Listen to your heart and give it a try…

13-13-Give it a try..

Today’s words of wisdom hold a special significance for me personally and hopefully it would also be an apt quote for all those reading this blog. Around three and half years ago in Jan 2010, when I conceived this blog, it was actually my second attempt at experimenting with the medium called blogs. I had first started off on 1st Dec. 2009 (http://www.poweract.blogspot.in/2009/12/poweract-fission-of-ideas-to-fusion.html ) and was fortunate to get a quick comment from a friend which was motivation enough to write regularly. However, when I began this blog and kept a target of writing daily, all three of the doubts expressed in the quote above overwhelmed me. Fortunately for me my heart was in the right place and nudged me hard enough and I am delighted that I have kept my pride intact, gained invaluable experience and have reason enough to make the point that unless you try you will never know what you can achieve.

When one is setting off to explore unknown territory, it is good to have some apprehensions but it is terrible to start with doubts. Apprehensions are nature’s way of injecting a sense of responsibility, caution and pragmatism all of which are essential to complete a challenge. Doubts on the other hand, fuel fear, deflate self belief and allow irrationally thoughts to creep into our mindset thus heightening the chances of derailing the journey almost as soon as we attempt it. Apprehension stems out of our inexperience coupled with the realization that there are lot of unknown variables along the way. Doubts on the other hand seep in when we let our pride assume humongous proportions morphing into false pride. There is no shame in failure if despite our best efforts we fail but there is no pride in chickening out for fear of failure.

Experience is either first hand or it is second hand (that what we see/ hear about others). Either way each adventure poses new challenges that even past experience may not necessarily equip us to handle. In fact experience should guide us to make the necessary adjustments to ensure success. At times though, experience can give valuable insights that could temper our pride especially so as to ensure that we do not do anything foolhardy. The key to leveraging experience is in making a realistic assessment of the risks, finding innovative means to minimize the risks and then translating the risks into worthwhile targets for us to pursue.

The toughest obstacle is posed by our logical mind which reasons out every action but is not fully equipped to accommodate variables like creativity, individual resilience and risk taking ability. Reasoning is an excellent mechanism for analysis, provides reference points that flag off caution and alerts and is a dispassionate tool for exercising our options. However, far too often reasoning tends to err on the side of caution thereby reducing the potency of our decisions. We cannot dismiss reason completely but have to temper it with our personal insights, gut feeling and a healthy dose of self belief. Don’t always let the head rule the heart.

The heart has its reasons; not necessarily logical nor would it be completely irrational. What it does is prod, push and nudge one to become aware of some hidden and untapped abilities, potential and daring that is ready to be harnessed. When we can add this mix to our rational and logical self we get a holistic mix far more potent than we can ever imagine. Success is all about finding this right holistic mix and using it appropriately by balancing our mind and our heart.

The voice from the heart may sound fainter than that from the mind; but it is for you to seek it, listen to it and then believe in it.

Try this:

  1. During the coming month participate in at least 3 contests. It could be giving answers to contests run by radio / TV channels or sending in your entries to contests run by newspapers/ magazines.
  2. Find & execute innovative ways (in which you are an active participant) to raise funds for your favorite charity. (Do not involve family or friends in raising the monetary resources) e.g. putting up some unused things owned by you  for sale on a website with the sale proceeds earmarked for charity.
  3. Prepare your own crossword/ quiz (the answers to which must have some relevance to your family and friends or your neighborhood or city) and use that in the next get together or party. E.g. which person in this group stays on the top most floor of his/ her building? Or  The person in this group who is born in Lucknow. Or find out some well know spots in the city which have a colloquial name but which can be translated into English. In the quiz give the English translation and ask people to identify it. For example in my city of Pune we have a Phoolwalla Chowk (Flowersellers roundabout) / Lakadipul ( Wooden bridge). These can be innovatively used to prepare your quiz.

It is not the load but how you carry it that matters…

13-12-it is not the load

When interacting with people, some people give you an immediate connect and you can actually feel their vibrancy, positivity and joy touching you in many ways and elating you. Unfortunately there are also many others who you would keep at arms distance, if not completely avoid given half a chance, simply because they are constantly grumbling, telling their woes, keep blaming others and exude bad vibes, spread demoralizing thoughts and drain us of our enthusiasm. If you were to spent a little time and understand the background, the daily routine and psychology of both sets of people you might make a startling discovery that in almost all cases the people are just like us, share the same sets of troubles, pleasures, hope, fears perhaps in varying degrees but it is their response to the situation that is the key difference that makes them likeable or disagreeable.

Now turn the mirror to yourself and ask honestly how others perceive you. Do I have many friends? Are my neighbors and colleagues happy to see me? Do I feel welcome when joining a group? Closer home, other than your pet dog are the rest of the family members thrilled to have me around? Do people freely interact with me, trust me, share their thoughts, concerns, hopes etc and seek my counsel or views? If you can honestly say yes to all the above, then you are one of the fortunate few who has mastered the art of embracing life with a song on your lips and hope in your heart. On the other hand if you are one who cannot spontaneously say yes to the above questions, there is no need to feel despondent for by and large you share your misery with a large number of people. Though it is said misery loves company, as an individual each of us would love to live life happily minus that miserable company.

The best way to cope with life is as under:

First accept the reality that there is a yin and yang that together forms life. While everyone wishes to embrace the good things life has to offer, when there is difficulty, pain, fear, frustration and the like, the inevitable reaction is to wonder why me. The quicker we learn to appreciate the quirks of life the easier it would be to welcome each new day with a happy heart.

The next is to cope with the yin with equanimity and the yang with alacrity. Having accepted the reality of the yin and yang of life, the challenge is how does one deal with them. In fact, in managing our response to the extremes that life throws up we would realize the inevitable truth that neither happiness nor sorrows last forever (although the latter might seem to be never ending). Therefore when things are going one’s way, when life is kind to us and when we are euphoric we must soak in those moments but never let them overexcite us. At the same time when faced with challenges, problems and troubles we must not be overwhelmed by them but be hopeful that this too shall pass.

Third is to attempt a balance between the two. This is a tricky step for while we cannot actually change the reality we can telescope our joys and miniaturize our troubles by some deft psychological ploys. Learn to savor every triumph, relish every joy and spread joy and sub consciously lengthen the ecstasy, deepen the thrill and enrichen our life. Similarly when fate deals us a poor hand, when the shadows seem to be lengthening and joy looks elusive look out for the light at the end of the proverbial tunnel. The change in fortunes seems just a step away, the gloom will seem to be disappearing and the hard knocks of life will be less bruising and painful. The balance you have maintained is in keeping a pragmatic proportion between the long periods of ecstasy and the brief unavoidable reality of despair.

Finally embrace each moment as the best moment for it shall never come again. The first three rules are to be practiced diligently and allowed to gently be ingrained subconsciously. That is the point of inflection when you will actually begin to embrace life warts and all. From then on you will look eagerly for the break of dawn, appreciate the joys of everyday life, value the joys of relationships, find surprises in the chirping of the birds and the blooming of the flowers and there will be a spring in every step you take. Hurdles that would invariably appear most unexpectedly would not frighten you nor would they then seem insurmountable and you would find the will, the means and the way to side step every hurdle. You will then kiss each moment for it will never give you another chance again.

The secret to coping with the surprises, shocks, joys and jolts of life is in accepting reality of constant change, maintaining harmony no matter what the challenge or surprise and making best use of the gift of life by living it and not merely surviving it.

Try this:

For a week try to live life by making the following adjustment each day. This will give you a better appreciation of how those who have to live with the limitation have adjusted to their permanent problem and yet live their life to the full.

Day 1 – Do not use your regularly used hand ( if your right handed do not use the right hand for the whole day)

Day 2 – Tie a splint around any one of your knees so that you cannot bend your knees. Now go about your daily chores with this handicap.

Day 3 – Avoid the use of any means of electrical /electronic devise – no telephone/ mobile/internet/ TV / Dish washers / credit cards/ etc.

Day 5 – Attempt not to talk to anyone / minimize your oral communication but go about your daily tasks.

Day 6 – Spend an entire day at an orphanage/ old age home/ prison /hospital or on any social service that you have never ever been to or attempted before.

Day 7 – Set your own challenging goal and try to live it out.

Oh this is me !

13-7-Oh this is me

First read the words above again and then proceed to read further with a smile on your face for you have discovered your true self now. Not just you but check with family and friends and you will find that each one of them will identify with the above reality. The pain, sufferings and mistakes are often the first thing that we recollect when we try to rationalize our journey thus far.  The successes we have enjoyed, the achievements and accolades received are often seen as insignificant compared to the effort, the hurdles and problems that we have battled. Yet, we would in rare moments of candidness, admit that the journey thus far has been worth it for it made us better, more resilient and definitely proud of ourselves.

The reality is that almost everyone feels that he/ she could have done a lot better if only…

  • We worked harder
  • We were a wee bit luckier
  • We had the daring to follow our heart
  • Were a wee bit more patient
  • Could control our emotions and manage relationships better etc.

Since the past cannot be undone, there is little to gain by ruing over it. Yet, by our very nature we tend to lapse into ruminations about the past, particularly those events/ situations that we wish could be undone. That is when, we need to be more pragmatic, be more optimistic and seek out the blessings that every experience has given us.  To begin with, you are alive and well enough to still influence the course of your life and destiny.  No matter what your age, what your social or economic background or what your education is, hope exits as long as there is life.

Here are 3 steps to lead a more fulfilling and rewarding life

Map your coordinates. Do a realistic assessment of your personal, financial, career related and social status. This could involve deep thinking, extensive note making and should ideally also include free and frank discussions with family and friends.  Do not shy away from noting the negatives, the concerns that need to be addressed and the occasional candid but unpleasant feedback you get.

Adjust your compass. If mapping the coordinates felt like a burden, adjusting the compass is sheer torture. This is because for once you have to purposefully look to the future with hope and fortitude but with the baggage of the coordinates grounding you to reality. So while we may have fanciful ideas, imagine pots of gold at the end of the illusionary rainbow we fancy, the path would we long winded, uphill and rocky. The secret lies in generating enough passion within yourself to sustain and motivate you to that goal.

Proceed purposefully. Once the goal is clear and the current coordinates established no matter how far the goal is we need to proceed with hope, determination and joy. While hope kindles the spirit, determination propels is in the journey and it is the joy in the journey that makes the effort easier and smoother.

Look in the mirror and do you see a more confident you?  If you have cone thus far, there is nothing that can stop you now from attaining your goals.  Keep striding , striving and succeeding !

Try this:

Go in front of the mirror and try to get the following expressions on your face

  • Happiness
  • Anger
  • Disgust
  • Frustration
  • Pain
  • Irritation
  • Coyness
  • Indifference

(How tough or easy was it for you to do it? Do you have a better appreciation of the job of an actor/ actress when they have to emote on screen? Do you think you can do a better job of emoting in front of the mirror if you had a situation or scene or script to give you an authentic setting for the emotions to be expressed? Do you think that script is equally to the Compass for an actor?)

Set yourself free

13-1-Set yourself free_life

With the start of a new year, we can begin afresh, leaving behind both the troubles and the accolades of the past year behind. While the past will always be lurking in the deep recess of our minds, the future invariably gives us hope but is largely tempered by apprehensions born out of a wild imagination. The present then is squeezed between nostalgia and apprehension, your hopes and your despairs and your dreams and your nightmares. The only way out is to set yourself free; free of your own self imposed bondage.

Here is how you go about setting yourself free

Find a purpose for yourself. Parental expectations during our formative years have a large bearing in how we visualize a future for ourselves. However, the individuality in you often feels stifled and throttled by having to toe a line drawn by others. However perilous a course we chart for ourselves, if we focus on our goal our journey would be more meaningful, more fulfilling and definitely more liberating.

Tip: Write an epitaph for yourself and you would have the purpose of your life outlined clearly.

Reward yourself. We often ourselves overburdened, stressed and running to stay ahead in pursuit of our goals. It is as if the world is examining us with a microscope and we need to do meet their expectations. The reality is you have to pace yourself not with the benchmarks set by others but in relation to our own abilities, potential and capabilities.. This invariably means that you have to reward yourself; be it by taking breaks, indulging in something off beat, taking your foot off the gas pedal or simply lounging around and clearing your mind.

Tip: The key is not how far you go but how much you have enjoyed the journey.

Explore beyond yourself. Time to change your routine. Give yourself a new makeup. If you have been following the beaten path, pause, think of the numerous possibilities that you have failed to explore. Have you wanted to try your hand at something off beat? Ever tried bungee jumping or rock climbing or scuba diving? Ever had the urge to learn a musical instrument or act in a play? Did you always have a social service streak that you never dared to try so far?

Tip: There is nothing stopping you except your inhibitions and possibly your inertia.

Excuse yourself.

Notice that at every stage you are doing what you have planned for yourself, without being weighed down by the expectations, the hopes, the plans and the aspirations others have for you. It is possible that in the process you would have stumbled, bruised yourself, suffered criticism, wondered if you made a mistake and worse of all get the sinking feeling that you should not have dared to move out of your comfort zone. Learn to excuse yourself no matter what the consequence of your personal, calculated and deliberate actions.

Tip : Since you chose to follow your heart and mind you should allow your heart and mind to be free of any guilt.

It is your life – set it free – find the YOU within YOUrself.

Try this:

  • List out 5 of your apprehensions/ fears. Now for each of them work out a way to actually confront your fear. E.g. You fear lizards. Now find a reptile zoo that you can visit to actually confront that fear. Don’t do it because it is suggested here but because you want to overcome those fears.
  • List out 5 of your greatest desires or wishes. Now for each of them work out a way to actually realize them. E.g. You want to go on a cruise. Now read up on all the cruises. Select one that seems to catch your imagination. Slowly but deliberately start working on the finances, the dates, the preparations etc. for it. Before you realize it you would be packing your bags to realize your dreams.

Dream BIG… ACT quick

Before reading any further take a pen and paper and jot down the 3 materialistic things that you still don’t own but which you would love to posses.  It would help if you were as clear as possible about the details (e.g. Color, shape, form, brand etc) of those possessions you desire to own desperately.

Hopefully you have taken the suggestion above seriously and taken the effort to jot down the above. This is a precondition to getting the maximum benefit of the contents of this post. In case you haven’t yet jotted down, please take a moment to reflect and write down. Assuming that you have written down what you desperate wished to posses, here is one more opportunity for you to let your imagination run wild and replace that with something more exotic or expensive or rare. I am imploring you to dream big and do not let your fears or apprehensions stop you from giving wings to your imagination.

Look around and examine the lives of those who you know personally, who have in your view, achieved success that you never imagined they would. While a bit of fate and luck could surely have played a decisive part in their achievements, a dispassionate evaluation would reveal that they dreamt big, worked hard and never let their fears overpower their dreams. What have you to lose by dreaming big? In fact if you dare to dream big you will lose only your fear of poor self esteem and lack of self belief.

The tragedy of many who dream big is that they don’t actively pursue their dreams. Most end up day dreaming whilst the others make feeble efforts and give up when the going gets tough. One way to get going and be motivated is to share the broad outline of your dream and plan of action with close friends and well wishers. Having articulated it, you are immediately obliged to ensure you stick to your plans and proclamations. Your friends and well wishers would also follow up, pressurize you, offer support and encourage you when your spirits droop.

Ideally the big dreams must be broken up into achievable and coordinated sub activities. This requires deep reflection, pragmatic thinking and sustained commitment. Never lose sight of your dreams in the hurly burly of daily life. In fact it would be a good idea to also have a dream chart that could contain possible visuals of what you are aiming for and put this up at a prominent place in your home that ensure you see it every day. It would also help to allot a fixed time to review the progress of your dreams. While there is no shame in giving up on a dream that is just not achievable, watch out for the tendency to give in too soon or change dreams too often.

Now take a good look at the dreams that you have listed out before you began reading this post. Work out your plan of action. Also outline 10 people with whom you will share a broad outline of your dream and inform at least 3 of them immediately. Before the weekend all the 10 must get to know a fair bit about your dreams.

Try this:

  1. Make it a point to try and vividly recall and jot down your next dream that you see whilst asleep. Try and find positive implications/ meanings/ message/ interpretation of that dream.
  2. Apart from the above 3 dreams,  list out one or two more dreams for any of the following
  • Financial goals related Dream
  • A social objective related dream
  • An environment friendly dream
  • A dream related to education or sports

Get set go go go …

Each and every one who reads this post can identify with the above quote. Each of us can easily recount the numerous new resolutions, birthday resolutions and wonderful intentions that have been listed out and pondered over but alas remain mere resolutions.  It is not that we do not want to execute and put into practice those numerous tasks, deeds and desires but we find it hard to be both the starter of the race and the participant in the race. For far too long we have been directed, led, coached, disciplined, motivated and cajoled by parents, teachers, family and well wishers that we have lost the zest to be self directed and self starters.

With the Olympics just a few days away, it is just the right time to share some tips on how to be a self starter and get set go…

Put it in writing.  It is said that if you can dream it you can achieve it. The same holds true for jotting down all what one wants to achieve. One has to take time out to think, reflect and then write down dreams, hopes, aspirations, passions, goals and personal challenges. On a day to day basis one also needs to jot down the repetitive, the mundane, the unavoidable and the inevitable tasks be it paying bills, discharging one’s social obligations or mere record keeping and filing.

Prioritize When having a multitude of tasks listed out, the biggest obstacle to overcome is deciding priorities. Fixing routines for the frequent and regular activity would help prune the list of tasks dramatically. What is left is often the challenging, the daunting and the inevitable tasks on the postponement agenda. Putting start dates and milestone achievements dates would make the tasks look less daunting, more achievable and certainly more tempting to begin.

Begin with faith and continue with hope. Whether challenging or routine, tasks will be well begun only when we start it. The trick is to begin earnestly, movie decisively and continue relentlessly. Your achievement will never be measured with that of another individual; it will merely be a series of progress at varying pace perhaps, but nevertheless progress that gives rise to the hope of ending in success.

Resolve with unwavering intent by finding motivators. If one can visualize the motivators even as one is writing down the tasks, getting of the blocks would be very spontaneous and simple. It is equally important that one continues to seek and find motivators to keep going for many a time, things get disheartening, one gets dispirited and disenchantment would tempt one to give up. The antidote to this is find the right motivators. Some motivators that are easy to identify with are progress made, positive feedback got, applause and support. The best motivators though are more subtle and very personal e.g. the feeling of having done a good job; the satisfaction of seeing the efforts translate into outstanding performance; the great high that we get when we can see our talent being fully utilized; the knowledge that we have influenced others positively etc.

Take in the aroma of achievement and share the joy. While a winner will always experience elation that none of the others can, in harnessing our potential, we are in competition only with ourselves. We can therefore experience a new high and elation every single time we meet our expectations. It could be simply attempting something for the first time or discovering a new facet/ talent/ ability in yourself. It is equally important that one shares ones big and small successes with others, for the energy that they will inject back in you through their acknowledgement, appreciation, suggestions and encouragement  will inspire and motivate you to become a self starter and quickly move on to other tasks listed.

Remember that you should see yourself as an athlete participating in the decathlon or triathlon and not merely the sprints or the marathon, for you will always have a variety of challenges all the way; in some you will excel, some would be exasperating but in the end you have achieved most if not all of what you set out to do if you Get Set Go… and begin.

When the going gets tough…

There are times when the spirit is low, the pathway seems steep and the goal looks very distant. Disappointment is evident, frustration is natural and giving up seems the best and easiest way out of the predicament. It is at these times that we consciously or unconsciously attempt to reach out for help, support and encouragement and the two mains stays of our life friends and a song to hum anchor us firmly to the bedrock of hope, positivity and inspiration.

Notice carefully that friends and that includes family, neighbors and colleagues are the external anchor that we can physically lean on. The importance of being social is never more clearly articulated when we face a crisis and seek support from those around. When the human race is unique qualified as a being ‘social animals’ it was well established that human beings need each other at all times and its efficacy and importance is best established when one experiences it when one needs it most; a death in the family is an extreme case and contrasting that are the joyous occasions like a wedding or a birth. In day to day life though we experience this social dimension practically every moment be it at the work place or at home. The times when we are

A song on the other hand is an internal anchor, developed through our upbringing, our attitude and our fortitude.  Most of us are bathroom singers, who open up and express our joy through our tuneless, carefree and occasionally senseless rhythmic meanderings secure in the knowledge that we are all by ourselves. That gives us a good clue as to how important a role a song plays in translating our emotions into an expression of hope, delight and fun. There are times when a song lifts us up when downcast and forlorn and other times we would rather merge our emotions with the pathos and subtlety of the poetry. The latter though does not last long and when we have indulged in reliving our sorrows through a mournful song, we realize the futility of regret and find a more meaningful peppy song to uplift and inspire us.

When amongst good friends, have you noticed the cares of the world seem to disappear, life seems like a breeze and while tomorrow may not change very drastically, it becomes a lot easier to embrace tomorrow?  Similarly when a lilting tune pops out of nowhere and we merrily hum it, especially when confronted with a problem, an issue or a challenge, the load becomes lighter, the burden more bearable and there is a ray of hope that seems perennial. Do you anything more to live life to the fullest?

  1. Make a list of 5 of your good friends and outline the one quality of theirs that endears him/ her to you.
  2. Can you recollect the names of books or movies in which friends have been shown to bond despite all odds and differences? E.g. Remember the Famous 5 and Secret seven series of Enid Blyton

Identifying people who have a positive influence

When one looks back on the days gone by, there will be some people and some incidents that you will recall with great fondness. Focus on these people whose memories always bring a smile to the lips and warmth in the heart and you will be transported to a world of nostalgia. If you correlate some of your successes with the influence these people have had on your life, you would be amazed at the volume of positive inputs they have given you. These inputs could be as varied as having full faith in you, encouraging you,  guiding in you, comforting you, giving you tips, empathizing with you, allowing you the freedom to pursue your passion, supporting you when you falter etc.

Here are a set of people who would be ideal people to associate with and benefit from.

Those close to you.  Beginning with parents and siblings, the list includes friends, colleagues, teachers and seniors. Of course it is possible that some of those close to you would find it hard to empathize with your thoughts and views but it is in your interest to give their counter point of view a hearing. The best part of their support is their response is always keeping your best interest in mind.

Those who have a natural flair to be cheerful and positive. Some of these people could be from the above list but it is equally possible that you do meet others who radiate positive energy. It could be trainers, motivational speakers, superiors from other departments, neighbors etc.

Those who you find knowledgeable, fair, impartial and open. These could include people in positions of authority like the principal of an institution or a senior academician, senior executives in your organization, experienced professionals, a friend’s parents etc.

Those who are good listeners.  Anyone who is willing to lend you an ear, pay attention to you and express interest in your thoughts, views, hopes and aspirations. They may counter question, raise objections, have a different point of view but as long as they pay a lot of attention to you, you can be sure their patience and genuine interest will accelerate your progress.

Those who display appreciation, give proactive encouragement and offer creative solutions. You often meet people from varied backgrounds, experiences and views at seminars, conferences, meetings etc. It is possible that they have some insights that are congruent to your line of thinking. If they display interest in your views, ask relevant questions and give encouraging feedback you can be sure you can profitably tap into their vast repository of knowledge, experience and wisdom.

Our business in life

Time and time again, many of us end up wishing we could do better in life. While having more wealth would perhaps be uppermost in our wish list, there are many other yearnings like being better looking, more articulate, more daring, more intelligent, more popular etc. What is common across this spectrum of wishes is the reality that our desires are often fueled by a streak of jealously or a craving for them because someone else has it in ample measure. A natural corollary of this sort of thinking is a subconscious breeding of negative emotions and a stifling of our own strengths, abilities, talents and potential.

Without exception, each of us is blessed with a uniqueness that is hard to explain, difficult to identify but something that is definitely possible to utilize. Nothing is as unique to each of us as our ability to think independently. So by tweaking our thinking inwards to our talents, our abilities and our immense potential we can focus on a structured, proactive and gratifying life by using all the gifts we posses to the fullest. We need not make great inventions nor are we required to take path breaking steps to leave our mark in this world; all we need to do is improve everyday and thereby influence the world around us personally, progressively and positively.

To improve and get ahead of ourselves we need to PLAN

Prepare– No one wins a battle even with himself/ herself without preparation. The primary requirement is to make an objective personal assessment of one’s own strengths and weakness, outline the contours of personal potential and perceived limitations and make a personal scorecard in the form of GOALS. Progress can then be measured, slippages be recorded and the effort required clearly identified once the preparation is comprehensively done.

Labor – From birth onwards we have to labor or work, right from the time we wailed loudly at birth and progressively thereafter as we learnt to speak and walk. Fortunately for us nature had prepared the blueprint for our development from babies to being children and then our parents and teachers prepared our blueprint to adolescence.  From adolescence when we began to have our own independent thinking the labor slowly became more personal and individual specific. If we have cultivated good habits, encompassed the right work ethics and have the right attitude we can utilize our preparation with the appropriate effort to achieve our goals. However labor is not embraced easily because it involves hard work, discipline and the rewards are occasionally not commensurate.

Assess – For the average person nothing is more painful than getting a report card. Assessing one’s progress and performance in real life is far more tougher for the failures are more painful, occasionally there are no second chances and success often seem very fleeting and momentarily. Yet when viewed with faith and hope as the predominant emotion, a pragmatic assessment offers us opportunities to progress, improve and excel. We can become aware of the corrections we need to do in order to realize our full potential and it also helps us luxuriate in the coziness of our success especially when we had planned and labored well.

Navigate – There are times when we can be numbed by our inability to progress, stunned by unexpected failures or stumped by quirks of fate that would challenge our resilience. For some of us it is equally probable that we can be drunk with success, fail to appreciate that we did get lucky breaks and go adrift in the vast ocean of life. It is these times that necessitate that we navigate carefully, purposefully and successfully through the minefield of self doubt, fear, arrogance and brazenness.

If we can plan our life as above, everyday would bring us the joy of personal progress, the thrill of looking forward to tomorrow and the bliss of a fulfilling life.

Try this:

  1. Outline 5 childhood dreams that you have yet to fulfill. Now work out an action plan to attempt to achieve at least 2 of these dreams in a reasonable time frame.
  2. Make a list of 5 successful persons at least 2 of whom you have personally known. Enumerate at least 3 qualities that you believe made each of them successful.
  3. Assuming you had adequate financial resources write down
  • One personal dream you would try to realize
  • One personal quality that you would try to develop
  • One new skill set that you would go ahead and acquire
  • One social service cause you would commit yourself to

Nurturing the spirit in the New Year

For me personally, the above quote is the perfect one to begin the New Year’s first post. After setting a personal target to write every day in 2010 when I began this blog, I was delighted when by December 2010, I had managed around 345 posts. After a diligent start to 2011, both reader fatigue and personal fatigue induced me to scale down my target to just around one post a week. Even this I realized was tough going and by December end 2011 I was just happy that the year had ended albeit with very little output to showcase on this blog. Then I chanced upon this quote and that injected fresh life into my blogging endeavor and here I am back with the hope of doing  much more than in 2011.

There would many like me who have enjoyed the high points of success but have also experienced the low point of drudgery that sometimes overwhelms us. This is inevitable, but surrendering meekly to it is optional. For almost every individual, life by and large is fairly routine, occasionally stressful, sporadically successful but largely very boring. At various points in this cycle of life, the temptation to give in and surrender meekly is often overwhelming, but then the spirit of survival takes over and coerces us to take charge of our life. It is this spirit that we are all blessed with which needs to be nourished so that it powers us from within to tide over the bumps, the hurdles, the pitfalls and the chasms that we need to cross in our journey called life.

This is my 4 A’s formula to help nourish the spirit.

Accept with grace. Good or bad, pleasant or unpleasant, bountiful or frugal these are extremes in a continuum and we need to accept that in the journey of life we would be getting our share of these. Rather than crave for more of good or whine about our troubles we should calmly and deliberately focus on acknowledging the fact that we receive these only because we are alive. Life by itself is a grace of the almighty and what comes with it needs to be accepted as it is. By accepting ourselves unconditionally we are ensuring that our spirit is fully charged up within us.

Avoid negativity. Finding fault, making comparisons, being dissatisfied are very human traits. Notice that these are never found in the animal kingdom and yet we proudly claim to be a more evolved species.  The irony is obvious and so we would be better off taking a leaf out of the book of the animal kingdom and wake up each morning with the hope of a better day.  By avoiding the negatives we would be letting our spirit shine brighter.

Appreciate gratefully. As an evolved species we have the power of communication, higher level of intelligence, the special gift of being creative and the individuality that is so unique to each one.  We need to realize that with these special gifts we are empowered to meet any challenge. Once we appreciate this power within us, we would be reinforcing our spirit.

Align harmoniously.  We need to align our life to our goals, our dreams, our expectations by soaking in the grace that we are blessed with, eliminating the negativity that we are tempted to embrace and by adding zest to our living by appreciating the blessings given in abundance to us. When we align our thoughts, hopes, aspirations, expectations to our material, spiritual, intellectual and social wealth we would realize that the spirit engulfs us from within and we radiate that spirit in our thoughts, words and deeds.

Try this:

  1. Play a game of snakes and ladders with a group consisting of someone much older, another person of around your age but of the opposite sex and a child. Notice that the group is heterogeneous and there is an equal probability of each person winning.  Can you see life as this game being played by characters not too different from those playing with you. The only difference is that in the game of life, everyone is assured of a win.
  2. List out all your negative thoughts, fears, worries etc. one below the other. When you run out of ideas to include in this list, realign this list in order of your most worry some thoughts. Adjacent to this list, against each point write down all the blessings, positive points, the skill sets that you posses. Once you have listed this in the next column write down all your hopes, your aspirations, your dreams. Now study the table and put a line under the last row where each of the columns is filled in. Cut of all the items in the other two columns against which there is no item in any of the adjacent column. Put a time frame column adjacent to the dreams column and enter a time frame to achieve each of your dreams, hopes and aspirations. Make this your practical horoscope and envisage the future for yourself.
