13-27- Two simple steps to make each day countPause for a moment and look back at the days gone by. Do you get the feeling that you could have a lot more if only we could re-live those days again? While regret for those days gone by wont help us now except to trigger a realization, we can make the best of today and the days to come that we will be fortunate to experience and enjoy. The trick lies in finding a way to wake up with determination and to go to bed with satisfaction.

So how does this mantra work?

A firm determination will …
Spark the desire for accomplishment
Fan the fires of enthusiasm
Light up the way ahead

When you go to bed with satisfaction you
Revel in the pleasure of achievement
Move closer to your cherished goals
Enjoy the bliss of sound sleep

ELSE

Without determination you will…
Be indecisive and anxious
You will a lot of incomplete tasks on hand
You will tend to give up at the first hint of trouble / difficulty

When you go to bed dissatisfied …
You will fret and fume over the wasted day
You will be left with too many irons on the fire and be stressed
Life will seem labored, insipid, stressed and painful every single night.

SO

To be determined
Have written down SMART goals (Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Realistic, Time bound)
Be organized and time conscious
Find a strong motivation to start and finish the task.

To ensure a satisfactory day end
Review the day before going to bed; enjoy the success of the day and work out ways to cope with the tasks left undone
Break down major tasks into smaller specific goals
Ensure your full quota of sleep and a clear conscience is said to be the best pillow.

Try this:

Make a list of the following

  • The tasks that you hate but which is unavoidable
  • The one task that is relatively easy but you constantly not doing it on time
  • The tasks that you enjoy doing the most
  • The one task that you would like to delegate to your best friend

Write down your reasons/ excuses for

  • Not doing the TRY THIS tasks in the previous post
  • Indulging in what you are constantly criticized for by family and or friends and or colleagues
  • Not making a sizeable financial contribution to your favorite charity
  • Being less successful than what you think you are capable of

How fortunate are we…

I wept because I had no shoes, until I saw a man who had no feet. Ancient Persian saying

Look around and you will find a hundred things to be grateful for but most times we are bitterly complaining, comparing and cursing our fate simply because we do not get what we want. As human beings we have the yoke of the seven deadly sins of Lust, Anger, Pride, Sloth, Envy, Gluttony and Greed. Each of these sins provokes the human mind to visualize images of having the second best or noting at all and therein lies the bane of the human race; our envy of others, our feeling of dissatisfaction and our propensity to rave and rant about the unfairness of life.

On the other hand if we consciously look out for people who are contented with life, you will find that almost all of them sport a smile, they are simply happy to be blessed with whatever they have and they have no materialistic desires or cravings. Study them from close quarters and we also realize that their happiness stems from their contentment and joy they experience by whole heartedly embracing the bounty they are blessed with. The issue that often worries us is that many of them seem to be in far worse of position than our own and yet they seem to be in a perpetual state of bliss. We cannot comprehend how those who have far lesser than us who are always cribbing can find so much of riches in their own life. Ironically their happiness and contentment make us more frustrated that they are happy and we are not.

Instead one must seek out how and why those less fortunate than us can live in peace happiness and contentment. The secret lies in their mindset and their attitude. Anyone who is happy has first of all decided to be happy. No matter what the circumstances they make it a point to see something to cheer about, something to warm their cockles and keep their spirits up. The next thing they consciously do is be grateful for whatever they have. Even if they have an illness they are grateful that it is nothing more serious. If they have lost something, they would be grateful that the loss is limited. The one thing they don’t do is compare what others have with they own possessions. This enables them to avoid feelings of envy, jealously, frustration etc. It also enables them to understand their own requirements better and aspire only for what they really need and therefore limit their wants and desires and quite often attaining it and thereby managing to live in a perennial state of happiness.

We too can change our mindset and adopt these practices. The first step is to realize that those who are happy are stress free for they have nothing really to worry about. Being stress free automatically improves our health, self belief and attitude. This must be followed up with the practices of appreciating the many blessings we get each day. It could be the pleasure of a bright lovely morning, the aroma of a hearty breakfast, the boisterous and carefree shouts of children at play or the success of a venture or a personal agenda. Obviously the toughest test to pass is a conscious decision not to be envious or frustrated at another’s wealth, possessions or successes. We must when such temptations lure us, remember that if we succumb then it is essential that we also compare the burdens, trials and tribulations of the other person too. After all no one ever lives on a bed of roses perennially.  The happiest person too carries his own cross and personal burden and his happiness is despite these woes that he has to shoulder. Are our problems, troubles or woes as bad as what many others go through?

Remember: “Being happy doesn’t mean that everything is perfect. It means that you’ve decided to look beyond the imperfections.”

Try this:

  1. Can you make a list of 5 things that you desperately craved for in your growing up years but were denied it. Can you think of reasons why you were denied it? On hindsight did those denials affect your life in any major way?
  2. You are in the hot seat in the game ‘Who wants to be a millionaire’ / Kon Banega Crorepati. You have Rs,50 lakhs and have to attempt the question to get Rs. 1 crore with no lif lines left.  If you lose you go back with just Rs.3,20,000. However if you win, you get an additional life line for the Rs.5 crore prize which is a roll of the dice. Here for the Rs.5 crore prize, a dice with 4 numbers is rolled and the number appearing will be matched with the answer on the corresponding box. If it is the right answer you get the prize of Rs.5 crores straight away. However if it is wrong then that answer is eliminated and you have to choose from the reaming 3 answers only. Would you attempt the Rs.1 crore question with a great chance of winning the Rs.5 crore prize or take the Rs.50 lakh prize and quit the game ?

Being content

Contentment is the one contentious issue that is at the heart of most human problems be it relationships, personal illness or simply being happy. For proof simply revisit the 7 deadly sins of Pride, Envy, Gluttony, Lust, Anger, Greed and Sloth and you will making a startling discovery that each of these sins is a result of lack of contentment. This is the right time for each of us to also pause and introspect as to what is it that will bring us contentment and peace. Words like more money, better job, an ideal spouse etc. are too vague and can at best be compared to a shadow not a clear blue print of what we seek.  How often has it occurred to us that we go to a restaurant and after placing our order see the waiter serving something looking more yummy on the neighboring table and then we crave for what is not ours. Contentment can begin only if we are clear in our mind and heart as to what we really want.

We are very indecisive about our choices simply because we have too many choices and each looks more appealing than the next.  How many of us own more than one watch? To tell the time one watch is more than enough yet there are many of us who would love to own more watches. The mobile phone is perhaps a more apt example in today’s context since we are fascinated by the features and style, rarely pausing to think if we would utilize anything more than the basic functions for 95% of our time. Too many choices therefore tempt us, trigger emotions of need and want finally ending up in us succumbing to our emotions.  A study of people buying at duty free shops at the airport lounges are an eye opener for in addition to the choices there is the lure of ‘duty free’ and the pride of premium shopping being done. Noting can be more ironic than seeing a teetotaler buy his quota of liquor simply because that is the done thing and is often flaunted to guests who like a nip or two.

The most content people are those who are pragmatic and limit their needs. This is done by the reverse process of accepting what is available with gratefulness and good cheer instead of actively seeking choices and then trying to match it to meet our emotional need and our financial wherewithal.  In a world that is consumer centric, marketing and advertisement driven and designed to lure the gullible, the temptations are too strong to be suppressed. There are other pressures too like social pressure, family pressures, emotional needs that fuel our desires and wants and the net result is that we pacify our desires without being content. In the days of yore, the most content people would perhaps have been the religious leaders and gurus for they chose to limit their wants and found that they attained bliss thereafter. Even that bastion is now crumbling and only a very conscious awareness can help us outline our bare necessities and thereafter we can enjoy the fruits of contentment.

Try this:

  1. Do a little spring cleaning and try to get rid of the accumulated stuff that you have never utilized during the past 6 months or those which you will never use in the future. It could be footwear, clothing, greeting cards, watches etc. Many a time some items would have sentimental value but if you really cross your heart most accumulated things are kept because we can’t bear to part with it.
  2. If your best friend coveted something that you own that you are passionate about but has little sentimental value would you spontaneously gift it to your friend? Eg. You have a very beautiful picture frame that you purchased because you loved it when you saw it. Now you friend admires it longingly and expresses a wish to own it. Will you gift it spontaneously?
