Everyone faces problems. Each one has to confront his/ her fears regularly. Worry and stress are as much part of our lives as are happiness and contentment.  However, there is one danger that worry and stress triggers; the danger of giving up; of surrendering; of quitting. At times it is possible that giving up chasing an unrealistic and improbable craze is the right solution. Most times though, we give up simply because we let our stress cloud our judgment, our rational and weaken our ability to stay strong.

Taking deep breathes both figuratively and practically always helps calm nerves. Figuratively, as long as we can breathe, you are alive to make a change/ a difference to your life. Practically speaking, deep breathes help calm nerves, enables one to postpone drastic judgment and gives one time to contemplate the next wise move. The focus must be on finding a solution rather than getting overwhelmed by the challenge on hand. To find a solution, it is important to mull the problem from the prism of possibility and not view it from an imaginary kaleidoscope of despair, hopelessness and impossibility. The possibilities may not be visible immediately and anxiety can be coming in waves that threaten to drown you. Instead you must become like a duck that appears calm on the water but is furiously paddling below. Explore possibilities, take help if required, keep trying and suddenly you will have unraveled the knot that seemed to have tied you up forever.

Coping with stress requires mental toughness. Self belief is the key. Self belief breeds courage, it opens doors to possibilities and unlocks hidden potential. Deep breathing as a technique is a quick and effective way to cope with stress.  With every breath you take the oxygen going in energizes you and with each breathe we expel, the toxicity within gets thrown out. It lays the foundation for one to de-stress. Self belief is the outcome of fine tuning the mind to soak in and absorb all your talents, your capabilities and your deep resolve to confront your troubles and overcome it. Not giving up is the cusp of self belief. It is also the trigger that helps one convert challenges into success.

Try these:

  1. List out three things that you started enthusiastically but then gave up or something you are keen to attempt but have not yet got around to doing it. Your challenge is to pick up at least one of these tasks and get going within the next one week.
  2. Pick up the leisure page of any daily newspaper and attempt any of the activities like puzzles or crosswords and set yourself a deadline to complete it. Repeat daily till you gain a better proficiency.

Have you learned your lesson?

24- 21 Aug 15 -Have you learned your lessonAs children, we were largely dependent on our parents, elders and teachers to help us find our way in life especially learning life skills. Formal education, manners and etiquettes, independent and creative thinking, our morals and values, our attitudes and beliefs etc. were all strongly influenced by our elders and those whom we have come in contact with. However, with the passage of time, each individual matures and slowly weans away from this support system as a natural progression of life. The take away’s that remain with us and which we display in latter years are the lessons we have learned and imbibed through our interactions, formal study and independent thinking. Hopefully each one of us largely grasped and imbibed the right lessons and display this learning in our interactions.

Some universal lessons that every individual must learn include the following

Success is never final nor failure ever fatal: Every achievement that we are proud of has to be celebrated for it is the testimony to hard work and diligent effort. Success is also a great morale booster but should you let success go into your head, we would be blinded to better opportunities, fail to recognize competition and even loose the zeal for further achievement. At the same time, for the vast majority, success is largely elusive; yet the disappointment of failing must be viewed as a blip in the continum called life. There would be new opportunities, fresh challenges and renewed vigor to aspire and perspire for our goals. Failure is often, just a reality check that indicates we have to still prepare better and attempt again. Failure helps one value discipline, hard work and success. Use failure as a spring board for a giant leap not as a dead weight to drown in self pity. Failure is just one step backward while success is just one step forward; the gap to be filled is never too wide.

You cannot cross a chasm in two steps: Decision making is perhaps the one life skill that distinguishes the leaders from the followers. It is a skill that comes from a mix of learning, understanding and daring. Every individual has to, at some time or the other, face the reality of having to make decisions. That is when an individual has to take that leap of faith and make those big decisions that have major ramifications. The consequences of the decision could be either ecstatic, indifferent or devastating. What is important to learn is that we cannot run away from making those decisions. At times we have to take calculated risks. You cannot reach different shores unless you are willing to set sail and lose sight of the familiar shoreline.

When faced with a mountain you climb it, go around or dig through it: Problems are those imaginary mountains that we encounter daily. Most of them are minor hiccups, some inevitable irritants and a few major challenges. We often end up making a mountain out of a molehill and then endlessly worry about getting around the problem rather than trying to tackle the problem intelligently. Merely worrying about a problem is like sitting on a rocking chair; there is a lot of movement but you aren’t going anywhere. Translate your worry into tangible course of action to solve the problem. Sometimes the solutions seem more cruel than the problem, as in the case of choosing to ampute a gangrene threatened limb or going through a course of chemotherapy with all the allied side effects. However most problems, fortunately, are relatively minor and not life altering. There is a solution for every problem; the challenge is to calm the mind and explore alternatives and be decisive and bold enough to choose and execute one of the alternatives.

Know the difference between persistence and obstinacy: Try until one succeeds is a good maxim to adopt in life. Where we fail the first time, we must not give up on our dreams and with better preparation and a good plan of action try again and again. However, one needs to be both practical and realistic and if the goal set is beyond one’s rational ability and the proof is constant failure, it is vital that one learns to realize the difference between being persistent and being pig headed and obstinate. Many success stories were not written, because the authors failed to leverage their strengths and instead chose to bull doze their way, rather than change the script. Seek advice, pay attention to feedback, think rationally, minimize emotional indulgence and chase the dream that you can wake up to and live.

It is never too late to learn: Hopefully this post would have engaged your mind and made you think again. It is never too late to learn and put that learning into practice. Perhaps some new thoughts have emerged; maybe a latent dream has awakened, possibly you are already putting the lessons learnt into practice. You can learn from the most unusual people / circumstance. So be open to all sources of learning; open your heart mind and body so that no prejudice, irrationality or fear would filter your learning. Your learning stops only with your last breath. Till then keep an open mind, a grateful heart and a lively spirit. Today is yours to explore, enrich and empower through the lessons each moment offers.

  1. Think of the 3 most valuable lessons you learnt in life. Who was responsible for helping you learn. Did you ever acknowledge / appreciate their efforts?
  2. Identify the 3 major failures in your life. What was the learning from each of these failures? Did you give up because of a failure? Were you bitter and agnostic because of a failure?
  3. Do you have any regrets in your life? Are any regrets linked to your failure to be decisive and take action? Were any failures a result of being impulsive and taking emotional decisions?
  4. Can you learn something new in the coming week? You can choose from any of the following or set your own goal for a new learning.
  • A new magic/ card trick
  • Play a new sport
  • Attempt to write a poem/ essay/ short story/ film review
  • Visit a prison / hospice / mental asylum
  • Adopt a pet dog/ fish / turtle /cat etc.
  • Get involved in an artistic venture like a play/ a band/ an art or photographic exhibition

Three bones that straighten your life

18-27 Sept 14-The 3 bones that hold up life

Physically, the human race is not blessed with a wishbone (a forked bone (the furcula) between the neck and breast of a bird. According to a popular custom, this bone from a cooked bird is broken by two people, with the holder of the longer portion being entitled to make a wish) but figuratively speaking we need to have a wishbone for more than one reason. To begin with, a fishbone would be the perfect blend between our potential and our goal realisation. Secondly, this imaginary bigger piece of the wish bone that we are all blessed with is our ability to think for ourselves, dream big and zoom in to our goals. Thirdly the wishbone would be the ideal prop that will provide us the motivation, the passion and the zeal to strive for better things in life.

A backbone is what helps us keep our torso erect, helps us maintain our posture and enables us to move around on two feet. The real test of the backbone is its ability to take on a load. Physical load is passé but it is the mental load, the strain and stress that pose the real challenge. Figuratively speaking a good backbone is a mix of the right attitude, self belief and daring. Only those with this kind of a backbone won’t shy away from a challenge, hard work or risk. With the right wishbone egging us on, a strong backbone is what helps one to attain ones goals and translate dreams into reality.

Along the way, life is often unpredictable, full of surprises occasionally harsh but definitely full of opportunities. Often opportunities masquerade as difficulties, hard work and fantasies. That is when a funny bone would come to the rescue. When one learns to laugh at one’s own follies, can see the joke being played on you by life and see beyond the sweat and tears with a smile on your face, that is when the funny bone becomes the oxygen that a breathless man gasps and revives. A funny bone also helps diffuse tensions, enables one to see situations from a different light hearted perspective and clears our mind by getting rid of worries and tensions.

Unlike the physical bones in your body that hold you up and gives your physical frame shape, it is just 3 imaginary figurative bones that actually gives meaning to your life.

Try this:

  • Can you think of 3 of your favorite jokes? Can you visualize yourself as a central character in any of the jokes?
  • If you were to be granted 3 wishes, what three wishes would ask for and why?
  • To prove that you have a real sturdy backbone, over the next few days try the following
  1. On day one watch the TV with earplugs so that you hear nothing but can see the visuals. Try it for at least 1 hour.
  2. On day two go to bed without dinner and sleep on the floor using just a bed sheet instead of a mattress.
  3. On day three, set a target for yourself to raise as funds to be donated for a cause. Go about raising those funds from strangers or by using challenging & innovative ways.
  4. On day four you have to buy 5 gifts, each not costing more than Rs.20 and surprise 5 people with those gifts.

13-26- life is about creating yourself

Take a second look at the picture before you read further. Is that a male or a female protagonist? Do you see YOURSELF in it?

There are times in our life when we ask some difficult to answer questions of ourselves. Who am I? Why was I born? What am I supposed to do with my life? How can I make a success of my life? What are my value systems? What motivates me? What influence do I have on others? If you haven’t asked these questions of yourself perhaps this is the best time to ponder over them. The answers will become the blueprint for you to create yourself anew!

No matter what your age, gender, background or status in life you can still improve, grow, change and create the person you want to be. Here is how you go about it.

Think out of the box – Either due to peer pressure or a lack of self confidence, most of us have trodden the beaten path, often to our omnipresent regret. So now is the time to dust the cobwebs in the mind, crank up the shaft of imagination and get the engine of life started. You should now identify your passions, imagine varied possibilities, visualize the happiness you can embrace and try to touch the pot of gold at the end of that imaginative rainbow. To make it more meaningful channelize your imagination into broad categories. It could be categories like personal happiness, comfort and security, my indulgences, philanthropic initiatives etc or it could be simply personal goals, financial goals, professional goals, self growth goals etc.

Sketch your own blueprint – Now that you have imagined it and possibly embraced and touched your dreams figuratively, it is time you actually sketched it out literally and figuratively. This goes a little beyond writing down your goals and is not so difficult to sketch, just in case you are worried that you are no Picasso. All you need to do is take the effort of identifying specifics about your dream and you can either physically create a dream book or have it done as a PPT. The key is to get the specifics clearly visualized. E.g. Don’t say I have a dream car that I hope to own  but instead find the picture of your dream car and paste it.

Assemble the resources needed– If you have started on your dream book or the dream PPT, you have assembled the most crucial resource. If you haven’t done this, stop reading further and at least open a new PPT and call it MY Dream Outline. The key resource that actually limits our dreams from taking wings is financial security; either lack of resources or the fear of going bust. So think long and hard on how best you can cope with this uncertainty. Jot this down too for now you have begun to assemble the brick and mortar required to give concrete shape to your personal blueprint. Now that you have got the right start don’t get bogged down by self doubt, fear of failure, lack of motivation, criticism or any form of negativity from forces within or outside. E.g. If you have identified that being a Chef is your dream but your family consists entirely of engineers, once you have put pictures of dreams menus, dream kitchen, the chef coat and perhaps even your dream eatery you will reinforce your self belief.

Begin from anywhere but begin – Lethargy and self doubt often paralyze good intention. They bring about rigor mortis in the living. The most common excuse for not giving life to your good intentions is that you do not know where to begin. Ever tried pushing a stationary car? It is tough to get it moving but once it gets the initial thrust it is easy to push it. The same principle of physics applies to life too. So the stress must be on beginning. Then keep that momentum going somehow. Look at the picture above and you will notice that the protagonist is sketching the left leg even though the right feet is still undone despite the rest of the right leg being fleshed out.

Give it the finishing touch with love – Sometimes we fail to live upto our expectations and it can deflate our ego / self confidence at other times we get irritated and frustrated and occasionally we just get over with the challenge we set ourselves as an antidote to our feeling of being a failure. No matter where we are in the continuum of our pursuit, the outcome even if half done must measure up to our standards of excellence. This is possible only if we enjoy what we do and inject a healthy dose of love in to doing what we want to succeed in. e.g. list out those tasks that are terribly boring for you but inevitable.  Now visualize yourself doing an excellent job of the task and do it with that spirit. You will find a marked improvement in the end result. To give you a more tangible example have you ever gone through the process of covering your younger sibling or children’s school notebooks. After some time it is get boring, tedious and frustrating. If you simply see each neatly covered book as a a thing of beauty or if you can see the joy of the child when he/ she sees the neat pile of books your output will be fabulous.

Try this:

  1. Identify 3 tasks that your mom or best friend does exceedingly well but something you haven’t ever tried. Your challenge is to attempt each of these tasks over the next 2 weeks and show improvement in each attempt.
  2. Try and make a kite and try to fly it along with a group of children. (Ideally I suggest you try and make more than 1 kite so that you have one or two more spare kites just in case the first one gets cut loose or torn)
  3. Write down what you would do with the following sums of money
  • If you had 1 USD
  • If you had 100 USD
  • If you had 1000 USD
  • If you had 10,000 USD
  • If you had 1,00,000 USD

Launching yourself

13-9- One step back 2 forward

It is that time of the year when the exam fever is at its peak and both students and parents are in a tizzy coping with the stress of doing well in the exams. The real stress actually comes a wee bit later as the day of the results draws near. While for some there could be jubilation, for a fair amount of people there could be dejection but the vast majority would be plagued by a sinking feeling that the outcome could have been or should have been better. An analysis would possibly reveal that an overwhelming majority are disappointed that the outcomes fell short of their expectations. In effect just about everyone seems to think that the academic pursuits have actually dragged them back or atleast impeded them in the race to a successful future.

The scene with the adults is no different. On one hand they seem to be dragged down by the weight of propping up their wards to excel, they also are bogged down by the pressure to attain personal success professionally, financially, personally and socially. Many a time, success seems elusive, the goals seem distant and the pressure becomes overwhelming. The collective weight of balancing personal expectations, professional growth and domestic bliss seem to be huge load to manage. Often we are tempted to throw in the towel and give up; our spirits are drooping and the rewards seem unappetizing.

Yet it is at the very nadir that one must dig his /her heels in, take a deep breath and with faith and hope launch a herculean effort. Be it an arrow, a trigger or a shotput; to get results we need to take that vital pull back to get the momentum to hit the mark. Take a look at a pole vaulter and notice the sharp arch of the pole brought about by the weight of the individual before the momentum and the technique dramatically enables the pole valuter to go much higher than the pole and safely cross over the barrier. The subtle message is that one often needs to take one step back before one can take two steps forward.

Success is often like a game of snakes and ladders. There are times when we get lucky and climb up faster but many a time we get gobbled up by the snake and come right down. Do we stop playing the game every time we get gobbled by a snake? The challenge in real life is not to let the snakes, be it poor academics or a personal handicap or poor self esteem or financial setbacks or a colossal blunder, become an excuse to give up.

Try this:

  1. Go to a long jump pit and stand at the edge and jump. Have 3 tries and measure the best effort. Now walk back 10 steps and then run down and jump and measure the distance. You can be sure the latter effort where you actually walked back, away from the pit and then gave it your all gave you superlative jump.
  2. Find out the personal limitations / failures that the following overcame before they achieved success

Oh this is me !

13-7-Oh this is me

First read the words above again and then proceed to read further with a smile on your face for you have discovered your true self now. Not just you but check with family and friends and you will find that each one of them will identify with the above reality. The pain, sufferings and mistakes are often the first thing that we recollect when we try to rationalize our journey thus far.  The successes we have enjoyed, the achievements and accolades received are often seen as insignificant compared to the effort, the hurdles and problems that we have battled. Yet, we would in rare moments of candidness, admit that the journey thus far has been worth it for it made us better, more resilient and definitely proud of ourselves.

The reality is that almost everyone feels that he/ she could have done a lot better if only…

  • We worked harder
  • We were a wee bit luckier
  • We had the daring to follow our heart
  • Were a wee bit more patient
  • Could control our emotions and manage relationships better etc.

Since the past cannot be undone, there is little to gain by ruing over it. Yet, by our very nature we tend to lapse into ruminations about the past, particularly those events/ situations that we wish could be undone. That is when, we need to be more pragmatic, be more optimistic and seek out the blessings that every experience has given us.  To begin with, you are alive and well enough to still influence the course of your life and destiny.  No matter what your age, what your social or economic background or what your education is, hope exits as long as there is life.

Here are 3 steps to lead a more fulfilling and rewarding life

Map your coordinates. Do a realistic assessment of your personal, financial, career related and social status. This could involve deep thinking, extensive note making and should ideally also include free and frank discussions with family and friends.  Do not shy away from noting the negatives, the concerns that need to be addressed and the occasional candid but unpleasant feedback you get.

Adjust your compass. If mapping the coordinates felt like a burden, adjusting the compass is sheer torture. This is because for once you have to purposefully look to the future with hope and fortitude but with the baggage of the coordinates grounding you to reality. So while we may have fanciful ideas, imagine pots of gold at the end of the illusionary rainbow we fancy, the path would we long winded, uphill and rocky. The secret lies in generating enough passion within yourself to sustain and motivate you to that goal.

Proceed purposefully. Once the goal is clear and the current coordinates established no matter how far the goal is we need to proceed with hope, determination and joy. While hope kindles the spirit, determination propels is in the journey and it is the joy in the journey that makes the effort easier and smoother.

Look in the mirror and do you see a more confident you?  If you have cone thus far, there is nothing that can stop you now from attaining your goals.  Keep striding , striving and succeeding !

Go in front of the mirror and try to get the following expressions on your face

  • Happiness
  • Anger
  • Disgust
  • Frustration
  • Pain
  • Irritation
  • Coyness
  • Indifference

(How tough or easy was it for you to do it? Do you have a better appreciation of the job of an actor/ actress when they have to emote on screen? Do you think you can do a better job of emoting in front of the mirror if you had a situation or scene or script to give you an authentic setting for the emotions to be expressed? Do you think that script is equally to the Compass for an actor?)

Set yourself free

13-1-Set yourself free_life

With the start of a new year, we can begin afresh, leaving behind both the troubles and the accolades of the past year behind. While the past will always be lurking in the deep recess of our minds, the future invariably gives us hope but is largely tempered by apprehensions born out of a wild imagination. The present then is squeezed between nostalgia and apprehension, your hopes and your despairs and your dreams and your nightmares. The only way out is to set yourself free; free of your own self imposed bondage.

Here is how you go about setting yourself free

Find a purpose for yourself. Parental expectations during our formative years have a large bearing in how we visualize a future for ourselves. However, the individuality in you often feels stifled and throttled by having to toe a line drawn by others. However perilous a course we chart for ourselves, if we focus on our goal our journey would be more meaningful, more fulfilling and definitely more liberating.

Tip: Write an epitaph for yourself and you would have the purpose of your life outlined clearly.

Reward yourself. We often ourselves overburdened, stressed and running to stay ahead in pursuit of our goals. It is as if the world is examining us with a microscope and we need to do meet their expectations. The reality is you have to pace yourself not with the benchmarks set by others but in relation to our own abilities, potential and capabilities.. This invariably means that you have to reward yourself; be it by taking breaks, indulging in something off beat, taking your foot off the gas pedal or simply lounging around and clearing your mind.

Tip: The key is not how far you go but how much you have enjoyed the journey.

Explore beyond yourself. Time to change your routine. Give yourself a new makeup. If you have been following the beaten path, pause, think of the numerous possibilities that you have failed to explore. Have you wanted to try your hand at something off beat? Ever tried bungee jumping or rock climbing or scuba diving? Ever had the urge to learn a musical instrument or act in a play? Did you always have a social service streak that you never dared to try so far?

Tip: There is nothing stopping you except your inhibitions and possibly your inertia.

Excuse yourself.

Notice that at every stage you are doing what you have planned for yourself, without being weighed down by the expectations, the hopes, the plans and the aspirations others have for you. It is possible that in the process you would have stumbled, bruised yourself, suffered criticism, wondered if you made a mistake and worse of all get the sinking feeling that you should not have dared to move out of your comfort zone. Learn to excuse yourself no matter what the consequence of your personal, calculated and deliberate actions.

Tip : Since you chose to follow your heart and mind you should allow your heart and mind to be free of any guilt.

It is your life – set it free – find the YOU within YOUrself.

Try this:

  • List out 5 of your apprehensions/ fears. Now for each of them work out a way to actually confront your fear. E.g. You fear lizards. Now find a reptile zoo that you can visit to actually confront that fear. Don’t do it because it is suggested here but because you want to overcome those fears.
  • List out 5 of your greatest desires or wishes. Now for each of them work out a way to actually realize them. E.g. You want to go on a cruise. Now read up on all the cruises. Select one that seems to catch your imagination. Slowly but deliberately start working on the finances, the dates, the preparations etc. for it. Before you realize it you would be packing your bags to realize your dreams.

The way to change MYSELF

There is plenty of free advice floating around, most of it liberally dished out by ordinary folks who believe they have a solution to everyone else’s problem. Sadly in most cases if the problem is closer home, perhaps at the doorsteps of those who dish out these pearls of wisdom, they would grapple to come to grips with it. This sound ironic considering how appropriate the advice sounded for someone else but alas its potency seemed to vanish when a inch of it is applied at home. The conclusion that one can draw is that any advice given must first be tried and tested by those giving it before it is freely distributed around.

Here are four situations in the average person’s life where advice is often sought and given but rarely digested in the same form if the giver of the advice has to digest it himself// herself

Parenting and the generation gap. Each successive generation grapples with the problem of handling the younger generation. Each generation also gets ample advice from the previous generation most of which is very sound and based on good experience. The problem is that there is still a huge gap between us and the next generation which we normally try to rationalize and explain failing which we emotionalize the issue and pressurize. What we fail to understand is that we need to change with the times and adapt to the ways of a changing younger generation.

Facing the humdrum of everyday life. The daily grind of work that is the destiny of every individual rich or poor, young or old, healthy or sick often gets monotonous and boring. For others we would suggest a variety of solutions to cope with this situation. We could suggest job rotation, brining about variety in the job, finding creative ways to do the repetitive job, looking out for intrinsic motivations and where possible change jobs. The very same advice somehow seems to lose its charm, its appeal and its magic properties when we attempt to charge up our own monotonous everyday life. A major reason for this is our coziness and comfort of aligning with the known devil rather than risking it with a new devil as a result of which the very advice we give others ends up being impotent and ineffective to rescue us from the hellish rigors of daily life.

Managing life changing challenges. Change comes in many forms. While the furious pace of technological and scientific changes eases life in many ways mastering their functionality can be quite a change to manage. Remember the first time one tried to master the mouse on the computer. Imagine the challenge for those in the older age bracket.  More difficult are the emotional changes that challenge us be it death of a loved one, breakdown of relationships, pain of separation, job loss and the challenges caused by ill health and related trauma. Our problem is our inability to adopt and embrace the advent of technology and make peace with the upheavals brought about by the emotional changes.

Bidding good bye to life. Each of us comes with our expiry date stamped and hardcoded in our destiny. Yet being prepared to accept that reality is an extremely painful and heart wrenching prospect. Anxieties are passe…

One of the real reasons that we are not as effective as we could be is the fact that we are constantly distracted by our anxieties and cannot focus on what we ought to do. While it is only human to take on the tensions and anxieties what is important is to ensure that we try an address the issues without getting obsessed by it. Depending on the nature of the anxiety and the person’s temperament, each person has a different method of handling and coping with anxieties. Some bottle up their feelings, others tell all and sundry; some others feel restless and nervous while others simply go into a shell and avoid all forms of interaction. There would be others who will get aggressive and loud mouthed while others will silently scheme and plot to extract their pound of flesh. What is common is that most people will walk around with their anxieties firmly entrenched in their psyche.

It is not easy to overcome the trauma and nervousness of an impending problem and a prolonged wait leads to panic and anxiety. Under such circumstances the psychological trauma can manifest itself in varied forms of behavioral and physical problems including illness. The good news though is that there is nothing really permanent in this world and so all our fears and anxieties too will come to an end sooner or later. This is a great realization and the sooner we are able to comprehend it, the easier it will be for us to divert our attention to more pleasant thoughts of forthcoming happy occasions, events and possibilities. Focusing on the positives not only calms us down but gives us a motivation to look forward to the morrow.

When we are faced with a problem, the best recourse is to accept it and meet it with a clam and optimistic outlook. Let us assume that you have made a critical error in an important report that you have submitted to top management. While the consequences can be very sever, by not owning up and having the courage to tell management about the error we are simply prolonging our agony, and worse still not giving management a chance to do damage control. In other extreme cases where the problem is beyond redemption as would be the case if someone close to you is diagnosed as having an advanced stage of cancer, we need to get over our shock quickly and then work on minimizing the impact of that news. We can prepare the patient to face the reality, get the family ready to accept the harsh truth and at the same time make arrangements to have the best possible treatment so that the suffering and pain is minimized for all.

Anxiety indicates panic and turbulence. By minimizing anxiety we can get ourselves to think more clearly and rationally and look at the positives that are there waiting to be discovered. It also help us accept the reality more calmly, see the truth more candidly and fortify ourself spiritually, mentally emotionally and physically.

Remember: “Anxiety is the rust of life, destroying its brightness and weakening its power. A childlike and abiding trust in Providence is its best preventive and remedy.”

Try this:

  1. When you study your daily ‘To Do’ list, invariably there will some tasks that you despise. Begin your day by tackling those tasks first and notice how relaxed you feel after that.
  2. Outline your 5 worst fears in life. E.g Bankruptcy, Death of a loved one etc. Now rationally look at each and see what is the probability of each of it occurring. Also examine the precautions one can take to minimize the chances of facing such a situation. Work on those precautions at the earliest.

Be self reliant…

The best place to find a helping hand is at the end of your own arm. Swedish proverb

Far too often, the one reason we are unable to realize our full potential is sheer laziness.  Our lethargy, casualness, indifference and tardiness are all the myriad outcomes of a lazy self. We can camouflage our laziness under various garbs of tiredness, non availability of tools for the job, lack of skill and / or knowledge about the job or simply blame our forgetfulness. However, we might fool the world with these lame excuses but we cannot fool ourselves with it; after all we have a conscience that never sleeps and is well aware of the reality.

There are times when we are so used to getting help that we look askance when no help is seen around. We are flummoxed as to how and why no help is around and shocked at the possibility that we have to roll up our sleeves and do the job ourselves. Our egos may not permit us to do what we think is a menial job by our living standards or worse still ignore some jobs in the fond hope that someone else will do it. The truth is that what needs to be done has to be done and it is best that we do it ourselves if we want the work done on time and done efficiently. Pause for a moment and think of the attributes needed to do a job. Most jobs that are routine just need a wee bit of common sense and the ability to dirty your hands. More specialized jobs may require some basic training.

One reason for increased laziness is the pampering of the growing up children by very protective parents, who either do the job themselves or have hired hands to do it. The other reason is the psychology of the people who believe that if they earn they can always hire help. The lure of more relaxed and agreeable activities like watching TV /partying/ reading etc. give us pleasure with little effort and so the more boring jobs are outsourced if possible. Laziness is also the outcome of our own low standards which in effect mean we just do enough to get by. In real life though all the good days will come to an end sooner or later for when we depend on others, we are falling into a trap called ‘ Laziness’ and the only cure for it is ‘Desperation’. Take the case of a rich young man who is overweight. He has no option but to exercise and diet both of which he cannot outsource. This leads to desperation and this will trigger hard work. Or when is stuck in an airport or railway station and there is a strike by the porters, out of sheer desperation you will have to carry your heavy luggage and make your way to your destination.

It is interesting to note a very apt observation by Bishop Fulton Sheen ‘ who observed that there are things that only you can do be it blowing your nose or saying your prayers. So on that prayerful note, I leave you to work out the answer to the question ‘ Who can help me?Read the first line of this post again, just in case you are groping for the answer!

Remember: “Don’t pray for lighter burdens, but for stronger backs.”

Try these:

  1. Give your mother/ spouse a break. Don’t wait for mother’s day or her birthday for such a break. Just surprise them by taking over their tasks and doing it with a smile on your face and a lots of love in your heart. ( please ensure that if you are cooking don’t mess up the kitchen so bad, that it is double trouble for the person whom you are trying to please.)
  2. Right now list 5 things that you have postponed doing for over 2 months simply because you have lots of excuses to keep it pending. Put a time frame to do it ( not later than 2 weeks) and ensure that all the 5 activities are completed in that time frame. Repeat the activity every quarter so that in no time there are no pending jobs.
