Expectations are a gift not a burden

It takes a really different perspective, to understand and appreciate, how an expectation becomes a gift and that it is not a burden. Remember the festival times and birthdays, when each of us had some sort of expectations regarding the gifts, we believed we would get. Perhaps in some cases, the expectations still persists, except that the giver of the gift has changed, possibly to that of a spouse, grownup children, a new friend, the in laws etc. On the other hand, do you as an individual, get bogged down by the challenge of fulfilling expectations? It could be as simple as what gift or give someone or it could be more complex as, how do I fulfill the other person’s expectations of me when I myself am not motivated or confident of giving something appropriate?

To understand and appreciate the perspective of expectation being a gift, one needs to appreciate that expectations are always put only on those we have trust in; have faith in; people who we are sure love us a lot and believe in doing the best for us. Expectations arise because we place out trust in someone and that trust is earned because they have given ample evidence of their nature and love for us. It is true that many a time we have been disappointed when our expectations did not match up to what we had in mind. Other times, the expectations remained unfulfilled for a variety of reasons but while the pain of that moment may still be a little sore, we have still largely kept up our expectations in them again. Our expectations are proof of our understanding, appreciation, trust and value we place in the relationship.

If you are someone burdened with the onus of fulfilling expectations, look at those expectations as a testimony to other people looking up to you. This kind of trust is earned over time and reinforces the reality that you have are a person who people look up to, trust whole heartedly and believe. They have expectations from you because in their experience, what you offer in word, deed and gifts are valuable, chosen with care and apt. You have over time given others reason to believe in you. You have listened to them, you have kept them in your thoughts, you have the courage of conviction to give a feedback and you value the relationship with them.

Look at yourself as the Santa Claus that brings good cheer in all ways, at all times to many a people and thereby you have earned trust, respect and the challenge of fulfilling myriad expectations however big or small.

Try these:         

  • Ask yourself if there are people whose email forwards or watts app forwards are looked forward to by you? Can you identify the reasons for it? Is it because they forward you selective, meaningful, apt stuff that you can identify with?
  • Next challenge is for you to be as discreet, selective and discerning in your communications as the person whose communication you value.
  • Who disappointed you the most because he/ she/ they never came even close to fulfilling your expectations from them?  Have you also let down others in a similar way, when they had high expectations from you? What is common to both situations?
  • What was the most wonderful gift you ever received? Ask yourself why the value of that gift is priceless for you?
  • What is the best gift that you have gifted to anyone? What makes you think it is an excellent gift?
  • Is there any gift or surprise that you received that was completely unexpected and thrilling?
  • What was the gift you disliked or disapproved of and rankles you even today? Can you identify the reasons for this feeling of dislike?

Discovering the fountain within you

The empty bucket that we walk around with, can be labeled many things. Excuses are the most common label. Then there are others like bad luck, not good enough, it is very tough, it is not possible for me, there is no one to help me etc. The sad part is that these empty buckets remain empty while ironically, there is within you the fountain of limitless opportunities and potential waiting to be tapped into. The question is how can one identify this fountain and how can one drink deep from this fountain. Surprisingly the question is not too difficult to answer. However, one must be ready to make an effort to find the answer and to then make double that effort to reach into the fountain within you and utilize it well.

Do a personal SWOT – Do an objective evaluation of your personal strengths, weakness, opportunities that you see being available to you and the potential threats or difficulties that can derail your success. If required pay attention to feedback from people who matter, ask mentors or elders who can give you an objective analysis. It is a self diagnosis that can help one pursue the right medicine for personal improvement and development. Surprisingly you will find that all that is required for your well being and happiness in well within you. You will discover new strengths and opportunities and you will also note that the antidote for many of your weakness and imaginary threats are also within you. All you need to do is delve in and find it.

Identify your interests/ passion – This could be in the nature of your non academic interests as well as those subjects that you are good at and also have a passion for. However, while interest could be varied, your passion is what you deeply care about and are willing to sacrifice a lot so as to pursue it. Imagine you being passionate about music but you are unable to pick up musical notes. While your interest and passion are commendable you will have to find innovative ways to ensure you can live your passion fruitfully.  Once again delve in and discover your creativity, your inner strength, undiscovered talents and re-engineer your life with these.

Outline your short term/ medium term / long term goals – These goals must be done for varied aspects of your life. You will then realize that you are already blessed with much and with diligent, focused persistence you can dig deep into the enormous potential that you have which lies untapped. Within you lies the balance that will ensure you limit your desires, be lavish with your gifting and tap into unlimited joy. Your goals are then reduced to being happy and making the world around you happier.

Move out of your comfort zone – For the vast majority, an unwillingness to step out of their comfort zone has made them look at their potential and the opportunities possible like a frog stuck in a well. When you move out of your comfort zone, you will definitely feel a little helpless and concerned but soon you will also discover that the world has much more to offer provided you are willing to take your chances. The fountain within you will gush out when you risk more, discover more and experiment more.

Write down answers to the following questions?

  1. Who is the happiest person you have ever met? List three qualities that the person exhibited that justified your belief.
  2. What is the biggest loss you ever suffered? How long did it take to get over it?
  3. What is the one desire you still crave for? What will happen if you do not get your desire?
  4. What was the most embarrassing/ awkward moment of your life? Do you still feel terrible about it?
  5. What is your greatest weakness from among these three; anger/ jealousy / pride. How has it impacted your life?
  6. Name the three greatest blessings you have received. What is the one blessing you wished you got?

Learn by using the power of your senses

The human race is truly blessed with the unique gift of learning and widening knowledge in a multitude of disciplines. While the plant and animal kingdom learn to adapt and adopt for survival, it is the human species that is bestowed the privilege of a brain that is able to process and imbibe a wide array of subjects not just for survival but also for personal growth and happiness. However, the unfortunate and unintended consequence has been that human beings are focused on academic learning, laying stress on an evaluation method that is not necessarily the best way of assessing knowledge and worse of all focusing on higher learning without any heed to the basic learning that of using the five senses more effectively.

What we need to focus more on, if we need to become better learners is become more aware of the basic five senses that each of us blessed with, from birth. These senses are the first touch points of learning, which is what the primitive man used, long before any formal educational structure was put in place.

Observe not just see – We see so many thing around us but do we pause to observe and examine the finer nuances of the wonders around us. Observe the various species of flora and fauna around us. See how they bloom differently, adapt seamlessly to the environment and attract different types of birds and insects. Take two leaves and observe the subtle differences. On a more personal level, have you observed how people around you respond or react to your presence and mannerisms? You will get valuable insight about yourself by merely observing responses from people you interact with.

Feel don’t merely touch – When we buy clothes from a shop do we not touch the fabric. Are you clear in your mind what you are seeking in the fabric from that touch? When your pet wants you to hug it, does it just want a symbolic hug or does it hope to feel your warmth in the touch? Are you able to convey your feelings through touch? Take a news paper, a glossy magazine, and different types of paper or cloth and feel it with your eyes closed. Take a wad of paper currency of various denominations then close your eyes and feel each note and estimate the value of the currency.

Soak in the aroma don’t just smell – How often do we gobble up our meals at home and at times criticize the food whereas we pay a fancy price at a high end restaurant praising the ambiance, the style of presentation of the food and even spare time to soak in the aroma of the food. Do you not get intrigued by the smell of the first rain on mud? Do we realize how a wonderful aroma can immediately enhance your mood and if the aroma is related to food you even being to salivate.

Enjoy the taste don’t just eat – When we talk about salivating, it is obvious that we are itching to gobble up the food. Perhaps appreciating the aesthetics of the food prepared and served can add even more value to the dining experience. However it is in savoring the food slowly, relishing every morsel and letting the taste buds soaking in the various flavors that makes the meal both wholesome and an exhilarating experience. Try the same with raw mango, tamarind, raw vegetables and you will realize that there is much to be enjoyed in tasting not just eating to satisfy hunger.

Listen don’t just hear – Take a large sea shell and hold the open side close to your ears. You seem to be hearing the roar of the sea. Go to a garden or a beach or a river side and sit silently with the focus only on hearing the various sounds around. Ideally close your eyes and just listen. You will discern sounds that you never realized before. Not just the chirping of the birds but the rustle in the wind, the gurgling sound of flow water in a nearby stream, the waves either gushing or ebbing . Listening helps you connect to the wonders around not to mention it also helps you empathize better with those who communicate with you.

Try these:          

  • Take currency of various denominations and observe the subtle differences. Pay attention to certain markings on it that will help the blind identify the value of the notes by touch.
  • Close your eyes and now try to feel the markings that you may have observed.
  • Ask a friend to get you petals of different flowers / leaves of different plants in a closed box. Blind fold yourself and try to hold each petal and identify the flower based on touch and possibly smell.
  • Get a friend to cut a small piece of vegetable and give it to you to taste and identify the vegetable. Ideally you should have your eyes closed or be blindfolded when tasting.
  • Take a music system play a song and change the various sound settings like bass , treble etc and listen to the difference.
  • Take a deck of cards and notice the subtle differences between the different kings, queens and jacks in the deck. Which king has only one eye in the deck?

I came across this wonderful cartoon,  that puts in perspective what we need to do this coming year, to ensure that by the year end, we can look back with no regrets – simply get ourselves sorted right.

All of us travel with a whole lot of baggage; some inherited, some acquired, a few bestowed and most of it our own creation. As a result we are constantly balancing our imaginary and realistic possessions in the fond hope that they will ensure that we live a worry free life of comfort and happiness. Unfortunately, with each passing day, juggling becomes problematic as we seem to have a penchant for adding to our possessions, keep craving for more and wishing some of our less prized or despised possessions would be taken away. The six sides of the Rubick’s cube give us a clue as to how we can organize our life and attain Nirvana without having to climb the mountain in search of a guru.

Each of the six sides of the cube can be seen as representative of a broad aspect of our life. Our physical well being, our mental/ intelligent growth, our emotional stability, our spiritual/ ethical grounding , our financial security and our social needs. All we need to do is to ensure we sort out each of these aspects of our life so that they, like the colors of each side remain in harmony and pronto the Rubik cube of life is sorted.

A few pointers given below, may perhaps help us get the knack of sorting each aspect of our life more expeditiously and productively.

Physical well being – This is a no brainer. Obviously if we are not in the best physical shape, it is extremely difficult to live a productive life. Eating in moderation, eating healthy and physical exercise are the keystones of physical well being. However,  worry and stress do tend to have an unduly negative impact on physical well being as well. Regular health checkup and the subsequent suggestions of the medical practitioner’s would ensure that your over physical well being is at its best at all times. Those will disabilities and challenges would do well to accept the realities and pace their lives accordingly. This is particularly true for those who unfortunately become victims of such disabilities after leading a perfectly healthy lifestyle.

Mental and Intellectual growth – Reading widely, soaking in new experiences, experimenting, living beyond one’s comfort zone are ways and means of ensuring you continue to growth mentally and intellectually. Get involved in the changes happening around, interact with the young, listen without judging and be open to ideas that seem contrarian to your intellect.

Emotional stability – It is extremely difficult to control our emotions. Too often it is our emotional outbursts that fractures relationships, creates chasms between individuals, contributes to build up prejudices and drains us emotionally. Balance in evaluating any response and responding with a measured response both in choice of words and tone is the key to ensuring we maintain our emotional stability. Beware of issuing threats, ultimatums’, taking extreme positions in arguments; replace it with pragmaticism, reason and common sense.

Spiritual and ethical grounding – While circumstances and upbringing, have a role to play in how we develop our spiritual and ethical values, going to extremes is the cause of tensions within us. One needs to be aware of the ground realities, be accommodation to differences yet remain true to the values one cherishes. Get clarity about your values and your actions will be synchronized leaving no scope for doubts and worries.

Financial security – In a materialistic world, financial security is compulsive reality. You need to provide for your future, your lifetime and for the unexpected. Make a realistic assessment and save accordingly. Take professional help if required. However, let not the future scare you so much that you do not enjoy the present. The challenge is to balance your current utilization and provide for future security. Take those holidays you crave for, indulge in some luxuries that you dream about, experiment with a progressive lifestyle and make your today just as enjoyable as the future you dream off.

Social needs – As a social animal, one cannot live as a hermit or in seclusion. Yet, on one extreme we are connected with all the gadgets and technology and on the other hand the physical interactions seem to be disappearing. Life is always full of beautiful memories which you have to create and make a reality. There is no substitute to meeting, interacting and enjoying life in groups. It could be families together, friends together, travel companions or making connections with strangers. Be there in person; minimize the use of gadgets and you will create magical moments to cherish forever.

Try these:

  1. Just list out one resolution that you will diligently adhere to for each of the above points. Begin Now.
  2. List out 3 of your fondest memories
  • With your parents
  • Your siblings / cousins
  • Your school mates
  • Your college mates
  • Friends you made in your travels

Core life skills

In a world that is constantly changing and evolving, the challenges of coping with the changes and the evolving dynamics, are both stressful and laced with apprehension. Yet what does not change and what helps one remain balanced during testing times, are the core beliefs that we should embrace with faith. It is not just the technology that challenges us but more worrisome is the human dynamics that have been cast asunder; the traditional family values, societal norms and the fragility of the bonds between cultures, regions, religions, beliefs and values.  Yet to retain our sanity and remain equanimous  in the face of changes that tend to overwhelm us, all we need to do is focus and implement the core life skills which are:

Calm, but alert – If you see a duck paddling in the water, you would never notice how frantically it is paddling below the water because above the water it looks exceedingly calm and serene. Similarly, in the wild, observe the docile creatures like deer’s and gazelle’s. They remain calm but constantly look around to be alert to any danger lurking in the thickets. They do not visualize trouble in their mind and get anxious but they do anticipate trouble, as they are aware of predators around. We humans tend to absorb negativity and project it in our outlook instead of taking calculated risks with an inbuilt trigger to help us remain safe.

Relaxed, but ready – Observe the great athletes of the world. They know that they are competing against the best and that the results are quite open ended giving everyone a fair chance to win. Yet when they warm up before the event, they are fairly relaxed, prepped up but calm, anxious perhaps but equally excited because they know that it is crunch time. Their training and self belief have got them thus far, it is just their performance that matters. Winning and losing are par for the course and that is why they prepare well and compete hard. They are always ready for the competition. No tensions, no anxieties, no worries.

Smooth, but sharp –A pin, a needle, a nail have a sharp point but the rest of it is sleek and smooth. A football or basketball too is smooth but only when it has the air that sharpens its contours. A cricket and golf ball gets its sharpness when the exterior is hard but it is the smoothness that allows it to roll well. In life you can be smooth by being empathetic, polite, respectful, committed, loyal and honest. At the same time you need to be sharp by being assertive, determined, confident, courageous and focused.

Humble, but confident– Success must breed humility not arrogance. Failure must be seen as a stepping stone to success. When you get success, there is no virtue more important that being humble to keep your grounded. When failure unexpectedly makes its rounds in your life, believe that they temporary hiccups and be confident that you are well prepared to overcome the setbacks. As they say, a Lion never roars after a kill; it never has to announce his accomplishments. At the same time be aware that a Lion is successful only 17-20% of the time it attempts a kill. Yet it is supremely confident that it can succeed the next time around. Your humility must never be seen as your weakness nor must your confidence morph into arrogance.

  • Which of the above 4 principles best represent your nature? Which principle do you think you will find most difficult to implement and why?

The power within you

The power within you

From childhood, we are taught to respect authority and to seek approval from parents, elders, and authorities before we take any major action. We also look upto them for approval to confirm that we have done a good job. There is logic and wisdom in this method for those older and wiser have greater experience and expertise which comes in handy to guide a novice.  Yet, as the years go by the novice begins to gain experience, wisdom and independent thinking. At times her/his knowledge may far exceed that of his elders. However just as old habits die hard, the need to seek approval remains partly as a mark of respect but chiefly because one hesitates to break the ties and be our own person. Maturity and independence is  translated into power when the  individual takes that giant leap of making her/ his own decisions without any approval of others. It also marks the coming of age of the individual and is a sign of the power each individual holds within.

Here are the steps to realizing and utilizing your real power:

Take responsibility – This is the key to becoming powerful. Unless one takes responsibility for the consequences of a decision / action, it is impossible for a person to be powerful. It is easy to take credit for success but almost impossible to take complete responsibility for failure. The tendency to apportion blame on circumstances, people and bad luck is common place but to own up to the problem is a tad difficult.

Be decisive – A major reason for people not using their full potential and power is their indecision. Sometimes tough decisions have to be taken for the larger good. The tough decisions can have serious consequences for some and great leaders are aware of this yet firmly give their orders. A general in war may have to sacrifice his people for the greater good of winning the war. At other times the same General may have to surrender because he knows his army cannot win and large number of lives from both sides would be lost.  In life we have our own personal wars with simple things like changing a job or giving up on a dream or pursuing a passion that is disapproved by all well wishers.

Look beyond – Your real power is not in what you achieve in the short term but how you go about realizing your big dream. Think big, think beyond the immediate horizon, and visualize the impact you will have on the world around you when you peak. What you do today must help you leap ahead of the completion. That is the way a leader goes up and leaves the rest of the pack behind. Take the pack along as you go but lead the pack with a promise of glory and join them in toasting the success you envisioned and achieved.

Shape it your way – Furrow your own path. Do not imitate. You must carve out your own destiny and shape it the way you have visualized it. It must be different, unique and special for you. This does not mean that you do something no one has done before. It means that you do it the way a music director comes up with a new tune or music arrangement. It must be music to your ears, colorful in your eyes and pleasing to the heart. The world around must also get to feel the same in their lives and heart.

Try these:

  • Think of the three most important decisions in your life that you have taken. What was the outcome? Were you influenced by anyone to take any or all of these decisions? Which was the toughest decision you took and why was it so hard? Which decision do you ever regret and why?
  • What was the most humiliating or painful experience in your life? How did you feel then and how do you feel now? Do you still carry the hurt with you even now? Have you made peace with that episode yet?
  • Take crayons or paint and explore abstract art. E.g. take a piece of paper and fold it in two. Open the paper and on one side at various places put various colors of wet paint. Then fold the paper and randomly rub it in any direction. Open the paper and see the handiwork. Similarly you can experiment using a couple of strings in the paper then folding the paper and drawing out the strings. The quality of the outcome is less important than the experience and variety of art work you manage thereafter.

Don’t Quit but ideally go ahead and DO IT

In a fast paced materialistic world, quick success is what the expectation norm is. Unfortunately this also comes with a downside that people give up too fast when they do not attain what they seek in the short time frames they set for themselves. Society in general, the family unit and the community in particular are equally to blame for pushing people to achieve unrealistic expectations. Higher exam scores, high paying jobs, amassing wealth etc. have become the yardstick to judge success. Gone into the background are qualities like hard work, honest ways, morals and etiquette’s. Perhaps this explains the rising suicides, the increase in psychological/ neurotic illness, spate of violence and rampant intolerance reflected in incidence of road rage, robberies, cyber crimes and off late trolling. The average conscientious citizen then is under tremendous pressure to perform or quit. It takes tremendous courage, will power and self respect to follow ones dreams, passion, goals and to express ones thoughts freely, in the face of constant scrutiny, criticism and unrealistic expectations from others.

I am sharing an Acronym that should be a good guide to help you overcome the feeling of quitting and instead of simply saying a passive Don’t Quit and keep it for another time, become proactive and go on and DO IT  :

Develop – The focus is on finding ways and means to work and bring into fructification various dreams, aspirations, goals that you have set for yourself. Do not let criticism, negativity or failures hamper you from pursuing your ultimate aim. Developing your mind, spirit and work is essential for you to make progress however slow in the right direction. The task may seem ominous, it may begin to sprout doubts in your mind but as long as you plant the seeds of self belief, exude passion and are prepared to roll up your sleeves and work you will develop in body, mind and soul.

Opinions – Form your own opinions and also seek the opinion of those who matter. Consult elders, experts, mentors and those in your circle of positive influence. Each of them will be able to contribute even if it is by way of constructive criticism or pragmatic wisdom or by simple encouragement. Remember they have your welfare in mind. However, also remember that they may not be able to see your vision or feel your passion and so they could be conservative in their thinking and opinions. Ultimately you have to assimilate and then decide the course of action or the corrective course of action to be taken. Focus on Doing it.

Ideas  – You mind might be spinning with ideas. You see opportunity in various forms. At the same time you could also be seeing problems in every opportunity. Remember that the problems are there to make you grounded and realistic but not put to make you pessimistic and faint hearted. At times some ideas seem to be exceptional and you are just itching to get it going. All ideas need to be vetted thoroughly and mulled over and planned. Only then can you begin. Follow the process and Do It.

Thoughts – The crux of success lies in your ability to think positively. Your thoughts must be focused on achieving your plans and goals. Your thoughts must be on finding solutions, overcoming obstacles and managing constraints. This will enable you to come up with alternatives, bring about clarity on how to proceed further and will also reinforce your belief in your plans. Never let the mind falter when you face a crisis. Instead, use the power of you mind it to think differently, to be innovative and to be goal focused. Solutions will present itself . All you need to do then is DO IT.

 Try these:

What are the three things you have kept on hold and not attempted yet. How about drawing up an action plan to DO IT?  Then instead of just saying Don’t Quit but I shall keep it on the back burner now say DO IT and get cracking.

How about attempting something new that you never ever thought of doing?  Maybe learn some new skill or be a wee bit more adventurous with your choice of picnics/ parties / get together. Go on ensure that you DO IT differently the very next opportunity that comes.

Go on and do it

Go on and do it

It has been a while since I wrote this blog, mainly because I was out of town. However after coming back, I was not getting the zest to write and that is when I came across the above quote. Taking an immediate cue I eliminated all the frivolous reasons I had used to justify my inactivity.  The key to keep going, I discovered, was in not letting your mind to trick you into being lethargic, unproductive and indifferent. The steps to keep going are:

Have a motivation – The key to keep going when things are tough, when you are trying to keep yourself from falling down is to focus on the motivation that got you so far. A motivation provides the desire to keep going, to put up with the hardships and ensures that you get closer to your goal mentally. Sports person are a prime example of how motivation enables them to continuously and vigorously keep practicing. The end result will be seen only on the big day. Failure is a possibility but their hard work guarantees them a good performance. So come rain or sunshine, no matter if they feel fit or otherwise they keep at it relentlessly. What is your motivation that drives you?

Eliminate the excuses – A motivation is not enough; the devil is in the excuses that we conjure up to avoid the unavoidable. Perhaps a look back at school days and the numerous excuses we have had for not doing home work or for doing poorly in the exams would give a clue as to how we use a fig leaf to cover ourselves. In the real world the fig leaf would be blown away and so the only way is to be pragmatic and eliminate every excuse that pops up in the mind and prevents us from doing what we have to do. What is your favorite excuse?

Feel the difference – By starting again, you will immediately feel elated that you have crossed the chasm of indifference. As you make progress, however slow, there is a feeling of progress, the thrill of having overcome a hurdle and there is a new enthusiasm that seeps in. In experiencing these changes, one gets invigorated and journey is made lighter. Begin anew with hope. Have you noticed that your attitude and approach is now different?

Relish the accomplishment – Just as the taste of the pudding is in the eating, it is in relishing the accomplishment that one really gets to embrace the efforts put in. Visualize the end product when you begin and that gives you impetus. You make progress and that gives you confidence. Your spirit is reinforced as you notice how your efforts are bearing fruit. Finally you take in the sweetness of the fruit by joyfully taking in the accolades, congratulations and praise. Do you need anything more to be charged up to begin a new foray?

If it excites and scares you…

Like many, I am full of ideas. I get excited at the thought of executing some of my ideas but most times I avoid attempting anything because I am scared that I may fail. When I travel to new destinations I am captivated by the sights be it the mountains, the rivers, the sea or simply the ambiance of the fun, food and locale. Again I am tempted to indulge but often hold back for I am afraid of something going wrong. Far too often we attempt something different because we are left with no choice. It is also possible that we discovered that there is something new, invigorating and exciting about the new things we attempted. The question we need to answer then is ‘ why don’t I proactively try out something new, different, exciting and scary?’

We are lazy – The easiest thing to generate is ideas. The tough part is executing them. So we lie back and think of various possibilities, scenarios, opportunities. However, if we want to make something out of those ideas we need to get up and work towards it. Sheer laziness, casualness and lethargy on our part makes us dreamers not doers. Laziness manifests itself in the most common way called procrastination.  If one can stop making excuses for not doing something one is passionate about, then one can strive and realize one’s passion and dreams.

We create self doubts – One key reason for procrastination is the self doubts we create in our minds. We question our abilities, we see the challenge as overwhelming, we try to find short cuts rather than hit the road running, we try to plug every loop hole that we imagine in our plans etc. Notice that each of these is self created and a convenient way to fool our mind into thinking that we are being prudent, careful and thorough in our approach. Every doubt is just a self created hurdle that delays our start and often leads to inaction.

We are risk averse – An extreme case of self doubt is rationalizing is that we are risk averse. Risk exists every moment of our life. The degree of risk could vary but the reality is that it exists. Yet we place a premium on certain types of risks which is logical because some risks are higher when the nature of the business on hand itself is fraught with risks. The risk trouble doubles when we imagine all sorts of risks plaguing us especially when one is kickstarting something new. It is technically impossible to over all our bases and yet that is precisely what we try to do when we have to plunge into a new activity. The risk of failure is perhaps the biggest risk we fear.

We fear failure – Among the risks we fear, the fear of failure is what haunts us. A simple example is the numerous people who do not attempt public speaking simply because of their fear of failing. Failure they say is the stepping stone to success but apparently no one wants to use stepping stones. Everyone was to jet set to success and that is technically a near impossibility. Success is earned, learned and sustained over time. Many a time failure is nothing but our inability to keep going and giving up on the cusp of redemption. Occasionally failure is our short sightedness in not responding to change but most times failure is imagination taking us on a ride to nowhere.

We limit ourselves by limiting our thinking. – Perhaps the biggest stumbling block to progress for many, is our self limiting thinking. We begin to aim high and then lower the barrel ending up shooting ourselves in the foot. We question our abilities, show poor trust in our judgment, do not dare to leap frog and keep looking over our shoulder instead of seeing the distant horizons. There are opportunities aplenty, there are challenges that we can overcome easily, there is life beyond the ordinary if only we dare to dream big, think differently and  act decisively.

It is time to TRY what EXCITES you and SCARES you… NOW

If you could change your profession or life list out the three alternatives you are most passionate about. How about doing yourself a favor and working on pursuing one of the passions within the next one year.

If you won a million rupees in the lottery what will you do with it? Outline a plan. Share it with a friend and see his/ her reactions ( do not tell them that it is an imaginary exercise you are attempting).

List out the three craziest things you have done in life so far. What was the outcome? What lessons did you learn from it?

Curiosity is a special talent

Curiosity is a special talent

A common lament of most people is that they cannot identify any single ability/ talent that they posses. They blame this limitation for their lack of ambition, focus, drive and inability to make something better of their life. It is equally true that the overwhelming majority of us are not blessed with some extraordinary ability/ talent. Yet just look around and you will find innumerable talented people never making use of their potential and surprisingly a host of very ordinary people make a whooping success of their life. So what explains this dichotomy? It just so happens that those who seemingly possessed nothing possessed a great gift of curiosity. The others neither explored their talents nor were they curious as to how they could use their talents to make something better of themselves. So it is important to understand how someone who is passionately curious can channelize that talent and convert it into a resounding success.

The answer lies in the approach one takes to curiosity and is best explained by two contrasting English proverbs on curiosity.

Curiosity killed the cat. – This implies that one must not be too curious or it could lead to trouble.

Curiosity is the wick in the candle of learning – This encourages one to explore and find out for there is a world out there that is still to be discovered.

Most people keep their curiosity tucked away for fear that it could open up a Pandora’s box. They don’t dare to open up, find out or move out of their comfort zone. They believe that the status quo is what they are destined for and so they remain there; forever. However, it is those who pursue the later approach are the ones who experiment, fail, succeed, discover, study, work on alternatives, keep trying and finally succeed. It is never a lateral progression but a circuitous complex and occasionally crazy way around. What keeps these people going is their insatiable urge to discover, is their self belief and their singular focus on succeeding in their quest.

Urge to discover/find out / explore / try– How many of you have cut an apple other than lengthwise? Cut it horizontally and look at the two halves carefully. You would see a star like pattern. Is this discovery of any use? Nah. However it now helps you see things you never imagined before. You will find out only if you try something different. The apple slicer for example was a result of someone getting very irritated with slicing the apple only to have to the seeds become an irritant and the slices looking uneven.  Now list out all your irritants and think about alternatives to overcome your irritants. You don’t have to be a wizard of scientist to explore and find out ways and means to make your life better.

Self belief – Perhaps you have already dismissed the earlier point as silly/ not for me / how does it help me. Unless you believe that you have the intelligence, the determination and the power to make a difference you will never take on anything challenging. If you learned cycling, swimming or driving you would have never succeeded in the first go. Yet because you believed that you could master it you continued despite failing and acquired the skill. It is the same self belief that you can make things happen, you can change things around for yourself, you can succeed that will enable you to experiment, explore and extract the best of everything around you.

Having focus – This might sound like an oxymoron in the context of curiosity because curiosity is all about exploring without inhibitions. The focus must be on two aspects. One focus on experimenting; this means be unrestrained in diverse areas, be open to varied possibilities and keep challenging the status quo.  The second aspect of focus is in narrowing your attention to the finer details of what implicitly fascinates you in your quest and discovery. If Thomas Edison experimented with a thousand things before he came up with the filament for the light bulb it simply shows the focus he brought into what was his self belief. At the same time the number of patents he holds shows the focus he brought to bear on exploring diverse aspects that triggered his scientific curiosity.

Try these:

  1. Each of you reading it must be exposed to various social media inputs be it wattsapp / facebook/ instagram / twitter etc. Can you recollect the 5 forwards that you received that got you mesmerized because it was so unique/ different / wow in your opinion.
  2. Make a list of personal/ social irritants that constantly annoy you. Can you list out 3 -10 possible solutions for each of those irritants. How about working on making one of them a workable proposition?
  3. In what creative ways would you spend a gift of Rs.1,000?
