem/8444911-I-Keep-Six-Honest-Serving-Men-by-Rudyard_Kipling ) and today’s post is an interesting perspective on HOW our response to the 5W’s  holds the key to making our life unique, interesting, and fulfilling. The interpretation of the 5W’s from the perspective of our life is also very intriguing and thought provoking.

Who you are is what makes you special. Do not change for anyone.

Even identical twins have unique personality traits. It is the I in the individual that makes the individual unique, different and special. Of course our hereditary, the growing up environment, our elders, teachers, friends, experiences do influence and mould our individuality. There will be pressures from all around us, that would overtly and covertly influence us to adjust, make changes, confirm to and/ or  display our individuality differently from the real person we are.  Ultimately though, it is our thoughts, our beliefs, our values and our self esteem that will determine our individuality. How we cope with the influences  and pressures of the world around us will determine how true we remain to the unique individual that we are born as.  

What lies ahead will always be a mystery. Do not be afraid to explore.

Each day will bring both surprises and occasionally challenges. However, most days will be routine, staid and boring. While surprises would be a pleasant diversion, challenges can bring quite a bit of stress and yet provide motivation to find solutions. It is the daily grind of the routine, the staid fare called work and monotony that is almost omnipresent that is a huge challenge for the vast majority. Breaking this viciously cycle would be possible only if one is prepared to explore alternatives and create, discover, invent options. It could be as simple as changing the routine style of work, the work place, the approach to work etc. It could be made more exciting and challenging by finding new methods, adopting new styles and reorganizing the existing paradigm. E.g. Compared to the gym routine adopted and followed a few years ago, modern gyms have varied equipment, a variety of exercises, different styles of exercising, have introduced and stressed on diet routines and diet supplements all of these focused on getting more people to get interested and involved.  How do you plan to explore the opportunities around you to make what lies ahead exciting.

When life pushes you over, you push it back.

Have you ever experienced a phase in your life when nothing seems to be going right? Perhaps you have had to endure the pain of facing sudden calamity just when everything seemed so perfect. These are times when life mimics a game of passing the parcel, where you cannot avoid the parcel but don’t know when the music will stop and worse still what forfeit is hidden. The best thing to do is to enjoy the game and play it in the true spirit of the game. Remember the saying then going gets tough the tough get going! How do you plan to get tough, more daring and more resilient coping with and overcoming the vagaries of life?

When there are choices to make, make the one you won’t regret.

When there are choices aplenty, exercising a choice is a challenge especially when the alternatives are equally attractive. Many a time choices are made based on perceived pay offs and unfortunately many a payoff has a subtle hint of either a crooked way or a selfish intent or border on the illegitimate, indecent, illegal or irresponsible. The focus of the payoff should be the long term good that is aligned with the values and beliefs we hold dear to us. The payoff should also not compromise on our self respect, our long term vision and never ever for paltry short term gains. How you analyze, evaluate and decide would help make the choice but what really holds the key to making choices is your upbringing, values system and self belief.

Why things happen will never be certain. Take it in your stride and move forward.

Every action in our life is largely directed at being happy. However most times we realize that despite our best efforts the results are far from happy. There are times when things seem to slip from our grasp at the last moment; other times we don’t seem to see any tangible evidence of happiness even remotely in the distant horizon and then when we get a whiff of happiness it is never ever enough or long lasting. Our patience is tested, our frustrations cold turn to despair, platitudes and endearments no longer hold out hope and yet that is when we must regroup our thoughts, recharge our energies and resolve to begin afresh with faith, hope and anticipation. How quickly you put the past behind, plan for the future ahead and take those strides forward will determine how far we attain our life purpose and self fulfillment.

Try this:

  • Jot down 5- 10 qualities/ attributes / traits/ talents / characteristics that make you a very special person.  Identify also 2-5 personality/ behavioral traits that others find annoying/ irritating in you.
  • Jot down 5 activities/ places/ experiences that you would like to explore over the next 3 months.
  • What are the two decisions that you are still dithering over? Identify reasons for you not being able to make the decision and work on overcoming them.
  • If you were given1 minute to write down your will, would you be able to do it? If your answer is YES write it down now. If your answer is NO, then why are you wasting time – go and prepare your will. Are you sure you will be alive the next minute?

Learning is self driven…

13-17- The perfect teacher

It is possible that many of those reading these posts and particularly those subscribing to the blog occasionally wonder how best they can benefit from what they read. At times they may find the post enlightening but not applicable to them. Sometimes the post maybe a tad too difficult to absorb and digest, whilst there are times, when the sheer weight of the underlying philosophy completely swamps the readers mind. The focus of these posts is to share with readers my perspective, occasionally give pointers for the reader to explore and in this process inspire, motivate and enthuse readers to find their own perspectives that they can leverage to lead a more fruitful and happy life.

Here are four pointers to get the most of these posts

Keep an open mind – There is ample truth in almost every form of communication one is exposed to  provided one does not have a prejudiced mind or a pre conceived notion. We could be biased for many reasons but the worst bias is because we find the truth inconvenient. This could happen because we don’t want to change or because we are given a painful reminder of our wayward ways or because it thrashes our most cherished beliefs. By keeping an open mind, we would benefit from getting a variety of different and possible revealing insights, it is possible that we are woken up from a self induced slumber and it could at times be the key that unlocks our hidden potential.

Discern judiciously – For some people, every new learning seems just perfect to make their life blissful. They passionately believe that the new inputs would be the panacea for all their trials and tribulations. Their enthusiasm is soon tempered by the realization that the new learning may not necessarily suit their style, temperament or situation. It is therefore essential that one uses a judicious mix of common sense, pragmaticism, creativity and reality in discerning and choosing the learning best suited to us.

Attempt to adopt/ adapt the learning While we do understand, appreciate and accept the numerous interesting points that we come across in our everyday life, we are often clueless as to how to make it relevant to our daily life. The secret lies in quickly assimilating the learning and adopting it to fit into our daily life. Many times we would have to adapt the learning to suit our unique individuality.  What holds the key is implementation of the learning, believing in it enough to practice the learning till we master it and in a large number of instances working doubly harder to unlearn the bad practices that are ingrained in us.

Find new meanings As human beings we are expected to go beyond the obvious; to explore, to discover, to create, to realize, to assemble, to reinvent, to stretch the boundaries of our imagination. One can and must do the same with the new inputs that one gets. The challenge lies in innovating, risking and imaginatively utilizing the learning to transcend beyond our comfort and possibly pain zone too. Like a caterpillar that has to struggle through its cocoon to become a butterfly, we too have to find new cocoons to struggle through before we can revel in the beauty of our success, achievements and self discovery.

Try this:

  • Make a greeting card (birthday/ wedding anniversary / congratulatory etc.) out of chart paper and other craft material and give it out on the next relevant occasion.
  • On your next gastronomical outing choose a dining place that serves either Mexican/ Lebanese / French/ Greek cuisine.
  • Gentlemen reading this post are encouraged to go to the kitchen and prepare one dish for a serving for 2 out of the available ingredients and surprise the rest of the family with their super dish.
  • Ladies reading this post are encouraged to go to the parking lot and wash their vehicles ( car/ two wheeler) and discover the joy of tidying beyond the confines of their house.
