You are defined by your thoughts. Your thoughts in turn are influenced by your attitude. Each of us has a different set of upbringing, education and experiences. The environment in which we grew up could have instilled in us the values we hold dear, the fears and hopes we carry within and helps us visualize opportunities and widens our horizons. All these factors contribute to the type of attitude we embrace which in turn fortifies us to meet the challenges of life and grasp the opportunities that come our way. We can take credit for the successes we attain and by the same yardstick take responsibility for not realizing our full potential. Far too often, we limit ourselves because we limit our thinking. Either we fear the worst or we doubt our own abilities.

To explore our potential and to leverage it one needs to focus on the following:

Clean up the cobwebs in the mind – Our mind is cluttered with thoughts that largely center around self preservation, safety, risk avoidance and following the set path. Occasionally we indulge in the luxury of visualizing something different, more outlandish, something that seems to be closer to our heart. Those who dare to explore that whole heartedly often do succeed because they have clarity and focus on what to do rather than what to avoid. Do not let the mind be filled with confusion, anxiety and be overwhelmed. Instead separate and segregate our numerous thoughts and arrange them in an orderly manner so that one begins to get clarity.

Rearrange the muddled up plans in the mind – Many of us suffer from wanting to do too many things. As a result we set ourselves multiple goals but lack the personal bandwidth to manage all the goals. We need to prioritize our goals and map out the specific action to be taken for each goal. This will help one focus better and avoid negative inputs like fear, depression and worry sabotaging our efforts.

Stop thinking and begin to act on our thoughts – Perhaps the one thing almost all of us are guilty of, is thinking too much and not taking enough decisive action. If we let our mind imagine the worst case scenario and blow it out of proportion then we will spend more time trying to ring fence the imaginary problems. Consequentially we delay taking action thereby derailing the original plans. While planning is essential one must put the plans in action if one has to make tangible progress. So keep at bay the self doubt, the feeling of inadequacy and the anxiousness and apprehensions and replace it with confidence, hope and faith in your abilities.

Review and caliber our action as required – Even the best laid plans may not factor in circumstances beyond our control or imagination. Reviewing the progress of plans and recalibrating the action required is critical to getting the project implemented. If we do not pause to review there is every possibility that you continue to progress in the wrong direction or that we take a circuitous route that is time consuming and costly. Never hesitate to admit you made a mistake or that you need to be realistic and cut your losses. Do not become dogmatic or egoistic lest they cloud your judgment. Try and be open to feedback, be open to correction and be ready to change.

Try these

  1. List out some goals that you have set for yourself but which have not yet taken off. Identify the reasons for the lack of progress on your part.
  2. Identify two initiatives that you started off earnestly but which failed/ disappointed you. Can you put your finger on the specific mistakes you made which you did not correct on time and led to the failure/ disappointment?
  3. Write down the 3 negative emotions you are guilty of harboring in your mind far too often. Now ask a few family members, friends and colleagues to share the one negative quality you display the most. Their responses could be an eye opener for you.

Unplug and reboot

12-Unplug and rebootA key reason we get stressed is because we continue to grapple with our problems by constantly attempting the tried and tested ways, instead of stepping back and letting the dust settle. If you have noticed muddy water that has been stirred up, it will be difficult to see through till you let the mud settle. The same happens with our problems and challenges. There is no better example than the numerous devices we use constantly, the mobile phones, the laptops and the near extinct desktops. The simplest way to get it going when it seems to have stalled is to simply switch of the power. Unplug the power and everything settles; then reboot and begin anew.

The best way to unplug from troubles is to distract your mind. This simply means forcefully directing your mind to other more pleasurable alternatives that are stress relievers. Take a walk, watch TV or read a book or get engaged in some activity that you enjoy like your hobbies. While trouble itself will not go away, your mind will become calm and you will be able to think more incisively and get more focus on how to proceed ahead.

Another way to unplug is to unburden. ‘Share your troubles and halve it’  is the principle that we leverage here.  We share our problem with people whom we trust and people who we believe would have some tangible solutions or at least make invaluable suggestions. While we share our problem we also subconsciously get greater clarity about the issue, our mind feels more relaxed that someone else is sharing our burden and the chances of getting some fresh insights from others to alleviate or tackle our burden is higher. Those listening to our problem also offer empathy, support and most of all give us some of their insights into coping with the problem.

The most common way to unplug is to sleep over a problem. This is tougher than it seems simply because a troubled mind would not easily get sleep. However, if one develops a style of setting aside the problem for a fair time, when we re-look the problem new thoughts and solutions seem possible. If one can literally sleep over a problem, the subconscious mind would often work in the background and conjure up possibilities that our conscious mind would not have generated. However one should not be like an ostrich burying its head in the sand hoping the troubles not seen would vanish.

Try these:

  1. Try some simple cross words or Sudoku. At first for those not used to solving such puzzles the challenge seems overwhelming. However, once you make an attempt and try it a few times, you get the hang of it and the challenge would not seem so daunting.
  2. Think of a time you managed to find a solution to a pressing problem by unplugging in the following ways
  • Indulging in your favorite hobby  or passion interest
  • Sharing your troubles and getting answers from another person
  • Sleeping over the problem and waking up to a very innovative solution

8-26 Jun14-See who you areWhat do you do when you are confused, disheartened and / or feeling listless? Who do you go to when you need to pep yourself up, solve problems or make life interesting? How would you go about feeling energized, overcoming obstacles and churning out creative ideas? While there may be many alternatives to choose from, the first step would be to delve within yourself and discover that you hold almost all the answers to all your worries, queries, difficulties and happiness.

It is all in your mind; unlock it and you will be a changed person. Focus on merely 3 things

Emotions. All of us become victims of our emotions especially negative emotions. Positive emotions like happiness, confidence, joy and optimism would enable one to overcome tough situations and challenges with flair and panache. However negative emotions like fear, anger, helplessness and pessimism would often muddle your thinking, cloud your judgment and push you to avoiding taking chances or becoming daring. Keeping our emotions in check would help us take balanced decisions, act proactively and temper our actions.

Thinking .Our thinking is largely influenced by our emotions. Our feelings have a major role to play in directing our thoughts and helping is focus on the moment. Apart from our emotions, our experiences, our knowledge and our personality have a major bearing on our thinking and subsequent action. Most times we are logical because as human beings we tend to rationalize and structure our thoughts within a framework we are aware of. However, when confronted with new challenges and problems our creative thinking would enable us to see new patterns, connect dots differently and help us discover or invent new solutions.

Attitude. Our attitude is shaped both by our emotions as well as our thinking. Apart from these two factors, our attitude is also shaped by our environment, the situation, our experiences and our personality. While we commonly talk about positive attitude and negative attitude, we must not forget our dimensions like attitude of gratitude, solutions oriented attitude, flexible and inflexible attitude as demonstrated by our stubbornness or indecisiveness.

It is evident that by focusing on our emotions, thinking and attitude we would be able to control our reactions, channelize our actions, influence the outcomes and even align the end result to be in tandem with our desire. This is being achieved simply because you are now directing your inner self to provide you with the necessary inspiration to overcome any obstacle that hinders your pursuit of your objectives. Your mind also harnesses your abilities to find solutions no matter how grave a situation or problem. Your relentless pursuit of your goals happens only when you are sufficiently motivated to keep going and that too is self generated by your ability to reign in or let loose your emotions, thinking and attitude.

Do you now realize that you are your own inspiration, solution and motivation?

Try this

  • Assume for a moment that you are marooned on an island with no hope of being rescued for a year at least. How would you go about surviving?
  • Identify a character in history who has inspired you? Can you specify the qualities / abilities/ achievements of that person that specifically appealed to you?
  • Every work / job entails repletion and unpleasant but unavoidable tasks. List out 3 such tasks that you have to cope with daily and find out ways to keep yourself motivated and inspired to do those tasks with enthusiasm.
