The power of self esteem

32-power-of-self-esteemMost of our problems can be attributed to either over confidence or lack of confidence. Our focus today would be on latter issue of lack of confidence, which essential has its roots in our poor self esteem. Self esteem is confidence in one’s own worth and abilities. Our poor self esteem could be an outcome of various negative influences, experiences and / or our own mindset. Constantly being criticized, facing a couple of failures, our inability to take risks, are some of the key influencers that dent self esteem. While we cannot completely erase the past, we certainly can take some proactive steps to ensure that we recognize our self esteem and build up on it to improve, contribute and prosper. The quick three step approach is as follows

Believing you can do it: The important thing here is to first have something to believe in. So it is better you have a clear goal and a plan to achieve it. When we attempt to set goals, the first hurdle we face is questioning ourselves if the goal is worthwhile, doubting our ability to attain it and constantly comparing the goal with other alternatives and / or with our perception of goals set by others. Setting goals that revolve around our passion, our talent, our flair and our motivation is a simple way to make a wish list. Once this wish list is outlined, translate them into goals with a clearly outlined strategy to attain it, being aware of your own efforts that would have to accompany your dreams to turn it into a reality and believing that you have it in you to make it come true. Your belief comes from your willingness to make the sacrifices that invariably precedes the reward, the confidence within you that you will take it to its logical conclusion and the drive and motivation within you to make it happen.

Believing you deserve it: While you may have a clear goal, an inner urge to push yourself to attain the goal and a very strong desire and motivation, what can possibly play spoil sport is your reluctance to acknowledge that you deserve the success you are aiming for. It is the belief that you are just as deserving as the next person to dream big and reach for the stars that sets apart the winners from the also ran’s. Every start up is based on this one key principle that you are as capable of coming up with a winner as the existing or future competitor. Every employee who believes that he deserves better is the one who makes the upward move either laterally or within the same organization. A realistic personal SWOT analysis would be a good spring board to launch your future, for that is when you put your beliefs to the test.

Believing you’ll get it: The initial period when you dare is often fraught with risk and confusion. Every small set back would dent your confidence and you begin to doubt if you will get what you crave. Almost everyone rushes in with enthusiasm but the sheer effort that is required to keep the momentum going is herculean and that is when one begins to falter. It is only the belief that you will attain what you have planned no matter what the cost, no matter what price you have to pay, that will energize you to keep going. A blind belief would not me of much use, but belief backed by appropriate action is the key. The belief that you will get it must appropriate trigger action and soon the near impossible begins to happen to us. Your belief is like the recharge in your mobile phone; every recharge boosts its ability to deliver each day.

Believe that you can do it; believe that you deserve it; believe that you will get it !

8 - Refocus and get clarity

Clarity of thought is a quality that is essential for every individual so that he /she can progress forward in the right direction. Unfortunately for a variety of reasons, individuals have always grappled with the problem of confusion, an inability to be decisive and worse of constantly looking back and wondering if they chose their path wisely. Most of our lives we have been told to avoid problems. In school one is taught to solve problems. Most of our adult life we are anticipating problems and seeking ways to avoid it. As a result the problem overwhelms us, we are hell bent on avoiding or solving problems and we are apprehensive of moving away from the beaten path lest we encounter problems that we have never experienced. So instead of exploring and discovering we prefer to gingerly and tentatively traverse on known paths occasionally daring to venture into some shallow waters. Our horizons are limited our growth is stunted and our sense of achievement is scaled down.

Today the startups, the youngsters having dreams of alternative professions and those leapfrogging from staid professions to dynamic alternatives are tribute to mind set change from problem avoidance to solution finding. Our training of being defensive and risk averse has actually prepared us to easily reorient our thinking into seeking problems and finding solutions. Instead of letting your mind constantly worry about the problem, let it now dwell in anticipation of finding alternative solutions. With this changed orientation in our thinking we allow our creative self to take over. Problems are merely irritants, solutions are there to be found and in finding the solutions you discover your potential, create something unique and possibly even build a new paradigm of success for yourself. Man’s inability to fly was a problem since evolution. Those who saw it as a problem and did nothing about it rationalized that we really didn’t need to fly and so came up with alternative means of transportation. The Wright brothers on the other hand viewed the inability to fly as a problem deserving an appropriate solution. Their aircraft crude as it may have been pioneered the aircraft industry later. The hot air balloon and the drones are also examples of how solution centric answers can become very effective.

We need to watch out for three impediments that could take away our focus from being solution centric

Fear of the problem – It is true that every problem comes with its share of anxiety. When we let this anxiety overtake our rationality we remain problem centric. Our anxiety increases with the passing of time and no acceptable solution visible on the horizon. On the other hand if we analyze the problem dispassionately, we would be able to appreciate the varied dimensions of the problem and perhaps even see various alternative solutions peeping from some corners. Pick up a newspaper and try to solve the crosswords or Sudoku problem in it.

Distraction due to anxietyBefore you attempt the above keep a personal time limit to solve the problem. Notice how you get more tense, distracted and frustrated that the time is running out. Your attention is now drawn towards the deadline rather than the problem itself. This distraction will take away your concentration. On the other hand if you focus on finding solutions you will get at least some answers by the time the deadline approaches.

Urge to disown the problem – Very often we just want to somehow get rid of the problem. If possible we try to pass it on to others. If not we try to find excuses for the problem still being there. Very often we try to find someone to blame for the problem. This urge to get rid of the problem, to disown the problem, to pass the buck is our way of escapism. It neither helps in getting a solution nor does it ease our anxiety for the problem persists.

Watch out for the above and immediately change your thinking to finding a solution and keep seeking alternate solutions till you have ample alternatives to choose the best one. Yes problems often come with many many solutions. Keep searching for the best one.

17-5 July 15 -Stubborn Goals and Flexible methodsThe constant challenge in life, is to sift options and zoom in on what one desires. This is because change is the only constant in life and change always redefines the future. When the future is being constantly redefined, every individual is required to make course corrections. However a course correction does not mean we need to change our destination but merely the route map and mode of getting there. Of course dramatic and major changes may require one to change the goals but even then the alternative chosen would be equally important and challenging. What does not change, is the desire to reach our goal. Success and achievement in life therefore hinge on how well you choose your goal, map out your way and stick to your plans. Here is a road map to success.

Choosing the right goal Right from school days when we have to choose the optional subjects, moving on to choosing the career path and later life goals in the chosen path we are constantly having do decide our goals. Most of the time we are confused, other times we realize our goals are beyond our capability or passion and then we have to revise our goals.

Deciding on a plan of action If selecting a goal is challenging, choosing the plan of action is relatively simple since the goal is clear. What is important is to think thorough the plans, being clear about the assumptions and also outlining the alternative plan/s. Backup plans are vital for they provide a quick alternative should our original plans get derailed. However, there is a real danger that we can get dogmatic and fixated about our original plan and approach. This could create problems if one does not factor in the numerous changes that come about, because of the dynamic environment around.

Reviewing the progress A plan of action is only as good as the progress one makes using it. It is imperative therefore that one constantly reviews how one is progressing and make adjustments for the deviations if any. All plans must have milestones and timelines and wherever possible assumptions based on which the milestones and timelines have been set. These will provide the yardstick for reviewing the progress.

Revising the plans – This is extremely difficult because we have to first acknowledge that we have slipped on our plans. Secondly it could also suggest that our plans were not well thought out. Thirdly it could imply we have to relook our personal competence and commitment as also keep us wondering if our goals are too ambitious or if we have the capability to execute our plans and realize the goals. Despite these self doubts and apparent set back, we have to look at revision of plans as a necessary detour to get back on track.

Continuing the journey – Whether we continue with our original plans or move on with the revised plans, what is important is to keep moving on. Sometimes we are bogged down by frustration, the slow progress, our inability to cope with pressures and setbacks; these are times when we are tempted to give up and stop. Focused and well directed efforts are never wasted but the progress and results may not always be visible. Faith is what will sustain and help one to push ahead no matter what the constraints.

Enjoying the success Since success will eventually come to those who believe in their dreams and goals, it essential that one learns to relish and enjoy success. Many a time, even when we reach the destination we are reluctant to appreciate and recognize that we have pursued and attained out goal. This is partly because along the way, we have lost hope or because we undervalue our success by comparing it with the achievements of others or because we have reset our goals to much bigger and loftier ones. While resetting goals, especially aiming for loftier goals is commendable, not valuing achievements would be like eating bland food for mere sustenance.

Try these:

  1. Go back and review your New Year Resolutions. How far have you succeeded? It is half way through the year and have you a list of things which you have not even started work on? Is it because you didn’t write down the action plan to achieve them?
  2. Choose one of the following as your major area of concern and write down the goal you hope to achieve this year so as to minimize your concern. Also outline the road map with timelines to help you attain it. If you already have a plan review it and make changes if needed to speed up the process of attaining your goal.
  • Improving your finances / savings
  • Bringing about a better work –life balance
  • Adopting a healthier lifestyle.
  • Attaining a significant professional / academic growth
  • Improving and strengthening your current family relationships
  • Working out an overseas holiday trip with family.

Excuses Gone… Results GOT

15-20 Jun 15-Excuses gone results gotFrom early childhood, most of us have unconsciously adopted the undesirable trait of making excuses to rationalize non performance. It begins with us making excuses for our poor handwriting, our inability to meet deadlines or stick to our schedules, not doing homework etc. Later it manifests in us having various regrets be it in our academic performance, tardy work output, out inability to meet targets and deadlines and our constant rebuttal of any criticism directed at us. Unfortunately, in a highly competitive world, all that matters is results and no excuse is ever good enough for not meeting the expectations set. So achieving results is simply a matter of eliminating excuses.

Here are some tips to overcome our tendency to create excuses to rationalize non performance.

1 Have goals – The major difference between successful people and those who are not successful is the goal focused approach of the former set of people. When goals are set, one can direct one’s energies to focus on the goal. When the end objective is clear, we would always finds ways and means of overcoming all obstacles on the way. More importantly goals give a purpose, a direction and meaning to our life. A student who targets a certain rank or percentage in the exams knows that he/ she can attain it only if the studies are planned, prepared and diligently adhered too. Similarly, someone who has set his/ her eyes on a specific career choice would also then chart out the progress systematically, get appropriate inputs and suggestions and pursue the goal with passion.

2.Inbuilt motivation – A goal helps one to see the and aim for something specific. However, very often the goal is at a distance, the efforts required herculean, the obstacles along the way challenging and we are prone to give up and make excuses to justify our stand. Hence it is essential that we have some strong compelling motivation to keep us going even when our spirits are drooping, our physical energies failing and our mind wavering. A good motivation is the perfect antidote for our tendency to make excuses. Have you noticed that when one is eagerly looking forward to something pleasurable like going for a picnic, an holiday or even to see a movie we would find a way to overcome any obstacle that crops up for we are deeply to motivated to attain that goal.

3. Avoid giving in to temptation – Perhaps the single most common excuse comes from the fact that we succumb to the temptation to chase pleasurable alternatives rather than focus on the goal in front. Going for a friend’s birthday party or watching an interesting match on the day before a crucial exam or running errands that could have been postponed, to avoid studying are examples of giving in to temptations. A strong sense of priority, a firm resolve to remain detached from pleasurable alternatives, a deep desire to attain the goal set are essential to ensure that one doe not waver from the plans laid out. A very strong motivation like proving your mettle, surprising your critics, being with the best would surely be torch light that beams on the goal and guiding you towards it.

4. Relish achievements – Life would be both boring and stressed if we are only obsessed with attaining our goals. Every goal is actually a series of smaller goals being realized along the way. It is essential that we are aware of each of the sub goals and more importantly pause to enjoy and relish the attainment of these sub-goals. When we are able to relish the small achievements, they provide us added motivation, inspiration and energy to pursue our larger goals. If we take the case of academics, there would definitely be a subject or two that we do not enjoy as much as other subjects. The challenge then is to remain enthused to focus on those subjects so that the learning and subsequent results contribute significantly to one’s larger goal of academic excellence. It is important to enjoy the thrill of completing the set targets especially for those subjects that one finds tough or boring.

5. Don’t give up easily – Many a time, it is not the temptation of alternatives but the sheer pressure of the effort that would deflate our enthusiasm, sap our energy and depress us. Those low periods are the times when one is extremely vulnerable to throw in the towel and quit. Giving up is easy and the excuses will flow but the reality is that your goals remain unattained dreams. When the going gets tough, that is when one has look within for inspiration, motivation and positive action. Maybe a short break would help rejuvenate, perhaps the counsel of an elder or expert would bring fresh perspective or maybe you just have to change tracks and pursue the goal by traversing a different path; what is important is to continue not stop.

Remember that when excuses are gone results are got !

Here are 5 ways you can leverage the wisdom for your own personal success

Use it for Goal setting – Goal setting begins with thinking about the future, drawing up plans, reviewing the present and identifying milestones to ensure steady and focused progress. All this involves paying attention to one’s own inner voice, being pragmatic about the assumptions made, going beyond one’s comfort zone, taking giant leaps when required and making adjustments when required. Notice that at every stage you are focusing your attention on what you seek to attain and in the process you are channelizing your energies to fulfill those dreams.

Use it to be creative – One problem that many of us encounter is boredom. The other is the sheer monotony of the daily grind. Then there are awkward situations, unexpected crisis and the occasional need to be wriggle out of a tight spot. What is common to all these is the need to be creative and come up with an out of the box idea. Rather than being overwhelmed by the occasion or being flummoxed by the situation pay attention to find a solution and you will be amazed at how you manage to direct all your energy into coming up with something different and unique that is possible, pragmatic and definitely worthwhile.

Use it to overcome a challenge – There are many times, apart from those mentioned in the previous paragraph, when each of has to face a challenging situation, overcome a major problem we encounter or make a critical decision. While we may be armed with facts and figures, have a slew of alternatives to choose from and / or be given helpful tips, suggestions and advice when the moment of reckoning comes the individual has to make the choice. This is tough partly because of the criticality of the situation; partly because most alternatives look equally good or in some cases none of the alternatives seem effective. It is at these times that we have to keep focusing on the challenge on hand, direct our attention and channelize our energies to zooming in on the best solution under the circumstances.

Use it to make a dream come true – We all have our share of dreams, hopes, aspirations and desires. Some of it we translate into goals to be achieved but many more remain in the realms of wistful thinking, painful pining and exotic day dreams. As long as we hold on to those thoughts there is a possibility we will yet work on attaining it. If you let it go then you can never hope to achieve it. Keeping it alive in the mind is nothing but paying attention, albeit casually. What you don’t consciously realize is that by letting it be within your attention span you are directing your energies towards it. Perhaps this explains the success of late bloomers who left an inedible mark be it an a Col. Sanders of the Kentucky Fried Chicken fame or Grandma Moses the painter or Gandhiji who spear headed the Dandi March in his 60’s and the Quit India movement in his 70’s.

Use it to be a better individual – We are the sum total of all our physical self, our thoughts, our actions and reactions. If we pay attention to our physical self as also to those thoughts, actions and reactions that hamper our progress we would definitely find ways and means to change them for our betterment. If are overweight or sickly and became aware of it ( it happens only when we pay attention to it) we will find appropriate solutions to address the issue. Similarly, when we realize that we have a poor attitude that hampers our relationships or become aware of our tardiness or casualness that hampers our professional and personal progress we can find ways and means to overcome it. The key lies in realizing our limitations and recognizing our strengths which we can leverage. Realization comes only when we pay attention and then our energy can be directed for our personal betterment.

A dream and a purpose

3-12-Feb 15- Dreams and purposeThey say a clear conscience is the best pillow. If this be true, it is also the first step to ensure one has pleasant dreams and a rejuvenated self in the morning. Unfortunately most of us go to sleep with a lot of anxiety, remorse, anger and hurt partly because we believe life has been unfair and also because we have a lot of unfinished agenda that keeps nagging us at bedtime. Obviously when we plant the seeds of negativity and frustration in our mind, chances are that we will end up either up with disturbed sleep or wake up with a start on seeing a nightmare. Either way our sleep is ruined, our anxiety more acute and the new day heading up to an anticipated disaster. For many, Monday morning blues are a recurring weekly nightmare and that perhaps is typical of the magnitude of the problem.

Yet with a little effort, a pinch of optimism and a large dose of fortitude one can ensure that each night brings us sound sleep, sweet dreams and ample opportunities every dawn. The trick lies in tweaking ones thoughts, words and deeds.

Acknowledge achievement – Every night instead of focusing on all the pending tasks, the unfinished works and the irritating challenges you have to cope with, let your thoughts be on the success you achieved during the day, the tasks you managed to complete, the progress you have made on tough tasks, appreciations received, appreciations given to others, the tasks that have been delegated and completed well by others etc. When the focus is shifted to achievements, success, progress and satisfaction the mind is calm, you are at peace and you sow the seeds of positive possibilities to wake up to the next morning.

Respect ones limitations – Our inability to say NO, our need to help others even at a cost to our self, our urge to commit way beyond our abilities and inability or refusal to accept that we have our limitations creates a disconnect within our self. Our mind is then filled with guilt, remorse, annoyance while our physical self is battling with stress, deadlines and self inflicted challenges. End of day we psyche ourselves into being bitter, stressed and deflated. On the other hand if we are willing to appreciate and accept our personal limitations, we would immediately refuse to take on responsibilities and challenges that are beyond our capabilities. For a brief moment we would feel guilty, inadequate and possibly worry about personal progress but in the long term we would be rid of anxiety, guilt and remorse. Our mind is now nurtured to grow the seeds of positive thoughts and success.

Focus on possibilities – Everyone is swamped with tasks big and small. Yet we let our self doubts, fears and insecurities overwhelm us. Consequentially we let our minds stray and linger on what we fear we will fail in, instead of identifying the innumerable possibilities that we can succeed in. Learn to visualize problems and challenges as opportunities to progress. By identifying the numerous possibilities we are fertilizing our minds to produce dreams that one can turn into reality.

Identify the goal – To channelize our energies and direct us to success, we need to narrow the possibilities into tangible goals that we must focus on. The goal is determined by our passionate interest, our determination to succeed and the price we are willing to pay to attain the goal. Goals could also be the culmination of numerous aligned possibilities e.g. eating right, exercising regularly, lifestyle changes are all possibilities that can be aligned to a larger goal of reducing weight or being more fit or overcoming an illness. The goal is the harvest that the mind expects to reap when the time is right.

Pursue with purpose – The dreams often get shattered when we wake up and realize that we merely dreaming. However a self directed dream is the self starter that helps one to activate mind body and soul and channelize all energies to attaining our goals. The goal is now translated into a purpose to which we are drawn, to which we commit and that which makes each moment more meaningful, energetic and motivating. This is when we till the soil, plough into the thick of action and sweat it out because there is a purpose that draws out the best in us.

Relish success – When we attain success we need to celebrate that success. This is equivalent to emptying the mind and setting our hearts free while soaking in the elation of success. We free up our resources to pursue new dreams, identify a new purpose and be enthused to chase our goals, our dreams and the success we crave for.

Try this:

  • Identify an NGO operating in the sphere of your passionate social objective. Join up them after determining how and in what manner you will contribute. Do you feel enthused once you join up. What will be your measure of success to determine how you have contributed to the cause.
  • Identify 5 social problems that you view as urgently needing attention. Choose the one that in your estimation does not get enough attention or support. Identify innovative ways to pursue your passion to address the social problem, get more people aware and enthused.

Get started …keep going

1-9 Jan 15 Get Started keep goingUntil a few years ago, many motorized vehicles had starting trouble especially in winter and the monsoons. Fortunately with more research and better technology, very rarely does our vehicle give us starting trouble. Unfortunately, as individuals almost all of us have major issues with starting either something new or pursuing an existing activity. Evolution and technological revolutions have not helped the human race eliminate this limitation of starting trouble but they have facilitated ways and means to overcome it. However the real issue with personal starting troubles stems from the following:

Fear – Venturing into doing anything new is always a challenge because we fear failure, disappointment, lack confidence and are wary of the reactions of those who are keenly observing us. So all our good intent remains in the realms of possibility with a near zero probability of achievement. Most times we postpone starting under some flimsy pretext and other times we make half hearted attempts and give up too quickly. Ask yourself if you are actually pursuing your dreams or passions. If the answer is NO it is a clear indication that you failed to start moving in the direction of your dreams. Alternatively ask yourself if you are happy with the current state of affairs personal, professional and financial. If again you get NO for an answer, you know you feared doing something different that could possibly have helped you move towards making your life a lot better.

Lack of motivation – One reason most of our New Year Resolutions ( please read the previous blog post to read about this https://actspot.wordpress.com/2014/12/31/choose-well-and-make-a-difference-to-your-life-this-year/ ) fall by the way side is largely due to lack of motivation to sustain our quest. Someone who seeks to lose weight and another who wants to improve his/ her physique both sets of people often quit because the effort is too much but more importantly they do not see quick results and get demotivated faster. The same is true with students who find it hard to concentrate and study for their exams. Employees too suffer from the same problem especially when they have to do routine jobs and jobs that rarely get appreciation. For most people life is boring, it is a grind and it is merely for substance that they go about doing the bare minimum to attain the grade. So starting might seem like a huge achievement but continuing with the task and doing a good job requires a different mindset and attitude.

Indifference – This stems from both the earlier problems. Fear of starting and lack of motivation to continue, morph into an indifferent approach to any activity. Indifference could also be the result of sheer ignorance of the long term consequences or it could be the outcome of foolhardiness also. By being indifferent, an individual wastes his/ her time, talent and life. It also makes a person lethargic, complacent, casual and feel victimized. These people not only suffer starting trouble but worse still they rust out; tormented and tormenting those around.

To remedy the above situation, if you ever find yourself in such a predicament is to read the words of the quote in the start and to make a determined effort to begin. ( if you haven’t yet written down your New Year Resolutions at least write down right now 3 things you hope to achieve in the coming year). Now that you have begun, it would be a good idea to share the idea with a close friend / colleague / relation. This ensures that you have put pressure on yourself to stand by the challenge you have taken on for some of those with whom you shared would off and on check up on your progress. If our life were a movie, how interesting it would be to see the trailer of it and feel the thrill and excitement that is yet to come. No doubt there would be moments of pain and anguish, disappointments and frustrations, but like most movies, the end would always be a happy, idealistic and hopefully enjoyable one. Unfortunately, the movie of our life is scripted daily and so we continue to be a hero/ heroine on the stage of our life, little knowing what is scripted for us. Fortunately, we are also blessed with the gift of imagination, which enables us to take charge of our life, script and direct it the way we want to and succeed in large measure to have the most idyllic ending. So get set to telescope your imagination into your future and script your own success. Doing this is a simple matter of being imaginative ; begin by stating your life goals, anticipate the success you will achieve, roll up your sleeves and participate in the process, creating something tangible that you imagined and celebrating your achievements.

State – We often have wild fantasies, crazy ideas, some passionate beliefs, some out of the box thoughts etc but rarely do we ink it out and mull over it. As long as you can transcribe your imagination into words/ pictures/ doodles you will be able to attempt some work on it. Imagination should begin in the head but must be stated and spelled out clearly. Right now the best way to utilize the learning from the post is to jot down at least 3 ideas that came to your mind as you read this post.

Anticipate – If you have written down at least one idea, you would notice that your mind is already thinking about it even as you read the post. There is a sense of anticipation that the idea is workable. You are already evaluating alternatives to make the idea work. If you haven’t got an idea, you are reading further in the hope that you will get an ideas you read the post or at least at some point get some idea sometime later. Notice that it is this anticipation of getting a benefit that is motivating you to read. So stating your goal or vision or idea or dream helps you anticipate the next possibilities to attain your stated objective.

Participate – If you want things to happen, you have to start moving things. This essentially means you have to participate in the process. You give wings to your imagination and soar towards your goal by building the wings through effort, team work, rework, network and hard work. Even when you play a game, the key is your participation; if you don’t participate you can neither enjoy the game and for sure you cannot expect to succeed in the game. Participation must as far as possible be voluntary, self driven and pleasurable.

Create – As you sow so shall you reap; your intent, purpose, extent and passion in participation will determine what and how you create and achieve your goals/ dreams/ wish list. The process of translating your imagination into something tangible could be frustrating, backbreaking and dodgy. Yet, the experience would be invaluable, the rewards exhilarating and self fulfillment complete. There are times we won’t achieve perfection, some outcomes would be disappointing and criticism can be a constant companion but as long as you are progressing towards your goal and creating your dreams into reality, your life will be fulfilling.

Celebrate– The best part of imagination is not in day dreaming but in realizing that dream; in being a part of the achievement; in sharing the joy of the success and in relishing the fruits of success. Achievement is not merely a statistic but a vibrant creation and you are the heartbeat that pumps life into that creation.

Give your imagination wings and then use them to soar up high and enjoy the view.

  • How would you creatively / imaginatively dispose of your old clothes, books, footwear, odds and ends that are unnecessarily occupying space?
  • If you were to organize a party what unique games will you incorporate to make the party more entertaining and participative.
  • Considering your academics and interest, think up 3 unique career opportunities that you can possibly explore.

The secret to evolve and transform yourself

6-28 May 14-See me evolveEach of us can see the physical changes that each of us goes through but the subtle changes and evolution that we go through mentally, psychologically, behaviorally elude us. While we gather our academic credentials that is no conclusive evidence of our intellect, just as our acceptability by those around us is not proof of our attitude and temperament. What is indisputable is the fact that if we introspect, we will be able to recognize the changes in us. The changes could be the result of new learning, experience, conscious decisions or thrust upon us by unavoidable circumstances. Interestingly the changes we notice now are still within our grasp and we can with determination and effort change them to a desirable state. E.g. if you are overweight a good diet and exercise regime can often yield positive result or if you are frequently criticized for being late, with a stronger will and determination you can become punctual.

With one fact established that one can change, evolve and transform to being an even better person than what we are, the challenge before us is to find the right way to go about it. Here are a few techniques to attain this goal.

Appreciate the person that you have evolved into. Look back at your childhood, school days and the carefree youth you were/ are. Reflect on the various dreams, career options, plans that you contemplated. Examine them from the standpoint of where you are today and what you have achieved and don’t hesitate to also brood on the chances you missed, the failures you encountered, the discouragements you faced. Be aware of the achievements you have attained, the odds you have conquered and the encouragement and support you received from various quarters. Notice that you are thinking only about yourself, never comparing yourself with anyone else; for sure you are proud of whatever you are at this moment.

Be aware of your strengths and weakness. No one is perfect and you are no exception. Be conscious of the numerous strengths you posses no matter how insignificant it may seem. Your ability to march to a different drummer or act very differently from others may have evoked sharp criticism from others but that is your strength; value it.

Telescope your imagination to visualize the ideal you. If you noticed in the first two steps your focus was on identifying, appreciating and acknowledging your own growth, success and potential that you have leveraged. If a large part of that has happened without a conscious decision from your side, with adequate effort but not necessarily all your effort, imagine how much more you can achieve if you are focused, planned and eager to achieve your dreams. So now it is time for you to give free reign to your imagination, plan to work on your passions, be daring to walk on unexplored paths, believe in yourself. Remember you are limited only by your imagination; if you can dream it you can achieve it.

Outline your goals and ambitions. If you have consciously and deliberately identified various opportunities that you hope to exploit, it won’t happen unless you specify them as goals to achieve and ambitions to fulfill. This is a crucial step for it requires not just imagination but also logical thinking, pragmatic decision making and courage of conviction. It is chalking out the route map to attaining your goals that will pose problems, create doubts, shake your confidence and challenge your daring. However if you can visualize success and are prepared to strive hard and beat the odds, the only thing stopping you will be YOU.

Resolve to change, begin the change and evolve into the change you seek. Now that you are ready to explore your potential, harness your abilities and go for broke, make a firm resolution not to give up unless you have given yourself a fair chance and ample time. Once your psyche has been tuned to perfection, begin as planned and continue with faith. Results will take time, but pay attention to the small changes that will motivate you, listen to the voice of reason that may whisper to you at times so that you can make adjustments but beware of the loud roar of disillusionment and disenchantment that can derail your plans. Discernment is essential for you to ensure you act with reason. Watch yourself evolve into the person you are capable of being!

List one goal each for the following aspects of your life

  • Physical fitness
  • Financial stability
  • Social awareness
  • Family bonding
  • Personal growth

Pick out one activity that you would like to be proficient in that your spouse or family member dislikes but is forced to do. Eg. Washing dishes / cooking / record keeping etc. Now outline a plan to ensure you can play an effective supporting role in discharging the same duties so as to help / assit the other person.

Outline 3 activities that will help you bond better with your family especially teenagers in the house. If you are a teen, list out 3 activities that will enliven your presence in the house and pleasantly surprise those at home. Eg. If you are sloppy in arranging your room perhaps you can resolve to be more tidy and organized

Three ways to harness your energy

The next time your attention is caught by a young toddler who is a handful for those in whose care he/ she is, notice that the toddler is full of raw energy. You too have grown up displaying similarly energy and zest only to be shackled over the years by chains of negative thoughts, self doubts, fear, lack of confidence and in many cases the festering wounds of failure, rebuke, criticism and in some cases rejection.

As long as you have life, you are a potent force of limitless energy; but you can use it profitably only if you light it up with your own initiative, daring and imagination. The energy is the same in each one of us but it is harnessed differently by different people at different times. The stoic zen master or yoga guru uses his/ her energy differently from the way a WWF wrestler or boxer would use it. The saying ‘the pen is mightier than the sword’ is an acknowledgement that raw energy can be harnessed and channeled to be potent and effective.

To channelize your energy and harness it effectively, in a simple and practical manner, you need to be aware of the following:

Your thoughts begin it: Every single invention/ discovery / theory/ activity begins first as a thought; be it an idea/ a dream/ an obsession/ a desire or simply the urge to do something. Pause and reflect on the numerous thoughts going through your mind at this precise moment. Some of you be appreciative of the reading so far and would be energized to read further. There could be others who find it interesting but have other thoughts overriding their urge to read. There could be others wanting to bookmark the page for latter reading or some others wanting to become a subscriber of the blog. Irrespective of what your thoughts are, your energies will point you to the direction you have to or want to go.

Your emotions amplify it: While thoughts act like the ignition that starts the vehicle, it is your emotions that give you the direction and trigger the reflex action to engage gears and grip the steering wheel of your life so as to begin your journey towards your goal. Unfortunately, many of us mimic our childlike behavior when left unattended in a car. We sit on the driver’s seat and mimic the actions of a driver, pretending to use the steering and emitting the noise of an engine in an overdrive. We expend our energies in pretending to drive but remain stationary. It is therefore essential that we let positive / proactive / actionable emotions come naturally to us. Visualize possibilities/ success/ passion engulfing your thoughts and ideas and your will naturally be motivated to take steps to translate your thoughts in success.

Your actions give it the desired momentum: Now that you have started the ignition and your emotions have energized you towards your goal, you need to act. Action is the acceleration that is essential to gain momentum and is the most potent form of your energy. If you have read this far, it is not an accident but a conscious decision to act that began with the thought to read it, the positive emotion that the contents will be beneficial and your action to focus on the reading despite numerous other tempting options. ( For me too it was difficult to give up seeing the IPL and the EPL but then I knew my post was long overdue). So you would have noticed that both you and I can use our energy productively and the best part is that that is we have an endless supply of energy within us.

  1. Write down the 5 most important things you need to achieve by the month end/ year end. Jot down 2 key activities that you have to do to achieve each of these goals. E.g. You want to buy a new home. Key things could be speaking to a bank to know loan amount you can get and identify a good real estate broker.
  2. All of us want to increase our savings. There are two ways to do it. Increase your income or reduce your expenses. You have to identify 2 ways to increase your income and 3 ways to decrease your expenses. Remember to have a target in mind for the savings you hope to increase by acting on your plans.
  3. Which of these positive qualities do you posses which you can harness effectively. ( you can add / identify other qualities not listed below)
