Making dreams come true

All of us at various times have a wide variety of dreams and fantasies. There are some dreams that seem to come back with regularity and at times they also become day dreams. They are largely connected with happiness, success, achievement, appreciation, recognition and similar positive images. The problem is that for most of us, these remain pipe dreams that we do not translate into concrete achievements that can embrace those positive emotions. The problem is not with the dreams but our inability to cross the chasm between dreams and reality. The steps are crystal clear, the difficulty is our inertia. Overcome that inertia and do the following:

Turn dreams to goals – Wake up and if you can visualize your dream then you are definitely getting somewhere. Grab a pen and paper and jot down the dream not in a fanciful way but in a concrete pragmatic way.  E.g. you dreamt that you stood first in class. Reality is that currently you have a backlog and are in the bottom half of the class. Now to make your dream a goal, be pragmatic. Jot down your goal as ‘clear my back log and get 20 % more marks in all subjects than my previous score.’ Notice that your goal is more tangible than merely imagining standing first.

Break down every goal into action plans – This is even more crucial then jotting down your goal. Now you are making your goal a SMART goal by being more Specific about the steps to be taken (how will you plan a study time table, what subjects would you pay more attention too etc.) , Using a Measure ( in this case score), ensuring that it is Attainable ( you should not try to achieve ridiculous things beyond your ability like saying scoring 80% in all subjects because current performance standards are way below that), be Realistic ( if you are currently studying  only on the previous day of the exam it would be foolhardy to imagine yourself studying for 8 hours every day ) and ensure your goal is clearly Time bound. Of course, the example given is for an average person but there could be people who have a much more steely resolve and the ability to cope with bigger challenges that they map out for themselves.

Take action – All the goals and action plans turn to successful results only when one takes the action required. Taking action means you need to find the right motivation ( ideally intrinsic motivation), develop the right attitude ( avoid all distractions, remain focused, do not give into temptations ) and remain enthusiastic ( reward yourself for the small success you encounter when you stick to your action plans) and then do what you have to do to achieve your goal ( in this case regular study, practice regularly, revise frequently, )

Try these:          

  1. List out three personal weaknesses you want to overcome. Now write down your smart goals to achieve it and see tangible results in the next 3 months.
  2. Write down your goals and action plan for the following:
  • To increase your savings
  • To improve your fitness
  • To minimize your social media addiction
  • To develop your social circle

What is meant to be will always find its way

As we approach the last month of the year, there is a tendency to look back at the year gone by and reminiscence about the good, the bad and the ugly that happened to us. There would be moments of pain that we recall, there would be ecstatic moments which send our spirits soaring high and there would be some frustrations that are irritating to recall. However, what we find toughest to cope with are the moments of regrets that overwhelm us; we desperately wish then that we could turn the clock back and redo things differently. This lingering feeling of haplessness; of missing out on opportunities to change our destiny keep haunting us for a much longer time. In this time of reminiscence, one must also keep in mind the reality that ‘what is meant to be will always find its way’ just as in the picture above, the quaint flowers bloom along a forlorn, deserted, almost arid sidelines of the railway track.

Once we awaken to this profound truth that ‘what is meant to be will always find its way’ we would be less delusional, more practical and certainly more optimistic that the best is yet to come. This in no way means that you can sit back and wait for good fortune to parachute into your life. Instead, it is an exhortation that we must continue to give of our best and the fruits of our labor will be sweet and plentiful, when the time comes. The year gone by would have had its shares of ups and downs but our focus must be on the highs in our life, the hopes that we have for the times ahead and we must inbuilt in us, the ability to visualize the fruits of success. Dreams give you a reason to aspire, a focus to aim at and a pinnacle to scale. Life will no longer be arid, parched and infertile. We will plant the seeds of hope, water it with faith, nurture it with diligence and reap the fruits in abundance.

Patience is the one virtue that each one must cultivate. No seed sprouts overnight to grow into a plant. Similarly, all our actions, our sacrifices our energies will bear fruit only when the time is ripe. Of course, it is assumed that we align our actions with reality and not dig wells where there is no semblance of water. It is also good to keep in mind that often we are bestowed with what we can really cope with, manage efficiently and accept with good cheer. Plant seeds of hope, faith and good cheer in your heart and let your mind and body help you plough your life ahead. When the time comes, gather the flowers, fruits and produce and share it. You will receive what you deserve sooner than later. It may not be in a form or shape that you expect but it is yours for the picking if you look for it.

Try these:           

  • List names of 5 people who you know personally. One must be a family member, the other a colleague, an acquaintance, a neighbor and a person who assists you in some way (house help / liftman / security guard/ gardener etc.)
  • Can you recollect the best moment you had last week. What do you think will be the most wonderful thing that can happen to you before the month end?
  • If someone gifted you Rs.1,000 what will you do with it before the month end?
  • How will you view things if your wallet got stolen and it had Rs.5,000?

You will…

You will…

It is good to have great dreams, ambitions and aspirations. It means that you are thinking of the future, that you are focusing on certain achievements and that you seek to achieve something significant in your life. However, the more critical step is to overcome the doubts about your ability to realize your goals. In the beginning the dream looks enticing but as you begin to think more seriously and deeply about it, self doubts, fear of overcoming the obstacles and your own indecisiveness to commit to the goal become self limiting behavior.

You can do whatever you set your mind on but it requires effort. It is not just hard work but smart work that helps you reach your goals faster. Smart work is planning well for any task, identifying the best way to quickly and effectively manage a task and then putting it into practice. Hard work compliments smart work in that one has to diligently and consistently put in the personal efforts required. In some cases it could be merely doing a small part of the job yourself but would involve having systems and control over other tasks delegated or outsourced. The latter part is the outcome of smart work where you seek the help of experts or delegate routine jobs and you focus fully on the activities that you have to do yourself.

You should not let your concerns overshadow your dreams. The tendency to analyze indefinitely, the habit of vacillating between options and the wait for the right moment often derail well thought out plans. It is not to say that one must not be careful nor should one be impulsive. However one should be able to, within a reasonable time frame decide on the course of action to be taken so as to begin the journey towards achieving ones dreams/ goals/ passion.

You will when you start. Well begun is half done, provided, one begins. Waiting for all the pieces to fall in place before beginning would be an exercise in futility. The beauty of life is its unpredictability that is sometimes exhilarating and occasionally frustrating. Begin when you have the big picture and a reasonable amount of details in place. Be flexible in your progress so as to make adjustments to  chart your course right along the way. The key is to begin.

When you can set your mind to achieve something, then you should let your passion outweigh your concerns and you will succeed once you start.

Try these:           

  • Over the next one week get in touch with people who you know well but haven’t been in touch for over six months. Experience their surprise, more so when they realize your communication to them was just a friendly gesture.
  • Plan out a unique birthday gift for each of your family members. Execute it on the respective dates.
  • Tomorrow do something that you have never done before.

Passion is priceless

The one question that is uppermost in the minds of people is ‘how can I make a success of myself?’ They are seeking answers that relate to the kind of education to be taken, the skills sets required and the type of work experience that can make an individual successful. They do get various answers and yet they remain confused for they are either not inclined to take the hard route or they feel they are inadequate to succeed. The secret to being successful lies in pursuing whatever one does with passion. If passionate no obstacle will be too hard, no mountain too high and reaching out to the stars would seem like child’s play.

You know you have the Passion when you meet the following conditions:

Deep interest – Unless one has a deep interest in whatever one pursue, passion would be the furthest thing that the person is pursuing it for. Very often students take specializations in the their studies not based on what they are interested in but based on what they think the future will want. While some of them manage to get motivated by the future, many students feel they are in a bind as they are unable to change tracks while having no liking for what they are pursuing. Making a success of the future without any interest in what one is pursing, is then an oxymoron.

Enjoying the pursuit How will a person not having any interest be ever enjoying what she/ he is doing. At times there would be some interested in a certain thing, but they find it hard to cope with the rigors demanded and so they do not enjoy what they do. Without enjoyment, there can be no passion. Take the case of someone pursuing professional sports. While the sport itself may interest the person, the waking up early, rigorous practice, strict diet regime etc may soon prove to be a cross to hard to bear. That is when enjoying the pursuit becomes a penance. No passion is ever penance.

Welcoming challenges – When one is passionate, one is always aiming to raise the bar higher. It is tougher, challenging and fraught with risk of failure. Yet, that is the true test of the deep passion one has for the activity being perused. The challenge keeps the adrenaline flowing, the motivation to succeed high and the pursuit of goals interesting. Welcoming and overcoming challenges is the proof of the passion one has for ones pursuits.

Finding reasons to continue – Many a time, despite ones best efforts, there will be problems, defeats, pain and frustration that will be hard to shake off easily. It is at those times, that one’s passion becomes the inspiration, reason and gives focus for continuing with hope. A classic case is when a player gets injured or has a lean season. Yet, with diligence, persistence and faith she/ he keeps practicing to get back into the reckoning. Even founders of startups face innumerable problems like cash flow trickling, key members leaving, orders not flowing in etc. It is their passion that will keep them going till they turn the corner. A reason to succeed is passion in play.

Try these:           

  1. What are the excuses that often crop up and impeded your pursuit of your passion? How do you propose to eliminate these excuses?
  2. List three of your passions as under
  • A passion that lets you relax
  • A passion that enables you pursue something you trying to get better at
  • A passion that you have yet to explore fully

Don’t Quit but ideally go ahead and DO IT

In a fast paced materialistic world, quick success is what the expectation norm is. Unfortunately this also comes with a downside that people give up too fast when they do not attain what they seek in the short time frames they set for themselves. Society in general, the family unit and the community in particular are equally to blame for pushing people to achieve unrealistic expectations. Higher exam scores, high paying jobs, amassing wealth etc. have become the yardstick to judge success. Gone into the background are qualities like hard work, honest ways, morals and etiquette’s. Perhaps this explains the rising suicides, the increase in psychological/ neurotic illness, spate of violence and rampant intolerance reflected in incidence of road rage, robberies, cyber crimes and off late trolling. The average conscientious citizen then is under tremendous pressure to perform or quit. It takes tremendous courage, will power and self respect to follow ones dreams, passion, goals and to express ones thoughts freely, in the face of constant scrutiny, criticism and unrealistic expectations from others.

I am sharing an Acronym that should be a good guide to help you overcome the feeling of quitting and instead of simply saying a passive Don’t Quit and keep it for another time, become proactive and go on and DO IT  :

Develop – The focus is on finding ways and means to work and bring into fructification various dreams, aspirations, goals that you have set for yourself. Do not let criticism, negativity or failures hamper you from pursuing your ultimate aim. Developing your mind, spirit and work is essential for you to make progress however slow in the right direction. The task may seem ominous, it may begin to sprout doubts in your mind but as long as you plant the seeds of self belief, exude passion and are prepared to roll up your sleeves and work you will develop in body, mind and soul.

Opinions – Form your own opinions and also seek the opinion of those who matter. Consult elders, experts, mentors and those in your circle of positive influence. Each of them will be able to contribute even if it is by way of constructive criticism or pragmatic wisdom or by simple encouragement. Remember they have your welfare in mind. However, also remember that they may not be able to see your vision or feel your passion and so they could be conservative in their thinking and opinions. Ultimately you have to assimilate and then decide the course of action or the corrective course of action to be taken. Focus on Doing it.

Ideas  – You mind might be spinning with ideas. You see opportunity in various forms. At the same time you could also be seeing problems in every opportunity. Remember that the problems are there to make you grounded and realistic but not put to make you pessimistic and faint hearted. At times some ideas seem to be exceptional and you are just itching to get it going. All ideas need to be vetted thoroughly and mulled over and planned. Only then can you begin. Follow the process and Do It.

Thoughts – The crux of success lies in your ability to think positively. Your thoughts must be focused on achieving your plans and goals. Your thoughts must be on finding solutions, overcoming obstacles and managing constraints. This will enable you to come up with alternatives, bring about clarity on how to proceed further and will also reinforce your belief in your plans. Never let the mind falter when you face a crisis. Instead, use the power of you mind it to think differently, to be innovative and to be goal focused. Solutions will present itself . All you need to do then is DO IT.

 Try these:

What are the three things you have kept on hold and not attempted yet. How about drawing up an action plan to DO IT?  Then instead of just saying Don’t Quit but I shall keep it on the back burner now say DO IT and get cracking.

How about attempting something new that you never ever thought of doing?  Maybe learn some new skill or be a wee bit more adventurous with your choice of picnics/ parties / get together. Go on ensure that you DO IT differently the very next opportunity that comes.

Dare to move ahead

We have great plans, grand ideas and visualize success often. All of these are essential to give us a road map to begin our quest to glory. Yet, what is critical is beginning the journey to conquest. Just when we are about to begin our quest, we begin to have doubts, anxieties, start to question our self belief and decide to postpone the beginning for another day. Instead of focusing on what could go right we have foolishly started worrying about what could go wrong. It is essential to note that we cannot control all the variables nor can we succeed beyond measure in the first shot. Failure is an essential part of the journey to success. What helps us succeed is beginning with hope, pursuing with passion, correcting ourselves along the way as required and relentlessly pursuing our goal.

Here are 4 pillars that will prop you up and give you the confidence to dare to move ahead.

Optimism – One you have identified your passion or dream, the most important ingredient that can help you begin the journey is optimism. As they say keep facing the sun and you will never see the shadows. Keep in sight all the key milestones that you need to attain and slowly but surely you would progresses well. Having faith in your abilities, believing that you have planned well and being sure that you are going to enjoy the journey are triggers that will help you remain optimistic along the journey.

Passion – If monetary rewards or financial success is the only motivator that drives you, chances are that your journey will get derailed simply because you are being driven by an extrinsic motivator. There is no substitute for an intrinsic motivator. Passion comes about when one is able to indulge in what one loves and knows that the indulgences is not merely a passing phase but a lifeline to success which you can enjoy every single moment.

Resilience – Despite the best of planning there could be some critical moments in the journey where one begins to question one’s commitment to the goal. Unexpected hurdles, sudden crisis, failure when least expected and or having to face criticism and nay sayers frequently can puncture an individual’s self belief. It is to overcome these moments of doubt, anxiety and fear of failure that one needs to have tremendous resilience to fight the odds. Resilience is continuing to march on even when the going is almost perilous, defeat is lurking at every corner and it is blind belief in one’s abilities to overcome that keeps one afloat. As long as there is resilience, you will not let a small hole in the boat sink you.

Action – The proof of the pudding is in the eating; similarly all the planning, optimism, passion and resilience fructify only if you act. Start doing. Do not wait for an auspicious day, date or time. Ideally fix a date to start and then work backwards on the planning and steps to be taken. Do not postpone your date with destiny. It is possible that no sooner you start things may not go as planned. That is when your optimism will provide the wind below your wings. Your passion will add momentum to your efforts. Despite this if you still are floating like an aimless kite, your resilience will enable you to channelize your energies and focus on your goals and keep you moving towards that. One thing is for sure; action alone will give you the thrust and velocity to attain your dreams.

Try these:

  1. Find a way to increase your savings. Earn more or spend less. So what can you do on either front?
  2. Plan a unique budget holiday in which you will spend not more than 65% of the average budget you would otherwise have spent for a similar holiday.
  3. Challenge yourself to do something you have never attempted before. E.g. sing at a karaoke night or learn a new form of dancing etc.

Prove it to yourself

For most people frustration creeps in when one feels unappreciated, unrecognized and  unknown despite us doing what we think is an awesome job. The real problem unfortunately is that out thinking is flawed. While the ego would want to be noticed, recognized and appreciated, what one fails to put in perspective is that one must learn to enjoy and take pride in what one does. This can happen if we constantly exceed our own expectations. Once you prove your abilities and potential to yourself, your personal gratification of a job well done, would not need you to seek out third part confirmation.

Here are 5 ways to prove yourself to yourself:

Take on a challenge – Almost every moment we are challenged to focus on our goals, prepare for eventualities, fight boredom and laziness etc. That apart there could be bigger challenges that come either out of a work situation or because of a personal crisis or because someone has set you a task and challenged you to take the dare. Every one of these challenges is an opportunity for you to prove yourself to yourself because that is how you get things accomplished which you otherwise would have found tough to do.

Pursue a dream – It is possible that at various times you had fanciful ideas and dreams or wishes. Due to pragmatic considerations it is possible you let those dreams remain and focused on a way to make a living and life that would give you economic freedom, respect and domestic bliss. Yet the craving to achieve a dream perhaps still remains. It could be something very personal like learning a new language or mastering a musical instrument or it could be something off beat like trying to moonlight as a comedian or a writer or an actor. Whatever your unfulfilled dream, bring it to the fore and give it your best shot.

Move out of your comfort zone – By habit we try to stick to the tried and tested. Occasionally one may experiment with fashion or food but when it comes to attempting something that requires a long term commitment or that has a serious element of risk but with an equally tantalizing prospect of reward we err on the side of caution. We simply let those opportunities pass by.  Perhaps you get a tempting offer to change your passion into a profession but with the challenge of having to sacrifice your current stable occupation; ask yourself what your next move will be. By moving out of your comfort zone even in matters like pursuing your dream or taking on a challenge you prove yourself to be someone with courage, daring and confidence. That is the stepping stone to taking bigger risks of moving out of your comfort zone perhaps by moving location, maybe changing jobs, perhaps starting your own venture etc.

Stop cribbing / complaining – One common factor that binds most of us is complaining about what should be right. We also take pleasure in pontificating about what ought to be done, what is not being done and how one would have done it; alas very few of us walk the talk. We criticize our housing societies, the municipal corporation, the state government, the national government but do not get involved in any action plans initiated by any of these agencies. We have our own rationale and excuse for indulging in the very matters we crib about. A classic case is bribing authorities to get work done which is what be complain and crib about regularly. If you simply stop complaining and whining that would be a major step in proving to yourself that you will not let the problems around demotivate or stress you out. If you can go the next mile by proactively getting involved in a social cause that you yearn to bring a change in that will be a humongous proof that you can do what it takes to be your own person irrespective of the challenge/ pain / sacrifice that involves.

Be the change – The best way to prove yourself to yourself is to be the change you want to see around you. It could be simple matters like sticking to your commitments, adhering to the time schedule or it could be by being bolder and  standing up for what you believe is right, opposing what you serious differ with and being willing to stick your neck out for those who are wronged. You may have to confront the critics, perhaps alienate your friends who differ with your views, be in a minority because of your views but by being the change you want to see, you will see yourself proving your own independence, taking pride in your sense of responsibility and seeing yourself making a difference to the world around you.

Try an explore the following opportunities to prove you have it in you to make a difference

  • Join an NGO and volunteer there.
  • Explore a strength that you posses that you have never utilized effectively e.g. taking tuition’s in maths or taking a sports coaching in a discipline in which you are/ have been strong or if you are good musician but never been part of a band try to join a band.
  • Write a letter to a newspaper or create a short video about something that you feel strongly about. E.g. stray animals / misuse of social media /

Everyone nurtures dreams, has aspirations and hopes to have a wonderful life. Yet very few fulfill their yearnings. In fact, the majority of people live a relatively unsatisfied, regret filled and obscure life, not because they did not have the potential or the opportunities but because they did not proactively respond to the opportunities provided by life. To make your life more meaningful, satisfying and fulfilling you need to attempt the following:

Set a goal The biggest challenge life presents is by offering each one so many options that focusing on what one really and passionately seeks becomes a humongous task. We indulge in all our fancies without committing ourselves to any; we seek happiness in pursuing various ideas/ thoughts/ dreams without really focusing on one single passion. We find it hard to discover our passion because we are distracted by so many attractive alternatives. Hence one needs to spend time in reflecting, analyzing, understanding and identifying ones personal ‘mission statement’ that will encompass what your life’s epitaph should read like.  You clearly know the exact direction to get going, you set the right tone for your future mission and you can then track your progress and make adjustments to ensure you reach your goal on time.

Plan your way forward – In real life when one is planning a holiday, notice how much planning is done to ensure that everything essential for the journey is assembled, packed, checked, rechecked before we embark to our destination. Unfortunately in the journey of life we wake up each morning and hope that we manage to stumble through the day and benefit from our waking hours. Perhaps that accounts for our feeling of despondency of a wasted day. We need to plan, prepare and proactively work on making our life mission a successful journey. Perhaps you need to upgrade some life skills, perhaps you need to ensure you get the right companions on board, perhaps one needs to take smaller steps before risking the giant leaps.

Begin in earnest – The biggest stumbling block in life is inertia. Many of us require someone to push us. Others search in vain for the right time to begin. Yet there are others perennially finding excuses to not begin. Others start and falter because they lack the petrol of life called ‘enthusiasm’. Just like the deadline set by the transportation which we have to board to begin the journey, we need to set a date and work backward to ensure we are ready to board the journey of life. The journey of life is not getting up each morning and bumbling through the day. That is inevitable for anyone who is alive. The real journey of life is when we set out to fulfill a pre planned mission that we have set for ourselves. Find the right motivation, ample enthusiasm and the right companions so that your journey is one of hope, joy and fulfillment.

Keep going – Unlike a regular journey where one reaches and enjoys the place before returning back, the journey of life is a continuum. There is no specific destination to reach but a clear goal to attain. You need to enjoy the journey and make the best of the places you reach. At times the journey gets tedious, other times the place you reach is uninteresting sometimes the companions get irritating and often one gets weary and tired. Yet that is when we need to take baby steps or occasionally tip toe so that we do not lose the momentum and more importantly we keep progressing.

Try these:

  1. If you were invited to act in a play ( something you have never ever done before) or asked to join a month long trip to Antarctica or selected to train as a jungle safari guide for a month, which option would you choose and why? What steps would you take to try and make your dream come true?
  2. Attempt any or some of the following:
  • Try reading magazines / books of different genres that you have never tried before.
  • Visit some interesting / varied places in your city that you have never gone to.
  • Eat some cuisine that you have never tried before or visit eateries that offer off beat food.
  • Identify 5 random people who you can observe closely. Observe them for a few days and identify at least two positive qualities or habits that they display. Try and adopt one of those habits and qualities.

I don’t quit

Everyone faces problems. Each one has to confront his/ her fears regularly. Worry and stress are as much part of our lives as are happiness and contentment.  However, there is one danger that worry and stress triggers; the danger of giving up; of surrendering; of quitting. At times it is possible that giving up chasing an unrealistic and improbable craze is the right solution. Most times though, we give up simply because we let our stress cloud our judgment, our rational and weaken our ability to stay strong.

Taking deep breathes both figuratively and practically always helps calm nerves. Figuratively, as long as we can breathe, you are alive to make a change/ a difference to your life. Practically speaking, deep breathes help calm nerves, enables one to postpone drastic judgment and gives one time to contemplate the next wise move. The focus must be on finding a solution rather than getting overwhelmed by the challenge on hand. To find a solution, it is important to mull the problem from the prism of possibility and not view it from an imaginary kaleidoscope of despair, hopelessness and impossibility. The possibilities may not be visible immediately and anxiety can be coming in waves that threaten to drown you. Instead you must become like a duck that appears calm on the water but is furiously paddling below. Explore possibilities, take help if required, keep trying and suddenly you will have unraveled the knot that seemed to have tied you up forever.

Coping with stress requires mental toughness. Self belief is the key. Self belief breeds courage, it opens doors to possibilities and unlocks hidden potential. Deep breathing as a technique is a quick and effective way to cope with stress.  With every breath you take the oxygen going in energizes you and with each breathe we expel, the toxicity within gets thrown out. It lays the foundation for one to de-stress. Self belief is the outcome of fine tuning the mind to soak in and absorb all your talents, your capabilities and your deep resolve to confront your troubles and overcome it. Not giving up is the cusp of self belief. It is also the trigger that helps one convert challenges into success.

Try these:

  1. List out three things that you started enthusiastically but then gave up or something you are keen to attempt but have not yet got around to doing it. Your challenge is to pick up at least one of these tasks and get going within the next one week.
  2. Pick up the leisure page of any daily newspaper and attempt any of the activities like puzzles or crosswords and set yourself a deadline to complete it. Repeat daily till you gain a better proficiency.

No excuses please

18- 02- 14 Jan 18- Quit Making excusesPerhaps you too like many, have made some excellent New Year resolutions. However, like the vast majority, you too could already be feeling the pressure of sticking to the resolutions set. It is quite possible that we have already defaulted on a few already and are feeling a tinge of guilt about it. Our problems stem from our inability to take responsibility and own the challenges that we have set for ourselves. It all starts with us making excuses for any aberration that we are guilty of. We blame circumstances, others around us and occasionally our own ineptitude. We rarely resolve to overcome the circumstances or to ignore those who knowingly or unknowingly derail our plans. Worst of all, we accept our ineptitude as a character flaw that cannot be corrected.

If we simply pay more attention to correcting our personal flaws, the resultant benefits would be mind-boggling. The first step is to stop complaining. Complains are akin to a carpenter blaming his tools instead of working on enhancing his skills. While at times one may face trying circumstances and daunting challenges, these are the times when one has to dig deep into one’s reserves and find that extra something to overcome the challenge.

Worrying, whining and crying are common traits displayed by failures. These are excuses masquerading in varied forms that paralyze an individual from taking some proactive steps.  In reality they do bigger damage in that the individual neither seeks help nor helps himself/ herself and instead they let circumstances dominate their future. Day dreaming is a more pleasurable way of circumventing reality. The pleasure lasts just as long as the dream and then the individual comes crashing down with a real thud. Day dreaming is a passive way to while away one’s time creating an illusion of success to be achieved in the future. Neither success nor the future materialize the way it appears in day dreams.

The way ahead is to be determined, disciplined and dispassionate. Be determined that you are going to achieve your goals / New Year resolution/ targets set. Wake up each morning with the goal in mind. Let the pursuit of the goal never slip out of your mind. Go to bed with thoughts of the progress made towards achieving your goals. Discipline is following the specific steps outlined to attain your goal. No excuses for not following the steps must be your mantra. If required sacrifice other pleasures just to ensure you have the time to follow the steps outlined. To keep nay sayers and critics at bay you need to be dispassionate and not let emotions and fears cloud your goal. Listen to those who have your welfare at heart. Listen to criticism. However, you must learn to ignore what does not suit your plans because only you can visualize the goal and success you have set for yourself.

Try these:

  1. Make a list of the most common excuses you are guilty of making. Your goal is to ensure you eliminate or at least minimize the use of these excuses in the coming days.
  2. Outline three reasons why you have not actively pursued a latent passion. Jot down three action points that will help you pursue your passion starting this coming week. Ensure you don’t use excuses to not begin work on your passion or discontinue it soon after beginning it.
  3. What are the qualities of a person you admire that you will like to adopt? Begin work on imbibing those qualities starting now.
