Four point transformation

29-four-point-transformationEach of us is seeking ways and means of transforming our life into something more glorious. We try to change our personalities, we seek good counsel, we attempt to add more formal and informal education to our CV . We even attempt to convolute our entire being into an artificial person that we cannot identify with. The efforts are laudable; the outcome may often fall short of our expectations. A simpler way would be, to attempt and imbibe the following four points in our daily life and that could be the beginning, of an entirely new chapter in your life.

Attract what you expect – No matter what the situation, it pays to be optimistic, positive and motivated for they tend to attract success. It is good to visualize vividly your goals, your plans, your future for that is when you begin to identify happenings and situations that will set you on the path that you want to go. E.g. assume you want to own a car. Think of the make and color of the car. Soon you will begin to notice that, you tend to be spotting exactly the same type of car more often on the roads. It is just that you are goal focused and hence tend to overlook all other vehicles that you are not interested in.

Reflect what you desire So what is it that you passionately desire? How can you achieve those desires? Nothing comes easy, but every small step you take, will take you closer to realizing your dreams and desires. You can seek status/ wealth / academic excellence/  a successful career / a perfect spouse or a wonderful parent. No matter what you desire, your actions / your attitude / your behavior/ your ethics and your passion need to reflect your desires. E.g. You have to display leadership skills if you want to be taken seriously as a potential leader or you cannot become a wonderful parent unless you spend ample time with your children.

Become what you respect – Who are the people you respect? What is it about them that you admire and acknowledge? Their personal values, their communication style, their ability to put people at ease, their discipline, their attention to details etc. could be some of traits that make them well respected and admired by society. It is upto you, to work hard and change yourself, by imbibing some of these well respected qualities and traits. You will soon evolve to become an individual whose traits, values and style get approval of others and you start gaining their confidence and respect. E.g. Once you let it be known that you respect time and are a stickler for time by attending meetings or keeping appointments, people will begin to respect you for your commitment and  your value of time.

Mirror what you admire – It is said that imitation is the best form of flattery. Most times though we tend to imitate or mirror the style statement of celebrities, ape the playing style of our sporting heroes or tend to be part of the current trends. While some of these could be useful, what we must never ignore is to identify the traits, the values and the spirit that many of our heroes and favorite celebrities posses. Their work ethics, for example, could be the key to their success. Possibly their discipline and their ability to evolve with the times give them that extra edge to succeed. Identify these wholesome qualities that you admire and make that part of your style too.

Try these:

Be honest to yourself and answer how you would react in the following situations:

  • You have studied hard for an exam but unfortunately the paper is very tough. Unless you pass the paper you may lose a year. You notice that the student in front of you seems to be answering well and you can copy from his/ her paper. What will you do?
  • You find a lost wallet containing a large sum of money in it. There is no identification of the owner of the wallet. What would you do?
  • You have to tell your principal which of the two people has committed some terrible mischief. The person who has done the deed is your closest buddy but the other accused is the class bully and you dislike him immensely and have some scores to settle with him. What response would you give your principal?
  • You have entrusted some valuables including a family heirloom with a friend’s friend, when you and your friend had to suddenly go out of town. On coming back the person with whom you had kept the valuables says that he/she is unable to locate the same despite trying their best to locate it. You are distraught and want to file a police complaint. Your friend is adamant that you should not file that police complaint since it would tarnish the other friends’ reputation. What would you do?

List out some of the traits / values you respect in the following persons:

  • Your favorite teacher
  • Your dad or mum or sibling
  • Your favorite uncle/ aunt /neighbor
  • Your colleague / friend
  • A celebrity you admire
  • A well known character from history.

Encouragement does wonders

“A word of encouragement during a failure is worth more than an hour of praise after success”

One of the casualties of intense competition are the school going children who are constantly prodded by parents to excel at examinations. While it is necessary to ensure that the children study hard and do well in the exams, matters become absurd when parents want their wards to top in all the subjects and focus attention on academics at the cost of sacrificing their games and extracurricular activities. The ultimate damage is done when parents instead of appreciating the success of the youngsters dwell on them having missed on a few marks, find fault with the method of study or berate the children for being careless and or not putting in as much effort as required. It is this irrational criticism that stresses out the children for they would have sought praise for their efforts and encouragement for their performance even if it fell marginally short of expectations.

Over an extended period of time we tend to perfect the art of finding fault, being critical and wantonly berating subordinates in  particular, under the mistaken notion that ‘fear is the key’ to discipline, performance improvement and productivity. While some of these techniques would have some positive effect, the negativity that permeates this approach makes it a very questionable tactics when the chips are down.  On the other hand lavish encouragement and tempered praise would restore self belief, enhance confidence and plant the seeds of positive thinking which can then go on to be the bedrock on which to build success. Often a good mentor or coach will strategically resort to this style especially when things seem hopeless for at the stage human frailty would tempt one to throw in the towel. A good dose of encouragement actually pumps up the recipients, rejuvenates them and they are boosted in their intent and then‘ fortune often favors the brave’

 It is well worth pondering that ‘success is never final and failure never fatal’. Unless we can appreciate the profound truth in this statement, the approach taken would be crass, crude and condemnable for the stick would be given more prominence than the carrot. A very unique and effective technique of encouragement involves leaders standing up and taking the rap when there is failure. This takes both a lot of courage and immense belief in the teams efforts. Going a step further when there is success the leader must take a back seat and let the team members believe that they accomplished it all on their own. The beauty of this approach lies in the fact that the leader has full faith in his/ her team and so ‘failure’ if any is deemed to be a collective failure with the leader standing up for his/ her team members.   1. Can you recollect 3 of the most demoralizing moments of your life? Who helped you overcome those terrible setbacks? How did you find the strength to bounce back?
  2. How will you use the learning from today’s post in the following situations
  • Your best friend has misplaced your favorite pen gifted by your grandfather and you are distraught and he is just as disturbed as you are.
  • Your colleague is great photographer and one of his photographs is tipped to win a major international competition. Unfortunately due to a technical error his entry is not taken into consideration for evaluation and he is terribly disappointed.
  • Your next door neighbor is very keen to get his son admitted to a prestigious school nearby but for reasons not known the bright child could not make it to the final admission list. Your neighbor and his wife are devastated and their anguish has spelled gloom in the house and the child too is terrified.

Playing second fiddle

The reality that we can aspire to be someone we crave to be does not lessen the pain of realizing that we may not realistically achieve it. The human ego, human temperament and human thinking often conspire to fool us into believing that we have it in us to be natural leaders and masters of our chosen field, vocation or team. To be a master, it is not just intelligence, pure expertise nor mere leadership skills that count; rather it is often a bit of everything and something sizeable in some key areas that counts. Just look at the ensemble of musicians who are giving a live performance and you will realize that the conductor is the master and though he does not play a single musical instrument during the performance, yet with his baton he has the entire entourage literally playing to his tunes.

In corporate world, seniority often is linked with leadership roles and yet, more often than not, we see young yuppies usurping leadership roles from the more experienced hands. The reason is simple, leadership requires not just experience and expertise but also vision and updated technological grasp. How do the more experienced hands cope with this reality that they may have missed the bus? Very often they are pragmatic and see the writing on the wall and take a cue and move out of the way either accepting the reality with dignity and playing along as a senior team member or they find another niche in the market place. The also ran’s in the political race to presidencies who may have lost their leadership aspirations typify those who nearly became masters but didn’t.  It may very little to do with their abilities or competencies but more to do with the political climate of the time, the perception of the electorate and occasionally blind luck.

Being a master is fraught with risks; risk of acceptance, risk of performance pressure and risk of failure. They also need to take critical decisions, often make unpopular choices, be ready to defend their actions especially when the going is tough and be prepared to take the flak of collective failure. Often becoming a master is not something that one aspires for but is delivered providentially. As would happened when a predecessor dies or moves out suddenly and the crown is passed on by virtue of being second in command. Here the pressure to perform and deliver becomes even more tricky for expectations are high, the circumstances perhaps not too favorable and personal confidence might not be at its peak.

Ironically each one of us is a master of our own life and we have to guide our own future, destiny and our successes. Thus even if we play just the second fiddle in an orchestra, we need to play it like a master second fiddle and then alone will we synchronize and harmonize the performance and win the applause. It is when we can master our own self that we can perhaps lay claim to greater leadership roles and when the honor is bestowed, one can lead with aplomb and leave a mark on the world.

Try this:

  1. Honestly ask yourself as to what aspect in your life you have a good mastery. Eg. Some might be excellent cooks, others good at teaching or others are meticulous and orderly. If you find that you really are not a maser in anything attempt to choose and aspect of life that you would like to master. Work on it immediately and stick to it till you master it.
  2. Ask yourself if you shy away from leadership roles. If yes ask yourself why you do it? Is it lack of knowledge, inability to commit, poor leadership skills, fear of failure etc. that makes you refuse leadership positions? Now work on a method to work on those chinks that have let you down from taking on a master’s position.
