12-Unplug and rebootA key reason we get stressed is because we continue to grapple with our problems by constantly attempting the tried and tested ways, instead of stepping back and letting the dust settle. If you have noticed muddy water that has been stirred up, it will be difficult to see through till you let the mud settle. The same happens with our problems and challenges. There is no better example than the numerous devices we use constantly, the mobile phones, the laptops and the near extinct desktops. The simplest way to get it going when it seems to have stalled is to simply switch of the power. Unplug the power and everything settles; then reboot and begin anew.

The best way to unplug from troubles is to distract your mind. This simply means forcefully directing your mind to other more pleasurable alternatives that are stress relievers. Take a walk, watch TV or read a book or get engaged in some activity that you enjoy like your hobbies. While trouble itself will not go away, your mind will become calm and you will be able to think more incisively and get more focus on how to proceed ahead.

Another way to unplug is to unburden. ‘Share your troubles and halve it’  is the principle that we leverage here.  We share our problem with people whom we trust and people who we believe would have some tangible solutions or at least make invaluable suggestions. While we share our problem we also subconsciously get greater clarity about the issue, our mind feels more relaxed that someone else is sharing our burden and the chances of getting some fresh insights from others to alleviate or tackle our burden is higher. Those listening to our problem also offer empathy, support and most of all give us some of their insights into coping with the problem.

The most common way to unplug is to sleep over a problem. This is tougher than it seems simply because a troubled mind would not easily get sleep. However, if one develops a style of setting aside the problem for a fair time, when we re-look the problem new thoughts and solutions seem possible. If one can literally sleep over a problem, the subconscious mind would often work in the background and conjure up possibilities that our conscious mind would not have generated. However one should not be like an ostrich burying its head in the sand hoping the troubles not seen would vanish.

Try these:

  1. Try some simple cross words or Sudoku. At first for those not used to solving such puzzles the challenge seems overwhelming. However, once you make an attempt and try it a few times, you get the hang of it and the challenge would not seem so daunting.
  2. Think of a time you managed to find a solution to a pressing problem by unplugging in the following ways
  • Indulging in your favorite hobby  or passion interest
  • Sharing your troubles and getting answers from another person
  • Sleeping over the problem and waking up to a very innovative solution

9-28-feb-17-who-is-the-hero-of-your-storyThe beauty of life is in its variety, its surprises, its plot twists, its challenges and opportunities but most of all life’s wonder lies in its uniqueness for each one of us. The divergence that seems to pervade each one’s life is also the one that flavors each one’s life to make it special and unique. It poses us a challenge; make it your own story; script it the way you want it and always bear in mind you are the hero/ heroine of that blockbuster. The challenge is best met by being aware of the following:

Embrace life warmly – No one is perfect. No one has everything one wants. All the riches cannot buy happiness. Life is a blessing gifted to you. Embrace it warmly for no one else can live your life. Stop cribbing; seek opportunities; let failures not limit your movement forward and learn to appreciate your blessings.

Be the change – If you want to enhance the quality of your life don’t wait for luck or fate to make it happen. You will have to tempt fate by changing yourself and attempting to tread the path of your dreams. You may be discouraged at times, you may have to retrace your steps occasionally, sometimes you are on a roller coaster ride but land with a thud; get back on the ride.  Let nothing stop you from progressing.

Do something – Sometimes life sucks as the young people like to say. It happens to the best of us. The mantra is when ‘when life sucks don’t get stuck’ ; do something to keep the momentum going so that your heaving yourself out of the pit that you landed in. Be creative, be bold, be different, think out of the box, act upon your instincts and inspirations; don’t just give in- do something.

Live, laugh, leap – A lot of people merely exist; they don’t live. Do not let life sap your energy. Instead find a way to make your life the solar panel from which draw on from, when there is darkness setting in. Laughter is the oil of life that lubricates the tough times that befall us. After all a smile is curve that sets everything straight. Don’t just let life meander along but take a giant leap to discover how far you can jump or test how high you can rise. The view would be different too. The fun is a huge bonus.

Stop, pause, breathe – Do not become part of the rat race. You have to race only against yourself. The race is measured not in terms of distance traversed as much as experiences embraced, number of times you have got after stumbling or falling, discovering latent potential that you possessed and surprising yourself daily. Enjoy the process, the progress and the possibilities that you discover. Stop to stand and stare, pause to catch your breath and breathe deep and recharge yourself with the elixir called life.

Try these:

  1. Read the following inspiring story that largely embraces all that is suggested above https://chairbornewarrior.wordpress.com/2011/06/12/anils-inspirational-note-airborne-to-chairborne/
  2. List out the following
  • Your dream for the future
  • Your passion
  • Your role model
  • Your favorite proverb

Is there anything that binds all the above? What is stopping you from following your passion? How can you imitate your role model ( assuming that your focus will be on the role model’s qualities that are worth emulating) . Are you adopting the proverb in your daily life and making it work for you?

Are you scripting your story with YOU as the hero/ heroine?

33-a-good-dayA perfect day would always be relative to the experiences of the past days yet each of us can strive to make each day a wonderful day. No matter what happens during the course of the day, if the day has not been wasted, it becomes a wonderful day. So the simple rule to follow is to have a plan for each day, strive your best to ensure you have worked well to achieve your plans and at end of day your heart is filled with happiness and satisfaction.

The trouble most of us have us with our time. For most of us, we just don’t have enough time to do all what we want. For others especially those who are retired, time weighs heavily and each day seems slow and unending. The reality is that if we plan each day, we will be busy; we would have something tangible to achieve and end of day we would have made significant progress and less dissatisfaction. A plan would give us something ready to work on, give us a milestone for accomplishment and ensure that we are kept fruitfully occupied.

A plan helps us have a roadmap but we have to walk the talk if we have to reach the destination. The problem for many begins here. While our plan and intent are positive, when it comes to walking the talk, we have a number of excuses, problems and explanations to rationalize our inefficiency and inability to give our best. The trick here is to find a passion and motivation to begin and sustain doing all what we have to do to make our plans become fruitful. In the process we would forget the time, lose ourselves completely in doing what has to be done. Success is never guaranteed but the satisfaction of done a good job, a great effort and a fruitful use of time is certainly guaranteed.

The one issue that spoils an otherwise wonderful day are the sudden unexpected failures, bad news and coping with negative energies and thoughts. Managing that is challenging but not impossible. The way to do that is to change perspective. View each such impediment as ‘ it could have been worse’ or ‘now I have learned that…’ .  It is important to be reasonable and rationale in our thought for it is our thoughts that spur emotions and actions. Once you can control or reorient your thoughts, every day will be a wonderful day, for you would have learned how to appreciate the wonders of each day.

The happiness that follows when we are satisfied that we have given our best shot, is something that is priceless. The happiness is reflected in the sparkle in our eyes, smile on our face and then everything else fades into oblivion. We may look overworked, we may be wearing crumbled clothes, our hair could be ruffled and unruly but there would be a spring in our step, our aura would exude success and excitement is palpable.

A wonderful day would be all these and more…try it and see the difference.

Try these:

  • Write down a plan for 2nd weekend of the next month. Follow the plan and find out for yourself if plans work.
  • What would you do with the money you win of Rs.1 lakh in a lottery?
  • What are the three priority areas in your life that you would want to improve upon? Do you have a plan for achieving it?

11- 27th July 14 - Never DespairOne of the concerns of every human being is his/ her anxiety about the future. This is largely the result of 3 factors; our wistful hope that we can be enveloped by happiness at all times, our innate desire to live up to the expectations of others and our reluctance to accept disappointments or failures. The fact that there are unexpected twists and turns that crop up each day, further complicates our life, adds to our anxieties and makes tomorrow seem a formidable reality, for nothing is sure.

If one pauses and thinks hard, each today is nothing but a collection of yesterdays which we have combated successfully. This means no matter what the challenge, whatever the uncertainty and irrespective of overwhelming odds, we can triumph. This gives us a clue as to how to cope with the certainty of uncertainty that we are destined to live with but well equipped to cope with. The answer lies in the innumerable possibilities that open up simply because when nothing is sure, everything is possible.

Identifying and grabbing possibilities that can be profitably harnessed by us is possible, if one is able to view it from a prism that filters the future through the following lens.

Be optimistic – Since we live in a dynamic world, we will always be beset with changes of varying nature. There are moments when we are thrilled and then there are moments of frustration; there are moments of ecstasy and there will be moments of agony; there will be times when we despair and times when we feel invincible. The challenge for us is to come to terms with the reality and to visualise the residue of good that still exists long after the pain of the problem has gone. Scoring poorly in exams is a very painful process but it is not the end of the world. Sometimes we discover our true strength in those subjects in which we score better or think up alternatives for our future that we never explored before. Train yourself to visualise and see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Be pragmatic – Every passing moment is dynamic and throws up a clutch of possibilities. At this precise point you have the choice to read further or to delve into another task. You will read further if you see it as adding value, perceive the contents as useful and imagine that reading further will give you additional positive inputs. On the other hand if you have an exam coming up, reading this further should not be a priority over studying for the exams. Notice that the choice exists, the possibilities are real; you have to decide what the most pragmatic thing to do is.

Seek positives – Look at a problem as a riddle to be solved. View it as a challenge that tests out imagination, helps us conjure ingenious solutions and fires up our spirit of resilience. Problems could also be nature’s way of slowing us down when we are possibly hurtling down a path of self destruction. A failure in exams or a pink slip at work might actually be just the right medicine that enables us to recover stronger. A wrong turn on a journey might just give you a breathtaking view just as a missed flight may have saved your life. The key to finding positives is to acceptance of the reality and then focusing on what good has come from the situation you are in.

Create opportunities – The human race has survived because our ancestors never gave up when faced with problems. They tried to find out ways and means to overcome or circumvent the problem they faced. Later they anticipated problems and worked on possible ways to effectively deal with the problem thus creating opportunities for themselves. Opportunities are also created by having a vision that is transcribed into a goal and then translated into a solution. In fact you will shape your future by the opportunities that you create rather than the problems that you overcome/ solve.

So when nothing is sure, there is an opportunity to create and attain what you want.

Try this:

Make a list of 3-5 things you have never done in your life but would definitely love to do sometime in your life. Outline a plan to create an opportunity to make it happen.

List out three disappointments in your life. Can you make a list of at least 2 positives for each of these disappointments?

7-10Jun 14- View the trailer of your life to be

If our life were a movie, how interesting it would be to see the trailer of it and feel the thrill and excitement that is yet to come. No doubt there would be moments of pain and anguish, disappointments and frustrations, but like most movies, the end would always be a happy, idealistic and hopefully enjoyable one. Unfortunately, the movie of our life is scripted daily and so we continue to be a hero/ heroine on the stage of our life, little knowing what is scripted for us. Fortunately, we are also blessed with the gift of imagination, which enables us to take charge of our life, script and direct it the way we want to and succeed in large measure to have the most idyllic ending. So get set to telescope your imagination into your future and script your own success. Doing this is a simple matter of being imaginative ; begin by stating your life goals, anticipate the success you will achieve, roll up your sleeves and participate in the process, creating something tangible that you imagined and celebrating your achievements.

State – We often have wild fantasies, crazy ideas, some passionate beliefs, some out of the box thoughts etc but rarely do we ink it out and mull over it. As long as you can transcribe your imagination into words/ pictures/ doodles you will be able to attempt some work on it. Imagination should begin in the head but must be stated and spelled out clearly. Right now the best way to utilize the learning from the post is to jot down at least 3 ideas that came to your mind as you read this post.

Anticipate – If you have written down at least one idea, you would notice that your mind is already thinking about it even as you read the post. There is a sense of anticipation that the idea is workable. You are already evaluating alternatives to make the idea work. If you haven’t got an idea, you are reading further in the hope that you will get an ideas you read the post or at least at some point get some idea sometime later. Notice that it is this anticipation of getting a benefit that is motivating you to read. So stating your goal or vision or idea or dream helps you anticipate the next possibilities to attain your stated objective.

Participate – If you want things to happen, you have to start moving things. This essentially means you have to participate in the process. You give wings to your imagination and soar towards your goal by building the wings through effort, team work, rework, network and hard work. Even when you play a game, the key is your participation; if you don’t participate you can neither enjoy the game and for sure you cannot expect to succeed in the game. Participation must as far as possible be voluntary, self driven and pleasurable.

Create – As you sow so shall you reap; your intent, purpose, extent and passion in participation will determine what and how you create and achieve your goals/ dreams/ wish list. The process of translating your imagination into something tangible could be frustrating, backbreaking and dodgy. Yet, the experience would be invaluable, the rewards exhilarating and self fulfillment complete. There are times we won’t achieve perfection, some outcomes would be disappointing and criticism can be a constant companion but as long as you are progressing towards your goal and creating your dreams into reality, your life will be fulfilling.

Celebrate– The best part of imagination is not in day dreaming but in realizing that dream; in being a part of the achievement; in sharing the joy of the success and in relishing the fruits of success. Achievement is not merely a statistic but a vibrant creation and you are the heartbeat that pumps life into that creation.

Give your imagination wings and then use them to soar up high and enjoy the view.

Try this

  • How would you creatively / imaginatively dispose of your old clothes, books, footwear, odds and ends that are unnecessarily occupying space?
  • If you were to organize a party what unique games will you incorporate to make the party more entertaining and participative.
  • Considering your academics and interest, think up 3 unique career opportunities that you can possibly explore.

PS: Transcribe your answers into tangible achievements in the next 6 month.

WP14=4-Are you a Pessimist, Optimist or RealistEach of us responds to stimulus in different ways. Our response is often influenced by our beliefs and attitudes which in turn are shaped by our experiences, our thoughts and our individuality. One common denominator that offers insights into our responses and reactions is the mindset that we frequently display based on which most of us are often labeled as either pessimists or optimists. There are of course exceptions who get a more privileged tag of realist. While pessimism is largely considered a negative trait and optimist hailed as exemplary the realist is often ignored as inconsequential. In life, each of these traits has it’s own utility and are qualities essential for both survival and success.

Pessimists are prone to see the negatives. They will be cautious, circumspect and hesitant. Their first instinct is self preservation and as a result their lexicon is filled with words like avoid, delay, evade, be circumspect, use caution, find problems, make excuses etc. Pessimists prepare for the worst so that if their fears come true they are not taken in by surprise and instead can feel vindicated. Pessimism is considered a very undesirable trait and pessimists are largely given a wide berth by most people. However pessimism is an important trait in as much as it considers eventualities taken for granted or blissfully ignored and puts brakes on otherwise unfettered exuberance. A good pessimist is the gate keeper who is pragmatic, cautious and prepared to cushion the fall if and when it takes place.

Optimists are those who are exuberant and gung ho about everything. They are driven by the need to see the silver lining in every cloud even if there is thunder and lightning all around. Their lexicon includes words like must try, it will work, right now, make it happen; success is round the corner etc. Optimists go about their business with a daring and a sense of Déjà vu. Their dictionary centers around words like I can, must do, not hard, must try, can be done, give it a shot etc. Optimists have the added advantage of being widely accepted for their never say die attitude, spirit of enthusiasm and eagerness to get going. An optimist must however be aware of the reality, be pragmatic and be able to distinguish between ego masquerading as self confidence and misplaced bravado replacing one’s inability to retreat.

The realist is one who dispassionately assesses and goes after the results through a mix of daring and caution. Realists are grounded in their thinking, attitude and responses. They are neither carried away by the moment nor are they deterred by circumstances. Their success lies in their balanced approach to challenges and opportunities. In their thinking what works is being practical, being flexible, being creative and being result oriented. They adjust to circumstance, create opportunities, do not take foolish risks, they don’t hesitate to retreat if discretion is the better part of valor and they won’t give up unless they attain what they set out to achieve. A realist is able to live in the present, while assessing the future and learning from the past.

Try this:

If you were given 5 wishes to be fulfilled, what would those wishes be? Would that wish list change if you were told that you have just one day left to enjoy the fulfilled wishes?

If you were forced to choose one of the following options which one would you choose and why?

–          Losing all your material possessions in a fire

–          Losing your speech and hearing

–          Remaining illiterate

–          Letting your worst enemy win a lottery of a million dollars

–          Having to spend the rest of your life eating raw vegetables only

Here is your assignement for the year

  1. You will receive a body. Quickly peek at yourself in the mirror. Better still admire your pictures preferably starting with the ones from your childhood, school days , college days, wedding time…. Have you noticed how you have grown? If you need to improve on you physical self, what is stopping you? Learn to love your body and you will take care of it better.
  1. You will learn lessons. Each day brings about new learning. It is a mixed bag; exciting, boring, painful, fun filled. How you learn from the lessons of life will make a qualitative difference to your daily living and your attitude and your circle of influence. Let the bitter lessons make you better and the exciting lessons motivate you.
  1. There are no Mistakes; only lessons.Mistakes are what we label those efforts that are not channelized right. In life no effort goes waste for it is the fount of all learning and so there are no mistakes only lessons from which we learn. If you stub your toe, is it a mistake? If you choose to attempt something dangerous and fail is that a mistake? If you decide to be a silent spectator instead of an active participant is that a mistake?
  1. A lesson is repeated until it is learned. This is the reason we keep repeating our mistakes for the lesson is not fully imbibed by us. If failure is a bitter lesson, success is a lesson in seeing hard work and effort pay off. Along the way there are lessons learnt from frustrations, irritation, patience, annoyance, disappointments and the like.
  1. Learning lessons does not end.Just when you think you have mastered something, you are faced with a new test. It could be handling people, coping with personal and professional challenges, sudden changes in social, professional or personal environment.
  1. ‘There’ is no better than ‘Here’An old adage that states that the ‘grass is greener on the other side’ sums it up all. No matter what we strive for or attain, when we look back each moment of our life has its own significance. While our riches and successes add luster to our life, we often lapse into the recess of our ‘good old days’ too. Don’t we all nostalgically look back to the days gone by?
  1. Others are merely mirrors of you. While your individuality is unique, the reality is that we have much more in common with each other than what we can imagine. Each one of us shares the same emotions and express ourselves in ways much like others. In liking or disliking others we are merely mirroring an image that we consciously or unconsciously have imbibed. The same is true of everyone else. Isn’t it time we made and effort to imbibe the best and thereby reflect the best in us and simultaneously learn to see the good in others?
  1. What you make of your life is up to you.People, circumstances and luck are labels we give to justify our success or failures in life. The truth is that it is up to us to gravitate towards the right people, chance upon the right circumstances and make the best of every opportunity that comes our way. As Longfellow says ‘We are the captain of our ship, the master of our fate’
  1. The answers lie inside you.Far too often we ask the wrong questions and alas we end up with frustrating answers.  We crave for what we do not have, pine for what we do not deserve and can conjure up a million excuses to justify ourselves. Ask yourself ‘what is it that I am seeking’ and presto you will see the way forward, grasp the truth and suddenly your life will light up too.
  1. Whether you think you can or can’t, in either case you will be right. To sum it all up, it is all in your mind. Think right, feel right, live right is the message.

So there is no better time than now to grasp the truth, face the reality and rework on your life and make it a journey of happiness and fulfillment.

Try this:

  • Have a relook at your New Year Resolution and if you don’t have one, get down to writing it down. For reference look up the immediate preceding post.
  • If not in one sentence, at least in 3- 5 sentences can you write down your personal ‘mission’ statement.
  • Out of the above 10 truths, pick the one truth that appeals the most to you and make it your ‘statement of purpose’ for the coming year.
