24- 8 Jul 17- Create your own rainbowWith the monsoons already arriving, most days seem like Monday’s; dull, gloomy and too tempting to laze around in bed. Yet, it is time to get up and get going and the process is just a tad too boring and uninspiring. Just as the wonders of the rainbow appear in the monsoon, await the rainbow each day and there would perhaps also be a pot of gold at the end of it to lure you to energetically look forward to each day.

Look for things that brighten the day – it could be the chirping of the birds, the sunlight that is streaming in, the laughter of children playing, the pealing of the temple and/or church bells. The key is to look for things that make you happy, contented and peaceful. It is a proactive responsibility that you must take on in order to change your own world.

See the variety of positives that you are blessed with – Make a conscious effort to over look  the hurt, the pain, the sadness of the past and instead focus on the blessings you have been bestowed. Good health tops the list, financial security, a loving world of family and friends, the comfort of a blessed home perhaps and a secure job too maybe.

Smile, forgive, listen, appreciate, thank – This is such an easy formula to memorize; a tough one to put in practice but the easiest to embrace once you have consciously adopted it. Each of it helps you exhale the toxic within and inhale the pure clean emotions.

Embrace love, laughter, hope and faith – Just as a good diet and exercise is a choice you make, add a heap full of love, a ton of laughter, perennial hope and unwavering faith to your daily mantra. You will find yourself empowered, optimistic and energetic to make your presence felt in the world and to make a positive difference around you.

Spend time with family, nature, self – Since we are social animals, we need to connect with other,  the world around and with ourselves. Spend time with family and friends. Spread good cheer and goodwill amongst them. They would seek to spend more time with you. Nature helps us embrace the spectrum of life; the flora and fauna, the sheer variety of wildlife and the beauty of the hills and valleys, the rivers and the seas, the changing seasons. Spend time thinking, reflecting and connecting to inner self. Never forget you are world yourself; filled with emotions, thoughts, feelings and passion.

Find silence despite the noise, find order despite the chaos and discover peace within despite the turbulence around –  Life is full of noise, chaos and turbulence. In our journey through life, we must be able to filter out and choose everything that would make our journey more pleasant, comfortable and enjoyable. Learn to enjoy silence; then you will master the art of finding it despite the noise around. Like getting through a maze, look hard at the chaos around; anger, frustration, hurt are some  feelings that you need to get past before you get out of the maze and reach peace, tranquility and bliss.

Look back with fondness, look forward with hope and be awake in the present Every day there must be something pleasant to reminiscence about, a goal set to give meaning and purpose to each day and one must make each moment count by being mentally and physically alert and active.

Notice how you have created a beautiful rainbow for yourself. The success, satisfaction, happiness, contentment and the peace that you get is the pot full of gold at the end of your rainbow.

Try these

  • List out 3- 5 colors that you like.  Look around you and for each color you chose, write down at least 2 objects having that color. Did you notice the color of those objects earlier. Do you notice the rainbow of colors around you?
  • Sit with your eyes closed for 5 minutes. Identify the various noises around you. Also imagine the aroma of your favorite food. Can you feel the rainbow of myriad sounds and aroma that you normally take for granted.

13-32-My wish for the New Year 2014It has been 4 years since I first started writing this blog and it has been a roller coaster ride with both highs and lows. The slow but steady increase in number of posts(485 posts), number of views (over 1,97,000), number of followers (over 1050) and the encouraging feedback from blog readers have been real highs for me. The occasional confrontation with writer’s block, the challenge of keeping up with the standards set and the gaps in feedback or slow pace of views at times have been the lows. However, each of you reading this post and particularly the followers of the blog who get the posts in their email inbox deserve my special thanks for the support and encouragement I have derived because of them.

The post today is for each of you with my hearty wishes for the New Year 2014 and beyond.

Comfort – Each day is a new day with a fresh set of challenges, problems and opportunities. Don’t let go the opportunities but should you miss them don’t brood over it too much. On the other hand if troubles seem to shadow you may you take comfort in the realization that ‘ this too shall pass’.

Smiles – They say a SMILE is a curve that sets everything straight. Go on and smile away your blues, your temporary worries and your toughest challenges. A smile is the quickest way to reach to people and to reach into your own heart and feel blissful. (Click on this link to know more about how a SMILE can make a huge difference to you http://www.poweract.blogspot.in/2010/01/smile.html )

Rainbows – After a heavy downpour we are often fascinated by the sight of the majestic rainbow in all its splendid colors. It is also believed that there is proverbial pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. So wait and seek that rainbow when things don’t go the way you want it to; perhaps you will also find more than just the rainbow and get lucky with that pot of gold.

Laughter – Laugh and the world laughs with you. Bet each of you would love to have more company, plenty of friends and definitely hoping to have a rocking time. The secret to all that is being joyful and spreading good cheer and the quick fix is simply hearty laughter.

Sunsets – There is romantic tinge to sunsets and as you watch the slow sunset in the distant horizon, the physically darkness that follows actually allows you to experience the bliss of a happy ending and would leave you with a warm feeling of accomplishment.

Hugs – Be it a hearty greeting or a moment of heartfelt sympathy, both these extreme emotions are best expressed with a hug. The touch and intimacy convey far more meaning than anything that a wordsmith can conjure up.

Beauty – Far too often our eyes seem to be riveted on the misery, dirt and squalor around us. Alas there is also ample beauty around us that we take for granted be it the tapestry of religious, cultural and ethnic diversity  or the wonders of human evolution be it in the form of dressing, culinary art, physical art, prose and poetry. Nothing beats the beauty of the natural beauty around us be it the flora and fauna, the landscape, the creatures of the world or simply our own fellow human beings. Seek and you shall find – Beauty to warm your hearts and life your spirits.

Friendships – He / she is poor who is alone, friendless and unloved. Friendships are the outcome of a social need, a commonality of understanding and respect and is the essence of human evolution. Friendships nurture social interaction, evolution of communities and personal growth.

Faith – Faith overcomes fears; after all FAITH is Finding Answers In The Heart ( Click on this link to know more about FAITH http://www.poweract.blogspot.in/2010/01/faith.html )

Confidence – You are committed to whatever you do when you have the confidence in yourself and in what you do. Confidence comes from self belief, purpose and determination.

Courage – It takes courage to accept your faults, listen to your critics and to follow your heart. With courage you can only grow better, bigger and brighter.

Patience – If you have read so far, you are blessed with patience; a virtue that will open your eyes to the wonders of new revelations and fresh opportunities.

Love – It encompasses life in its entirety. First love yourself, warts and all. Next love those around you and finally love the world around you. Guess what? What goes around comes around and you will always be ensconced in LOVE

 Try this:

  1. Find out innovative ways of using the above blessings to cheer up a close friend, a total stranger, a person in another town/ country.
  2. Use the gifts of faith, confidence, courage and patience to explore a new hobby, a new exotic place and a new technology that you have been avoiding.

All the wonders you seek are within yourself. Sir Thomas Brown

A common problem that plagues many people is their inability to believe that they have potential far in excess of what they really use. Our inability to discover these hidden gems of personal potential and power within us arises from the fact that we are constantly seeking answers to our troubles around us and not delving within ourselves.  So our restlessness comes not from lack of resources but our failure to harness the resources we are blessed with. Today we shall attempt to identify a few of the possible gems that we posses but what we have not fully leveraged.

Self belief. An individual learns to appreciate the uniqueness and individuality of the person he or she is. This will automatically instill within one a sense of self worth, propel one to believe that he/ she can contribute to the world around in ample measure and kindle a burning desire to make best use of one’s talents, abilities and personality. Once a person begins to believe in himself/ herself, the stage is set for them to overcome their inhibitions, ignite their ambitions and impact the world and society around.

Imagination. While thinking is an integral part of the natural process of human evolution, being imaginative requires one to stretch the boundaries of rationality and logic. It involves risking ridicule, being criticized and being different from the crowd. Imagination requires freedom from convention, giving wings to soar beyond the horizons and seeing things completely different from what the world at large sees. Visit an exhibition of modern art to discover your own limitations in imagination.

Motivation. Desire makes one hungry for achievement and plants the seeds of motivation within us. Yet motivation often tapers off if it is not nourished with the bait of some worthwhile goal, the applause from within one’s own heart and encouragement every step of the way.

Patience. Giving up, getting frustrated and flying of the handle are symptomatic of the evils of a fast paced world. Cultivating the virtue of patience is in itself a huge task for this needs one to modify ones behaviour, alter one’s temperament and control one’s emotions.  Yet if one were to observe a child learning to walk, we would realize that we too have traversed that slow and frustrating way and persisted with patience.

Laughter. Nothing amplifies the human spirit in all its dazzling splendor as much as laughter. It is an upliftment of mind, body and spirit with no inhibition, absolute delight and pure ecstasy. Laugh and the world laughs with you; that is one time you can be sure you are never alone.

Enthusiasm. Enthusiasm begins with hope, continues with faith and sustains itself with cheerful, patient, imaginative self belief.  Unless a person is enthusiastic action will never be fully effective.  Enthusiasm nourishes the spirit, abets action and zooms in on success.

It is actually quite simple to discover these gems within you – for each of the first alphabets of the points above combine to make it SIMPLE.

Remember: Once we believe in ourselves, we can risk curiosity, wonder, spontaneous delight, or any experience that reveals the human spirit. e. e. cummings

Action Points:

  1. Have a look at this  PPT   seven_wonders_we posses to appreciate wonders of this world as seen by a young kid.
  2. List out at least 2 points from the above which you are very confident are your natural strengths and outline another 3 more positive gems that you posses e.g. Being organized,  punctuality, quick decision maker etc.
  3. Try and write a couple of your acronyms eg. SMILE – See My Instant Life Energizer and/ or Attempt to write a  limerick (if you do not know what that is prove to yourself that you are motivated and enthusiastic to find out about it)

Humor acts to relieve fear.  Dr. William F. Fry, Jr.

One of the best antidotes for fear is humor. A good laugh always tends to lighten the environment; takes one’s mind of the worries even if it is for a few minutes and above all helps us see life in a lighter vein. The wonder of humor is that it is unique to the human race and there are varieties of humor that one can appreciate. Good clean humor is often contrasted by crass humor, there could be slapstick humor that is contrasted by the more restrained tongue in cheek variety. There could be play with puns, a twist in the tale type humor, sarcsism a dangerous type of humor and simple jokes that play on images and vivid distortions of real life.

It takes a lot of courage to be able to see the lighter side of life when life poses life threatening challenges. What we really fail to appreciate is the reality that the good times and the bad times are both just temporary and that soon it will pass too. In fact, whatever our problems, once we have the right attitude to see things in a positive way, we would soon see the bright side of life. This means we can even joke about catastrophe and death without the fear or guilt. The wonder of life is in the reality that even a pauper can see the humorous moments in life and laugh forgetting all his/ her worries and cares.  It shines in the gags of a comedian when taking on the glum business of death and it peaks when a  person on death bed can wipe away the tears of his/ her loved ones with a witty one liner.

There is a danger in humor too. Humor when misunderstood could create a big wedge in a wonderful relationship. In fact, a joke gone too far and too wrong can create a wedge in the deepest of friendships and unless both parties sober down and pardon one another and clear the air, humor can actually trigger fear of more misunderstandings. Sarcasm is an extremely dangerous type of humor. If not handled carefully it can hurt deeply and create wedge that could be near impossible to patch up again. The problem with sarcsism is that it cuts through sharply and deeply because the joke is on an individual and the world a laughs loudly and heartily at the poor individuals expense.

Your life is really enriched if you have a sense of humor and can lighten the air around no matter what the situation. If not, the next best thing is to ensure you have at least one good friend with a good sense of humor who will their wit and repartee, never let the bitterness of the moment or the misery of the occasion overwhelm those present. Actually if one were to study the acronym FEAR, the irony of it won’t be lost on us for it reads False Evidence Appearing Real….can things get funnier than that?

Remember: “A person without a sense of humor is like a wagon without springs. It’s jolted by every pebble on the road.”  Henry Ward Beecher

Try this:

  1. Pick up some of the good humorous books and enjoy the laughs. If you like animals and love humor do try the book My Family and other Animals by Gerard Durell. You can also try any of the books by James Herriot like All Creatures Great and Small etc. You can also try some of Mark Twain’s books or some of the P.G.Woodhouse books. You have to find your own brand of humor and the books that fit into it.
  2. The Readers Digest is a wonderful source for a wide variety of humor. You can pick up any copy old or new and enjoy the wonderful humor that is clean, entertaining and often very real life.

Were it not for my little jokes, I could not bear the burdens of this office. Abraham Lincoln

The challenge that life often puts before us is one of differentiating between the serious tasks and the joys of living. Most times we need to be focused on our goals and seriously pursue our specific assignments. This can be both stressful and also critical which makes the job on hand look even more daunting and challenging. However within the confines of the regimented work life we need to find our own space to unwind and distress. While communication with co workers and the various tea and lunch breaks do provide some much needed relief far too often the weight of the deadlines and the pressure of pending work overwhelm us.

Amidst the chaos of balancing deadlines and the quirks of daily living, we need to find our own space and diversions so as to soothe our nerves, relax our minds and rejuvenate ourselves to face the new onslaught of work. Laughter in any form is sure shot remedy that frees us of tensions, allows us the luxury of briefly forgetting our pressures and provides the balm for nerves. We need to find humor in the work environment, share a joke or two with colleagues and let our hair down with some practical tomfoolery and backslapping. The commonly practiced Friday casual dressing is an institutionalized method of helping one distress even though one is working.  The team building and bonding exercises and the corporate parties organized for team members are other such techniques that have evolved in order to help people cope with the daily grind.

However the real challenge is for each of us to find our own styles of relaxation so that we can chill out and reduce our work tensions. While some of us pursue hobbies others seek to find solace in contemplation and meditation.  However the people, who are most relaxed and yet fairly productive are those who can crack jokes, laugh at jokes cracked at their expense and people who can always see the lighter side of even the worst situation. Often they are the focal point of all enthusiastic activity for they transmit their energy to all around. They are natural motivators and cheerleaders who can lift drooping spirits and draw out the best from each one. They also have an infinite capacity to absorb bad news calmly and see the bright side of it. Anyone who can laugh at a good joke even if the joke is on him/ her is truly the most stress free person.

Remember: You can turn painful situations around through laughter. If you can find humor in anything, even poverty, you can survive it.”  Bill Cosby

Try this:

  1. Make an attempt to recount 3 of your favorite jokes to your friends and family. Ideal it should be clean and healthy humor that you can repeat to your family and kids. See the reactions of those who listen to your jokes. If they don’t laugh uproariously then you need to practice telling your jokes again.
  2. Think of some of the most horrible experiences you have had. The challenge for you is to think again and find out the humors side of those incidents. Eg. A friend and I met with a motor cycle accident and we were taken to hospital. The friend was withering with pain for he had hurt both hands. I was too shell shocked and hurt on one arm and leg and had a stiff neck. On reaching the hospital my friend was put on a stretcher while I was hobbling along. It was only after the duty doctor in the casualty had a good look at both he ordered my friend to stand up and go walking to the Operation Theater while he forcefully insisted that I lay down on the stretcher since he realized that I had a hairline fracture on the collar bone in addition to the one on my leg and hand and was more seriously injured than my friend.
