Scale down your personal goals

5-scale-down-your-goalThe title of this post may sound ironical, as most times we are urged to have loft goals.  No doubt that it is good to aspire for the stars so that you may at least reach the moon; however if we have goals that are unrealistic then chances are that we get daunted by the task we have set for ourselves, get easily discouraged by visualizing the enormity of it and more often than not we give up easily.  This is invariably what happens when we set a personal goal, which focuses on being better than anyone else rather than making it more personalized and stating that I will be better than what I was yesterday.

You would observe that the goal to be better than what ‘I used to be’ is more personalized, it is more manageable, as we know what areas of our life we need to focus on and improve and most of all we can measure our progress every moment. E.g. we need to get rid of a bad habit. Once we identify that habit and make it our goal to get rid of it, then every time you lapse into it, you become aware of it and try consciously to overcome it.

The earlier example focused on overcoming a negative trait. A positive goal could be even more motivating and the results perhaps equally exhilarating. E.g. Students could have a goal to map out  a study schedule and complete the set task before indulging in their favorite relaxation like seeing TV or going for a weekend gig. Note that the first step though is to map out the schedule, without which, focusing on the goal is near impossible.

Scale down your goals but have lofty dreams. Make the goals become the steps of the ladder that you need to climb to attain those lofty goals. Inbuilt a mechanism to track progress, a motivator to keep going and definitely a penalty to ensure you get back on track if you stray.

Surprise yourself with the tremendous progress you make when you begin; never mind the baby steps; even Usain Bolt began by crawling, tottering and then steadying his walk before he realized he could outrun everyone. All you need to focus is on outrunning yourself !

Try these:

  1. Just list 3- 5 personal changes you want to ensure for yourself before the year end. Follow this up with specifics you will do to ensure you can attain your goal before the year end.
  2. List out how this year you will surprise
  • A friend
  • A family member
  • A neighbor
  • A colleague
  • A stranger
  • Yourself ( set a goal to overcome a fear or do a dare )

Dare, do, win…

02-07-01-17strength-comesWhen a baby learns to take his/ her first step, it is always tentative and for the first few times it will fall down. Yet, it continues to trust its instincts and when he/ she has mastered the art, there is a perceptible sense of achievement and happiness on the child’s face as well as on the faces of the onlookers. We as adults have lost that sense of adventure, we do not trust our instincts and more than anything, we fear failure and so prefer not to attempt something new, different and exciting. Our strengths remain out of sight, undiscovered and we go to our grave clutching our potential.  Perhaps that also explains why we fear death; because suddenly there is so much more to achieve.

Obviously then, the challenge for us is to dare, do and win. Yes you can, if align the following within yourself and begin:

Self belief: Unless you believe you can do something, chances are that you won’t attempt it. Wish self belief comes the thrill of the challenge.  If you do not have self belief you would end to find excuses not to dare. Questions like why should I? What is in it for me? How will it benefit me? May be it is not my cup of tea etc. would constantly keep niggling you.  You would then prefer to ignore the challenge than confront it.

Planning: While self belief will give you an impetus, a motivation to begin, never attempt a challenge like a casual dare. Outlining a plan to succeed is the key to every challenge. It is also the way to ensure that you have clarity about your objective, a clear road map forward and the required resources to achieve success. E.g. If Public Speaking is your fear, simply getting up and blabbering when forced to, may not give you the desired result. You must plan your topic, prepare for it, practice it and then create the opportunity to demonstrate your ability.

Daring: Self belief will give you the motivation, planning will largely insure your success but without daring, you may falter and fail to start. Daring comes from visualizing success, from having confidence that you have planned and prepared well and from the self belief that you will succeed. Sometimes, daring comes from having no alternative. This is typically what happens in a class room presentation, when every student has to overcome his/ her fear of public speaking for there is no alternative. Remember it is the first time that is the hardest.

Focus: Our limitations are accentuated when we lose focus while attempting the challenge. If we let ourselves be distracted by some blips or glitches that we encounter despite the best of planning the chances are we let our confidence slip. Focus on the resources available, delve into your creative inner self and calm your pounding heart to regain your focus. E.g. when learning to drive initially we grip the steering wheel too hard, we tend to view the accelerator, brake and clutch separately thereby stalling the car more often. It is only with some practice that we tend to see that the three have to work in tandem and that we need to relax a bit more when steering. The focus must be even and that happens when one has sufficient practice and then expertise takes over.

Persistence: Remember the time you learned to cycle or swim. Chances are that you fell, scraped yourself when attempting to cycle or when in the pool drank a lot of water or felt yourself drowning. You mastered the art only because a scraped knee or the fear of sinking did not kill your self belief. The same resilience is called into action whenever you dare to do something different, something challenging, something you have never attempted. There is always the possibility that you may not succeed in your first attempt but persistence is what ensures you succeed.

Look back on the thrill of having overcome many a challenge when you followed your creed to dare, do and win.   It is the same thrill that now beckons you; you suddenly discover both your potential and your strength; the happiness that you get is a huge bonus.

Try these:

Make a list of dares / challenges that you would like to attempt. It could be as dramatic as parachuting or conquering a fear of holding a reptile (like a snake) in your hands. Dare, do and win is next.

List out some of your latent desires e.g. writing poetry, having an exhibition of your art work, singing on stage etc. Assuming you have a decent talent in the respective field, take up the challenge to do this year.

The power of self esteem

32-power-of-self-esteemMost of our problems can be attributed to either over confidence or lack of confidence. Our focus today would be on latter issue of lack of confidence, which essential has its roots in our poor self esteem. Self esteem is confidence in one’s own worth and abilities. Our poor self esteem could be an outcome of various negative influences, experiences and / or our own mindset. Constantly being criticized, facing a couple of failures, our inability to take risks, are some of the key influencers that dent self esteem. While we cannot completely erase the past, we certainly can take some proactive steps to ensure that we recognize our self esteem and build up on it to improve, contribute and prosper. The quick three step approach is as follows

Believing you can do it: The important thing here is to first have something to believe in. So it is better you have a clear goal and a plan to achieve it. When we attempt to set goals, the first hurdle we face is questioning ourselves if the goal is worthwhile, doubting our ability to attain it and constantly comparing the goal with other alternatives and / or with our perception of goals set by others. Setting goals that revolve around our passion, our talent, our flair and our motivation is a simple way to make a wish list. Once this wish list is outlined, translate them into goals with a clearly outlined strategy to attain it, being aware of your own efforts that would have to accompany your dreams to turn it into a reality and believing that you have it in you to make it come true. Your belief comes from your willingness to make the sacrifices that invariably precedes the reward, the confidence within you that you will take it to its logical conclusion and the drive and motivation within you to make it happen.

Believing you deserve it: While you may have a clear goal, an inner urge to push yourself to attain the goal and a very strong desire and motivation, what can possibly play spoil sport is your reluctance to acknowledge that you deserve the success you are aiming for. It is the belief that you are just as deserving as the next person to dream big and reach for the stars that sets apart the winners from the also ran’s. Every start up is based on this one key principle that you are as capable of coming up with a winner as the existing or future competitor. Every employee who believes that he deserves better is the one who makes the upward move either laterally or within the same organization. A realistic personal SWOT analysis would be a good spring board to launch your future, for that is when you put your beliefs to the test.

Believing you’ll get it: The initial period when you dare is often fraught with risk and confusion. Every small set back would dent your confidence and you begin to doubt if you will get what you crave. Almost everyone rushes in with enthusiasm but the sheer effort that is required to keep the momentum going is herculean and that is when one begins to falter. It is only the belief that you will attain what you have planned no matter what the cost, no matter what price you have to pay, that will energize you to keep going. A blind belief would not me of much use, but belief backed by appropriate action is the key. The belief that you will get it must appropriate trigger action and soon the near impossible begins to happen to us. Your belief is like the recharge in your mobile phone; every recharge boosts its ability to deliver each day.

Believe that you can do it; believe that you deserve it; believe that you will get it !

8 - Refocus and get clarity

Clarity of thought is a quality that is essential for every individual so that he /she can progress forward in the right direction. Unfortunately for a variety of reasons, individuals have always grappled with the problem of confusion, an inability to be decisive and worse of constantly looking back and wondering if they chose their path wisely. Most of our lives we have been told to avoid problems. In school one is taught to solve problems. Most of our adult life we are anticipating problems and seeking ways to avoid it. As a result the problem overwhelms us, we are hell bent on avoiding or solving problems and we are apprehensive of moving away from the beaten path lest we encounter problems that we have never experienced. So instead of exploring and discovering we prefer to gingerly and tentatively traverse on known paths occasionally daring to venture into some shallow waters. Our horizons are limited our growth is stunted and our sense of achievement is scaled down.

Today the startups, the youngsters having dreams of alternative professions and those leapfrogging from staid professions to dynamic alternatives are tribute to mind set change from problem avoidance to solution finding. Our training of being defensive and risk averse has actually prepared us to easily reorient our thinking into seeking problems and finding solutions. Instead of letting your mind constantly worry about the problem, let it now dwell in anticipation of finding alternative solutions. With this changed orientation in our thinking we allow our creative self to take over. Problems are merely irritants, solutions are there to be found and in finding the solutions you discover your potential, create something unique and possibly even build a new paradigm of success for yourself. Man’s inability to fly was a problem since evolution. Those who saw it as a problem and did nothing about it rationalized that we really didn’t need to fly and so came up with alternative means of transportation. The Wright brothers on the other hand viewed the inability to fly as a problem deserving an appropriate solution. Their aircraft crude as it may have been pioneered the aircraft industry later. The hot air balloon and the drones are also examples of how solution centric answers can become very effective.

We need to watch out for three impediments that could take away our focus from being solution centric

Fear of the problem – It is true that every problem comes with its share of anxiety. When we let this anxiety overtake our rationality we remain problem centric. Our anxiety increases with the passing of time and no acceptable solution visible on the horizon. On the other hand if we analyze the problem dispassionately, we would be able to appreciate the varied dimensions of the problem and perhaps even see various alternative solutions peeping from some corners. Pick up a newspaper and try to solve the crosswords or Sudoku problem in it.

Distraction due to anxietyBefore you attempt the above keep a personal time limit to solve the problem. Notice how you get more tense, distracted and frustrated that the time is running out. Your attention is now drawn towards the deadline rather than the problem itself. This distraction will take away your concentration. On the other hand if you focus on finding solutions you will get at least some answers by the time the deadline approaches.

Urge to disown the problem – Very often we just want to somehow get rid of the problem. If possible we try to pass it on to others. If not we try to find excuses for the problem still being there. Very often we try to find someone to blame for the problem. This urge to get rid of the problem, to disown the problem, to pass the buck is our way of escapism. It neither helps in getting a solution nor does it ease our anxiety for the problem persists.

Watch out for the above and immediately change your thinking to finding a solution and keep seeking alternate solutions till you have ample alternatives to choose the best one. Yes problems often come with many many solutions. Keep searching for the best one.

Start today and have no regrets later

25- 21 Dec 14-A year from nowWhen December comes, we subconsciously review the year gone by and hope against hope that the New Year has better tidings for us. The fact is that each one of is solely responsible for the progress we make in our life, notwithstanding events and circumstances beyond one’s control that occasionally crop up and derail even the best of plans. December is also the time when many of us make resolutions for the New Year, most of it never written down. When next December comes we regret the opportunities gone by, the noble intentions never executed and keep fervently wishing we could turn the clock back. Alas, a year would have passed by then; and we continue to rue.

This is an opportune moment to make plans, commit to them and execute them so that next year around this time, you would have achieved much more than you ever expected to. However it is also important to realize that this is the best time to also move beyond the conventional listing that most people do and instead list out personal priorities related to your interests, passions, hobbies and yearnings. So this is the perfect time to get going on ensuring you attain your happiness quotient by deft planning and execution.

The most important ritual that one has to necessarily follow before outlining one’s plans for the future is to spend enough time ‘thinking’ about what one wants to achieve. Thinking must be deliberate, reasoned, clearly visualized and actionable milestones identified. The milestone’s will be critical to motivate you to act even if the results don’t seem too encouraging to begin with. E.g. those who plan to run a marathon or plan to lose weight would initially find the going very tough, but strict self discipline would definitely show results. Thinking also ensures that we don’t operate out of a whim or fancy but it is a conscious choice made. This makes us more committed to the activity we have chosen.

In preparing for the future, ensure that there is ample time allotted to personal passions, interests and yearnings. Life is not about just hard work towards a materialistic goal; rather life must be lived with panache, verve and fulfillment. These aspects are individualistic, self determined and uniquely experienced; provide for it in your plans so that you never regret not venturing into it. More than anything else, what we plan must be written down and only then can one periodically review progress made and corrective action initiated. When we are disappointed that we have not done anything substantial or failed to even begin something we have no one but ourselves to blame. As is said ‘ well begun is half done’ so begin well by writing down your resolutions and taking courage to begin and being self disciplined to keep going.

Next year this time, smile at the results; pat yourself on your back for the progress made and don’t forget to once again start anew !

  1. Decide to give up one bad habit that you have in the coming year.
  2. Focus on 3 things you always wanted to do but never did till date. Ensure that in the coming year you do at least one of these activities that you have listed.
  3. Choose one of the following or decide on something special for yourself to be done in the coming year
  • Preparing a PPT on your life in 25 slides and using a maximum of 50 photographs
  • Volunteering for a completely off beat social service activity e.g volunteering at prisons
  • Throwing a surprise party for some one of your choice.
  • Attempting something that no one ever expected you to do e.g. keeping a pet / bungee jumping/ writing your personal blog etc.

Three ways to harness your energy

Your energy

The next time your attention is caught by a young toddler who is a handful for those in whose care he/ she is, notice that the toddler is full of raw energy. You too have grown up displaying similarly energy and zest only to be shackled over the years by chains of negative thoughts, self doubts, fear, lack of confidence and in many cases the festering wounds of failure, rebuke, criticism and in some cases rejection.

As long as you have life, you are a potent force of limitless energy; but you can use it profitably only if you light it up with your own initiative, daring and imagination. The energy is the same in each one of us but it is harnessed differently by different people at different times. The stoic zen master or yoga guru uses his/ her energy differently from the way a WWF wrestler or boxer would use it. The saying ‘the pen is mightier than the sword’ is an acknowledgement that raw energy can be harnessed and channeled to be potent and effective.

To channelize your energy and harness it effectively, in a simple and practical manner, you need to be aware of the following:

Your thoughts begin it: Every single invention/ discovery / theory/ activity begins first as a thought; be it an idea/ a dream/ an obsession/ a desire or simply the urge to do something. Pause and reflect on the numerous thoughts going through your mind at this precise moment. Some of you be appreciative of the reading so far and would be energized to read further. There could be others who find it interesting but have other thoughts overriding their urge to read. There could be others wanting to bookmark the page for latter reading or some others wanting to become a subscriber of the blog. Irrespective of what your thoughts are, your energies will point you to the direction you have to or want to go.

Your emotions amplify it: While thoughts act like the ignition that starts the vehicle, it is your emotions that give you the direction and trigger the reflex action to engage gears and grip the steering wheel of your life so as to begin your journey towards your goal. Unfortunately, many of us mimic our childlike behavior when left unattended in a car. We sit on the driver’s seat and mimic the actions of a driver, pretending to use the steering and emitting the noise of an engine in an overdrive. We expend our energies in pretending to drive but remain stationary. It is therefore essential that we let positive / proactive / actionable emotions come naturally to us. Visualize possibilities/ success/ passion engulfing your thoughts and ideas and your will naturally be motivated to take steps to translate your thoughts in success.

Your actions give it the desired momentum: Now that you have started the ignition and your emotions have energized you towards your goal, you need to act. Action is the acceleration that is essential to gain momentum and is the most potent form of your energy. If you have read this far, it is not an accident but a conscious decision to act that began with the thought to read it, the positive emotion that the contents will be beneficial and your action to focus on the reading despite numerous other tempting options. ( For me too it was difficult to give up seeing the IPL and the EPL but then I knew my post was long overdue). So you would have noticed that both you and I can use our energy productively and the best part is that that is we have an endless supply of energy within us.

Try this

  1. Write down the 5 most important things you need to achieve by the month end/ year end. Jot down 2 key activities that you have to do to achieve each of these goals. E.g. You want to buy a new home. Key things could be speaking to a bank to know loan amount you can get and identify a good real estate broker.
  2. All of us want to increase our savings. There are two ways to do it. Increase your income or reduce your expenses. You have to identify 2 ways to increase your income and 3 ways to decrease your expenses. Remember to have a target in mind for the savings you hope to increase by acting on your plans.
  3. Which of these positive qualities do you posses which you can harness effectively. ( you can add / identify other qualities not listed below)
  • Determination
  • Optimism
  • Daring
  • Faith
  • Focus
  • Calmness
  • Creativity

Life is fun if you can find a purpose and passion

WP-3--Purpose is the reason...

Look around and identify those people who seem lackluster, disillusioned and despondent. The one common thread in their life that significantly contributes to this state of living is the lack of purpose in their life and their inability to find a passion to motivate them. It is possible that at times each of us too has gone through the misery of facing a bleak and dreary day, week, month or at times a much longer period. So how does purpose and passion influence us? Is there a way to find our purpose and passion? How can I make best use of the purpose and passion that I identify? Answers to these three questions form the crux of today’s post.

So how does purpose and passion influence us?

Without a purpose, there is no worthwhile goal that we can pursue. It is the purpose that gives us a direction, a road map to the future and a reason to strive. The purpose in the short term could keep changing but it would be by and large be in sync with the larger purpose we have for our life mission. E.g. The purpose of going to school would initial start of as learning to read and write. As we progress the purpose would change to learning a wide variety of subjects. It could further change to getting degree. It could then change to being a stepping stone to a career. The larger purpose though could also change over time but it would be the outcome of thinking and reflection and would not change color as often as our short term purpose. E.g. I want to be a successful person. At some point this could change to I want to be a change agent in society or I hope to make a difference to the environment around or I just want to be a diligent, upright and respected citizen.

The passion is the fire in your belly that helps you peruse relentlessly the purpose set out. Without passion, you would lack the motivation, the commitment, the inspiration and zest to meet the challenges that are bound to crop up as you journey through life. Your passion makes the journey more endurable, the challenges more manageable and the goal more covetable.

Is there a way to find our purpose and passion?

Finding a purpose and passion in life is like finding the holy grail of life. It exists but it is incognito, it appears but fades quickly and it beckons seductively only to teasingly remain elusive. Yet it is possible for one to decipher it by focused attention and imaginative analysis. Focus on areas of interests, activities that excite you, areas in which you excel, aspects of life that engage your mind more often, arenas that capture your imagination. Be aware also of those topics, subjects, activities that you are most naturally drawn to or those about which you read more intensely or those that you have a natural flair for or skills that you are complimented for. Obviously there would be varied topics, subjects and activities that would vie for your attention at different times. Yet there would be a couple of areas that engage you much more than the others. Your purpose and passion are hidden in this little maze. With experience and maturity, fresh ideas, new thoughts and a changing world view would deeply influence and possibly alter your purpose and passion. E.g. Your passion could be photography and you find a purpose in documenting through photography wild life or news. Once you have achieved a measure of success and professionalism, your purpose could shift to sharing your expertise with others and your passion could change to being a teacher of the subject.

How can I make best use of the purpose and passion that I identify?

Learn with intensity – This is a lifelong purpose. While the subject experts and the text books will add tremendous value there is no substitute for experiential learning. Learn by using all the senses.

Explore with daring – The best experience is got when one moves out of the comfort zone and ventures into unknown territory  all the time being aware of the risk but not being foolhardy.

Temper your purpose and passion – Expertise and success could be dizzying and tempt one to feel almost invincible and that is what one needs to be cautious about and avoid falling into the trap of being reckless or foolish.

Enjoy the process – There will always be challenges, doubts, frustrations and criticism along the way; but that should not let you not enjoy the larger process of pursing your purpose with passion.

Share whole heartedly– Whatever you achieve or any success you attain must be shared; this need be in monetary terms alone but also in terms of sharing the learning, encouraging others, disseminating information and being a friend philosopher and guide to those who are struggling along the way.

Identify one childhood passion/ dream that is not yet fulfilled. Over the next one month prepare a scrap book or PPT that will be testimony to others about how passionate you were about that dream.

  • You are passionate about dogs
  • You love to gorge on Chinese cuisine
  • Your favorite color is blue
  • You love long treks and hikes

How do you see yourself ?

Take a pen and paper and write down five positive adjectives that best describe you. Did you have difficulty in writing it? Now can you list out at least 2 negative adjectives that reflect an aberration in your personality? If you can immediately list our more than 2 negative traits it could possibly indicate a that you have an anxiety about yourself. The good news though is that almost everyone would have experienced this in varying degrees. Successful people have developed the art of focusing on the positives and thereby taking proactive steps to attaining those. The challenge for us then is to reorient our way of thinking and then achieve the success we seek.

It may not be apparent, but for sure every individual has it in him or her, the ability to exceed their own expectations. Let us begin by checking out a couple of well know achievers whose initial failures in academics should have been reason enough to make them give up their dreams.  Winston Churchill wasn’t exactly known for his academic prowess, yet his is amongst the first name that comes up when talking about the world war years. David Attenborough, the celebrated naturalist once addressed a graduating class with a specific speech directed at the failures of the class for he said he could identify with them as he was amongst the academic failures in his school days. On the other end of the spectrum, toppers in academics are by and large expected to be a success in their chosen field of endeavor. So it is not too surprising that Dr.Abdul Kalam became a leading scientist. Yet it was not his professional achievements that were as instrumental in his elevation as President of India as much as it was his own personal integrity and standards coupled with his visionary ways. In recent years, he remains one of India’s best loved public figures.

Many of us would shrug our shoulders at the thought of emulating these respected personalities. What is important though to note, is that each of them was just as human as each of us and for sure they did not ever visualize the sort of success they achieved. What we need to emulate, is the kind of self belief they demonstrated in their daily life, the focus and dedication with which they set about their tasks and the subsequent accolades and achievements were a logical by product of a wholesome personality. To make the best of our strength, abilities, talents and intelligence would be the most succinct way of giving expression to the enormous potential within us.

Pause for a moment and ask yourself if you are doing what you want to do or are pursuing goals largely set by others be it parents, friends, the society around us etc. Social and economic pressures would have a bearing on the choices you make but the biggest mistake one makes is to give up on a passion or goal merely because you let yourself believe that you lacked the ability. It is equally possible that you have not given up on your dreams but merely kept it on the back burner for the opportune moment. What is important to bear in mind here is that you would have to create that opportune moment and not merely have a wistful longing that may never materialize. Finally failure is a very realistic and possible outcome when one embarks on a mission. Use the lessons from the failures to rethink your strategies, rework the plans and remodel the execution without ever changing the goal.

Go look in the mirror now and appreciate the person looking back!

What is stopping you ?

Like many of you reading this post, I have had a number of dreams, aspirations and expectations, a few of which I did achieve. Unfortunately, I must also confess that I just haven’t managed to realize the vast majority of my plans and worse still, have made all sorts of convenient excuses to rationalize my inability to perform to my potential. At the end of the day no one is interested in excuses; the world recognizes only performances not promises. So then I asked myself ‘Hey dude what is stopping you?’ Here is what I found out …(Notice the point in red refers to the problem and the one in blue is the antidote for it.)

Lack of focus – Perhaps this is the one single most important reason that many of us don’t utilize our talents, stumble along life’s way and remain incognito most of our life. We have no idea of what we want to do with our life, we do not have a clear agenda for ourself and merely lurch from day to day hoping that each day will be better than the previous.

Goal setting – We have some haze idea as to what we want from life. However to be focused in life we have to make that effort to actually ask and answer the 5W’s and 1H that pertain to our own life. One has to write down one’s goals be it personal goals, academic goals, professional goals or social goals. Ask any Olympic participant and you will find one thing in common- each of them had a goal to represent their country in the Olympics

Over commitment – In our anxiety to make up for our lack of focus and experience a sense of achievement, we make the next cardinal mistake of attempting more than what we realistically can attempt successfully. We also end up being over-committed because we want to please as many people as we can and also because subconsciously we hope that we will strike it rich by having more options. What we don’t seem to realize is that all we end up doing is biting of more than what we can chew.

Learning to say NO – If one has a goal, life is a lot simpler for there is clarity of purpose. Yet we are often thrust with tasks that we do not want to do, are not capable of doing or which is just not your business. Refusing to do something is not looked upon kindly but if our goal is clear and the tasks not aligned to our personal goals it is best that one take courage to say a polite NO and get on with the tasks that take you closer to your end goal..

Surrendering to problems – Every excuse one makes is nothing but the articulation of a problem. Problems come in all shapes and sizes and we often end up seeing a problem as insurmountable either because we do not want to make the effort to find a solution or because we have psyched ourselves into making a mountain out of a mole hill.

Finding creative Solutions – Problems exist because someone has yet to find a solution. Why not have an attitude that the solution can be provided by ME? Get through the problem, under the problem, around the problem or over the problem but ensure the problem is suitably addressed. Also make it a habit never to give excuses and suddenly the problem is no longer a burden to be carried but a present to be unwrapped.

Sheer laziness – Ah I bet each one of us is seriously guilty of this. No amount of explanation can substitute for condoning this.

Penalize yourself – The system will penalize us for our laziness. The marks one got in academics in large measure reflected the effort one put in. Similarly the lack of success experienced can be seen as a penalty imposed by life especially when one has been tardy, casual and indifferent to the opportunities made available. Imposing an additional penalty on ourselves would be the best way to beat laziness.

Now when I reflect on the question ‘what is stopping you?’ the answer is loud and clear…NOTHINGit is simply ME not measuring up to myself.

Action Points:

  1. Play an indoor game like caroms or throw darts on a dart board to appreciate the importance of focus. Every time you miss your target, examine your response to it; are you blaming something or someone or do you refocus quickly with a better strategy?
  2. You are at a party and though playing a game of tambola or housie was planned as the last game, the housie board and tickets have been misplaced. The 50 odd revelers are badgering you to play the game. How will you come up with an innovative housie game that does not use the housie board nor the use of housie tickets. You can assume you have any other resource being at your disposal. Clue: You have sufficient stock of pen and paper

Tips to identify your passion…

With rare exceptions for the vast majority of people finding ones passion is a challenge. Part of the problem stems from the fact that during our formative years we seem to flirt with various interests and likings and over time we grow out of our obsession with many of these. The other problem is that ironically,  almost always what we are truly interested in, invariably does not guarantee financial security nor opens up possibilities of good career prospects and if they are unconventional interest they would never meet parental approval or find favor with our well wishers. Confusion, dilemma and indecision are three emotions that overwhelm us and douse the lingering spark of passion if any. Thereafter we become robotic, controlled by what we loosely term as fate, destiny and convention. The fact though is that our passion tugs at our heart strings but we plead haplessness and go on with the business of life less enthused, more frustrated and definitely dissatisfied.

Is it possible to somehow identify ones passion by cutting through the clutter in our mind, by pinpointing what can truly become our real interest and which can motivate, enthuse and propel our life? For those still searching for his/ her passion here are a few pointers to locate that elusive North Star in one’s own heart and mind.

What gets you all excited?  Yes movies, parties, gossip, lazing around, sports, holidays etc would top the list. It would help though if this list also contains a list of at least one or two subjects that you studied in school days or maybe in college to ensure that all those years of education are not considered wasted. Now add a list of alternative career choices that you always fancied. So now you have a wide variety of stuff that gets you excited.

What is that you never get bored of? What is it that will get you of the couch and sweat it out because you can’t resist it? Topping the list will be talking on phone, gossiping, texting, surfing the net, eating, sleeping etc. Now widen the list by adding those activities that got a lot of approval from family, friends, peers and even perhaps some of those who are jealous of you. Lengthen the list by adding a wish list of career choices that you fancied.

Do you have the aptitude and attitude to make your interest your life goal? Perhaps a close hard look at the choices you have listed earlier by holding it up against the mirror of your personality that reflects your aptitude and attitude will enable you to clear see some choices emerging as truly something that you really love and are passionate about.

Would you be thrilled doing what you are doing even if you were to die a pauper, unrecognized and perhaps ostracized by society too? The final test is in making choices and seeing it against the light of the reality check.  The reality check is simple; see if your passion surfaces even if you have no one to support you, even if there are lots of doubting Thomas’s who attempt to dissuade you. Are you so excited about what you want to do that you are willing to risk failure, prepared to battle single handed and are sure that your enthusiasm will neither wane nor your spirit weakened because you are doing what you really want to do.

The real test though is to tweak your passion to ensure you come closest to enjoying what you do. This is essential because only the exceptionally lucky person gets to pursue his/ her own passion in it is original form.  Eg. You might want to be a filmy hero but if you are not really talented perhaps you can still find a niche space in the industry that enables you pursue your interest in films.
