Start or start again

18- 04 - 02 Feb 18-Be ready to start againJanuary has passed by and perhaps some of us are left wondering why we missed the opportunity to do something different, something we are passionate about but something we are afraid to dare. It is possible that in the past we have not met with success when attempting something new. It is possible that it was difficult to cope with the criticism from others or that one ran out of enthusiasm when things got tough. Worse of all we may have miserably failed and fear attempting it again. Failure teaches one valuable lessons; the idea was not thought through well, it was perhaps badly executed, maybe you did not factor in some critical limitations you had, your idea was well before its time etc. Failure also tells you one more message; it is not the end, you can succeed a second time if you attempt, success that eluded is never permanent but more importantly failure is never fatal.

Very often it is not fear of failure that prevents us from starting again. It is often our tendency to procrastinate. This aided and abetted by our lack of motivation, lethargy, our reluctance to take chances and worse of all fear of criticism. However, look at starting / starting again from a different perspective and you will realize that there is no better time to begin than now.

It is an opportunity to prove yourself- Everyone is waiting for glory days. It can happen only once you begin. So it does not matter if you have failed before because it is the next time your start again that gives you the opportunity to prove yourself. Success is rarely a flash in the pan. It is the outcome of persistence, patience and passion. Improvement holds the key to success. You may have to work, rework and remodel your work till you achieve what you set out to do. Just do it.

It is a chance to give wings to your passion – It is possible that you are doing something that keeps your body and soul together or that sustains you. You do it largely out of compulsion to make a living. You will have to pick up courage to change your life by chasing your passion. You may have to rough it out, you may stumble and fall, you may face a bleak desolate lonely time. You could fail multiple times. Yet it is only when you start again with hope, faith and focus that you can get the winds of hard work and good luck give your wings the power to fulfill your passion.

It will test your skills, your spirit and your strengths – When you start again, it means you are hoping do something better than what you ever did. It is also a time for you to realize your true potential, bring to the fore your zeal and enthusiasm and to test the depths of your resilience, passion and patience. You will discover a different individual within you; a person far superior to the being you thought you are.

It will change, uplift and embolden you – When you make up your mind to try again, to not give up and to succeed it a true metamorphosis of your personality.  It changes your perspective of life, it will uplift your spirit to new heights and it will embolden you to dare to conquer. Your attitude, your mannerisms, your body language and your achievements will all reflect confidence, urgency, passion and success. Just try again and change your life.

Try these:

  1. Outline three critical changes you would like to bring about in your life. List out the excuses you have been giving for not bringing about these changes. Find an antidote to each excuse and begin the change NOW.
  2. What are your pet peeves or fears. Find a way to confront them and overcome them. try,Try, TRy, TRY.
  3. Your challenge this week is to attempt the following
  • Give yourself a major makeover –e.g. change in hairstyle / clothes / communication style / body language
  • Talk to at least 3 strangers for 5 minutes each at least
  • Do something you have never done before – e.g. cook / eat a vegan meal, draw a portrait of yourself, record a song in your voice, watch a movie in a foreign language, visit a cemetery at night, start writing a blog/ diary

An energy called YOU

28- An Energy called YOUThe sun is the universal source of energy but YOU are an equal source of energy, especially for the people around you and those in your circle of influence. If you didn’t cry at birth the doctors and the nursing staff, not to mention your parents would be very worried. Bet you put all your energy into crying loudly to announce your arrival and to proclaim that you carry with you, enough energy to transform the world. If you remained listless anytime during your tender growing up age, your parents would be very worried. It is your energy that was replicated in your zest that parents crave for. No doubt, too much energy can make you disruptive and mischievous but ask any parent and they would prefer that, to a dull submissive listless individual. Every individual is thus blessed with enough and more energy; but it needs to be channelized well.

You can ensure that your energies are best channelized by ensuring the following:

Having the right thoughts – Every action is triggered by the thoughts one has. Hence it is critical that one needs to be able to train the mind to be positive, confident and proactive. In a dynamic world, where there is constant turbulence minute to minute, our thoughts too keep churning at a rapid pace. It can oscillate from one extreme of unbridled happiness to the other extreme of despondency depending on the happenings around. Training the mind to have the right thoughts consists of being balanced in good times and in bad, developing the art of seeing the glass full no matter how desperate  the situation and being able to focus on a win win solution at all times.

Ensuring you have the right emotions – Emotions in simplistic terms are thoughts being converted into feelings. Since it is the thoughts that are converted into feelings, the feelings expressed would display the same characteristics of the original feelings. Negative emotions like anger, frustration, jealousy etc. would largely reflect the thoughts that triggered the emotion as much as hope, confidence, happiness etc. reflect the positive thoughts. It is possible though that despite entertaining negative thoughts like fear, anxiety, hopelessness etc. we can still retain control over our emotions and channelize them in a positive manner. E.g. Seeing failure as a stepping stone to success.

Taking the right actions – Both thoughts and emotions that remain bottled up merely traumatize a person mentally. It is the when one channelizes these thoughts and emotions into tangible action that the energy in you gets momentum and coverts itself into results. The right actions are overwhelmingly determined by thoughts and emotions but to get it right one has to take into consideration the ground realities. E.g. Anger is a perfectly legitimate thought and emotion when plans fail or things are messed up because of tardy execution. Expressing it is also a perfectly valid action to ensure that those responsible for triggering it, realize their folly. However, anger if expressed in a hostage like situation can be very counterproductive.

Since you are a very potent source of energy, you should be aware at all times about the tremendous power you have and ensure that you use it responsibly. More importantly learn to use it with confidence and integrity by aligning your thoughts, emotions and actions.  

Try these

  1. Think of a few situations where you were embarrassed by your own thoughts emotions and actions / /behavior. E.g. when you lost your temper or did not stand up for what was right or when you cheated in an exam etc.
  2. In the recent past did you succumb to the following:
  • Shouting at someone
  • Cheating in a game
  • Using foul language
  • Telling a lie
  • Becoming jealous
  • Intimidating someone

Be energetic always

14- Be charged up

The one trait that energizes is the enthusiasm that a person exudes. Some people display that in their walk and poise, others in their speech and mannerisms and others through their serenity and insightful observations and comments. Energy is transmitted to those around and the entire environment is charged up.  There is greater expectation, there is keen anticipation and certainly every one would benefit from the positive vibrations that emerge. It is essential that someone spark that environment with their energy. It is possible for each one of us to be the match that sparks the energy and lifts up the spirit, the participation and the environment around. To be that enthusiastic spark that energizes, be aware of the following.

Self belief – Unless you believe that you are unique, that you have a contribution to make and that you can make a difference to someone, it is impossible to transmit your energy. Without you feeling your own energy, it is not possible to let others experience your passion. Unless you begin to value your worth, appreciate your potential, realize your strengths and become aware of the immense influence you have on the world around you, you cannot have self belief. Value the appreciative feedback you receive, know that the thank you’s you receive mean you have made a contribution valued by someone and be aware of the energy others transmit to you when you interact with them and you will discover your self belief !

Inner spirit – While self belief gives you confidence, it is your inner spirit that will ignite your desire to utilize and channelize your self belief into tangible benefits for others. It will influence your attitude, encourage you to move out of your comfort zone and take risks, help you identify people and occasions that could benefit from your energy. You can let your inner spirit guide you by listening to your heart, your conscience and your deepest feelings. Simple things like listening patiently, being helpful to others in distress, the empathy you show others are significant indicators of your inner spirit.

Unbridled Enthusiasm – Your enthusiasm must be spontaneous, unconditional and in ample measure. You can discover this when you become a willing and active participant in all that happens around you. When you start contributing, when you share your thoughts and ideas, when you make suggestions and when you take the initiative you will discover that it is your unbridled enthusiasm that is motivating you to get involved with the goings on around you. Ever noticed how enthusiastic you become when you are watching your favorite sport or TV show. Notice how you are ready with a pen and paper to jot down the recipes shown in a cookery show? It is the same spirit of enthusiasm that will generate the energy within you that you transmit to others.

Passionate Motivation – Often your enthusiasm will flagg, your patience will wear thin and suddenly the spirit starts to droop. This is because you lack the motivation that is the hall mark of all successful people. It is your inner motivation that is more critical but the external motivation in seeing your energy being harnessed by others also acts as an injection that gives quick results. Your motivation is what drives you even when you don’t get immediate results, it is the flashlight that seeks out the openings in the maze of confusion, it provides you the reason to share every ounce of your energy. You motivation fuels your effort, it makes your efforts worthwhile even though you cannot see the results and it ( your motivation) is the only charger that is plugged into an omnipresent energy source YOU.

  1. Name 3- 5 individuals who you have personally met, who you feel are energetic, enthusiastic and impressive. Can you identify 3 traits / qualities / mannerisms that exude their confidence and effectiveness?
  2. What are the various things you do / steps you take / preparations you make (apart from preparation of the presentation itself) when going to make a presentation?
  3. From the following list, identify 3 which you believe you can work on, to make you even more effective, confident and energetic.
  • Better grooming
  • Improving your dressing sense/ attire
  • Working on your non verbal communications
  • Adopting better manners and etiquette’s
  • Improving your communication skills
  • Changing your style and adopting/ adapting a style of someone you admire
  • Using feedback to improve

The 5 W’s of Life

30 -The 5W's of LifeX Y and Z have always got their share of glory or infamy depending on how much you liked algebra and geometry but it is the alphabet W is that we focus on today. To begin with W has a rather awkward pronunciation but more importantly all progress is largely dependent on the answers to the 5W’s supported of course by the equally oddly pronounced H. Today we reflect on the critical role of the 5 W’s in shaping our life, our attitude and our successes.

Who am I! Your individuality is what makes you unique. Even identical twins would stand out from each other because of the differences that mark each one out. By being aware of our individual uniqueness, one can focus on strengthening ones attitude, skills, behavior and talents to contribute the world around us. Of course our uniqueness would also invite criticism, questioning, curiosity, suggestions and admiration from others who cannot possibly comprehend our individuality. Do not let that disturb you but do pay heed to it for there could be a lot of learning that emanates from such feedback. Most importantly be proud of who you are; faults, limitations, weakness notwithstanding.

What lies ahead? If the future was predictable life would be terribly boring. The wonder of waking up each day lies in the abundant mysteries that each day will unravel. There would be surprises, there would be shocks, there would be laughter, there would be tears. We value each emotion because we are blessed with the gift of experiencing these varied emotions. When we dare to explore, experiment, engage differently we are setting ourselves up for surprises and opportunities that never existed before in our limited vision. There is risk but there is larger glory beyond our comfort zone.

When life is a challenge what do I do? Each one of us has his/ her own personal challenge to cope with daily. The scope and gravity of the challenge would vary but we cannot side step these challenges. At times we get overwhelmed, other times we feel weighed down, may a time we are frustrated and almost often we get irritated and annoyed when having to deal with niggles and issues that never seem to end. Most times we have to deal only with irritants but it is the big challenges like coping with life threatening illness, being suddenly handled a pink slip, coping with a way ward offspring, getting into a financial mess bordering on bankruptcy etc. that test our character, our will, our capacity to cope and our resolve to overcome. Self belief is critical but calm rational thinking is essential too. Seeking help would not be demeaning neither would taking tough decisions be embarrassing. What is essential is not to give up, give in or surrender but to take the tough road to redemption with firm resolve.

Where the choices are equally alluring how do I decide? Every moment of your life you are making choices. Even as you read this you have the choice to continue reading or do something that you believe is more beneficial, worthwhile or important. Your choice must be based on what you think is most relevant at that point of time. It could be based on facts, it could be based on urgency, it could be based on intuition but what is important is that whatever your choice and the outcome, you must have no regrets.

Why do I feel apprehensive about the future? Frankly there is nothing that you can do about the future except to anticipate and prepare to face it. Even then, the future always surprises with its unexpected bounties and occasionally jolts us with unexpected shocks. If one were to dispassionately assess the happenings in one’s life, for the overwhelming majority the future that overcame us had largely always aided and abetted our growth, prosperity and happiness. It is true that we would all have experienced unexpected sorrow, failure and disappointment along the way but they would be far, few and in-between. A better way to tackle the future would be to try to create it; trust your instincts, take chances, work hard, follow your dreams and you will find you have arrived at your destination.

Woman’s world

5- 8Mar 15 - Women's WorldOn women’s day, I think this is an appropriate post for the numerous ladies who subscribe and / or read this blog. It is equally relevant if not extremely important for the gentlemen to go through the post to appreciate the finer nuances of the term Sexy from a woman’s perspective.

Like any normal human being, every individual would like to be noticed, appreciated and respected no matter what their age, gender or economic background. A woman is blessed by nature to be a shade different from men in both physical form as also in their abilities, their mental makeup and their style. A woman often multitasks with seamless competence, has a greater resolve, is more committed to family responsibilities and becomes the pivot of a happy family. It is equally true that a women takes the effort to be well dressed, spends time and energy to be well groomed without compromising on their core responsibilities.

The woman one admires is not just the appealing physical form but the entire package that can include a number of roles being played by the same individual. She can be a dutiful daughter, an affectionate sister, a faithful wife, a protective parent and a diligent individual in any role. Remarkably, a woman will revel in any of these roles for she understands the criticality of her contribution in each of these roles. She will applaud, scold, worry, appreciate and chasten with equal aplomb for she is driven by love, motivated by bonding and duty bound by nature.

A woman’s personality lies in her dexterity, her vivaciousness, her independence and her commitment. She can be fiercely protective of those she loves, unabashedly partial to those she is fond of, acutely distressed when a loved one is in pain and exceedingly exuberant when in the company of boisterous, like minded people. In each of these varied roles a woman will be able to unobtrusively hold her own and perhaps that is the reason men tend to discount the women’s role and instead direct attention to perceived short comings of the lady. Numerous times the male chauvinist fails to give credit to the woman who is independent, self confident and individualistic.

While a women’s day, like a birthday is designated for euphoric celebrations, make each day of yours a special day; give expression to your thoughts, feelings and actions with confidence and passion. Gentlemen, appreciate the women in your life; notice how they make it more colorful, comfortable and cheerful.

Let your dreams lead you

ImageFor a rather long stretch of time for a variety of reasons my blog posts were not being regularly updated. While the issues that confronted me were varied, on hindsight none of them were serious enough to qualify as valid excuse for not keeping up with my target of writing at least once a week. It was therefore very fortuitous that I came upon the above quote, which kick started me to get back to my writing.

It is said that one cannot be pushed from behind or pulled from the front but has to be driven from within, to achieve and attain success. It is in this context that a dream is a must for every individual so that it becomes a goal and a reason for us to aspire, perspire and acquire success. With a dream comes the waking up to reality; with the dream comes the desire to act; with the dream comes the possibility of achievement.

Waking up to reality: Dr.Abdul Kalam famously said that ‘A dream is not what you see in your sleep; it is something that does not let you sleep’. Translate your interests, passion and dreams into a tangible, vivid and positive goal. With this goal as the focus, outline the logical steps to be taken to move towards the goal. Obviously there would be obstacles that loom large, difficulties that seem insurmountable, self-doubt about your own capabilities all of which nudge you to realize that you have to be prepared to accept the reality that your dreams are attainable provided you are ready to pursue your dream with pragmatism, optimism and enthusiasm.

Dreams evoke the desire to act: While the reality would be challenging and terrifying at times the dream itself would be alluring, exciting and exceptionally rewarding. It is these enticement that help you take proactive steps to pursue your dreams by taking your first steps that you have already visualized and outlined. Even when there are setbacks or frustrations the effort taken will never be in vain for you would have traversed quite a distance, made significant commitments by way of various resources and turning back or giving up would be not an option at all, Perhaps you would pause to review, re strategize and or rework your plans but the dream would be your goal.

Strong possibility of achievement. It is the compelling and tantalizing lure of the dream that will always provide the pull and magnet for effort to bear fruit. You can always make your dreams come true once you have begun in faith, proceeded with gusto and believed in yourself. Watch out and avoid falling prey to criticism, setbacks, resource limitations and fear. A worthwhile dream will always fuel your spirit, nourish your desire and propel you to take the leap of faith that bridges the chasm between giving up and getting up.

I just did it… you can do it too…dream big…stay cool…receive in abundance.

Nurturing the spirit in the New Year

“It is inevitable that some defeat will enter even the most victorious life. The human spirit is never finished when it is defeated…it is finished when it surrenders.”Ben Stein

For me personally, the above quote is the perfect one to begin the New Year’s first post. After setting a personal target to write every day in 2010 when I began this blog, I was delighted when by December 2010, I had managed around 345 posts. After a diligent start to 2011, both reader fatigue and personal fatigue induced me to scale down my target to just around one post a week. Even this I realized was tough going and by December end 2011 I was just happy that the year had ended albeit with very little output to showcase on this blog. Then I chanced upon this quote and that injected fresh life into my blogging endeavor and here I am back with the hope of doing  much more than in 2011.

There would many like me who have enjoyed the high points of success but have also experienced the low point of drudgery that sometimes overwhelms us. This is inevitable, but surrendering meekly to it is optional. For almost every individual, life by and large is fairly routine, occasionally stressful, sporadically successful but largely very boring. At various points in this cycle of life, the temptation to give in and surrender meekly is often overwhelming, but then the spirit of survival takes over and coerces us to take charge of our life. It is this spirit that we are all blessed with which needs to be nourished so that it powers us from within to tide over the bumps, the hurdles, the pitfalls and the chasms that we need to cross in our journey called life.

This is my 4 A’s formula to help nourish the spirit.

Accept with grace. Good or bad, pleasant or unpleasant, bountiful or frugal these are extremes in a continuum and we need to accept that in the journey of life we would be getting our share of these. Rather than crave for more of good or whine about our troubles we should calmly and deliberately focus on acknowledging the fact that we receive these only because we are alive. Life by itself is a grace of the almighty and what comes with it needs to be accepted as it is. By accepting ourselves unconditionally we are ensuring that our spirit is fully charged up within us.

Avoid negativity. Finding fault, making comparisons, being dissatisfied are very human traits. Notice that these are never found in the animal kingdom and yet we proudly claim to be a more evolved species.  The irony is obvious and so we would be better off taking a leaf out of the book of the animal kingdom and wake up each morning with the hope of a better day.  By avoiding the negatives we would be letting our spirit shine brighter.

Appreciate gratefully. As an evolved species we have the power of communication, higher level of intelligence, the special gift of being creative and the individuality that is so unique to each one.  We need to realize that with these special gifts we are empowered to meet any challenge. Once we appreciate this power within us, we would be reinforcing our spirit.

Align harmoniously.  We need to align our life to our goals, our dreams, our expectations by soaking in the grace that we are blessed with, eliminating the negativity that we are tempted to embrace and by adding zest to our living by appreciating the blessings given in abundance to us. When we align our thoughts, hopes, aspirations, expectations to our material, spiritual, intellectual and social wealth we would realize that the spirit engulfs us from within and we radiate that spirit in our thoughts, words and deeds.

Try this:

  1. Play a game of snakes and ladders with a group consisting of someone much older, another person of around your age but of the opposite sex and a child. Notice that the group is heterogeneous and there is an equal probability of each person winning.  Can you see life as this game being played by characters not too different from those playing with you. The only difference is that in the game of life, everyone is assured of a win.
  2. List out all your negative thoughts, fears, worries etc. one below the other. When you run out of ideas to include in this list, realign this list in order of your most worry some thoughts. Adjacent to this list, against each point write down all the blessings, positive points, the skill sets that you posses. Once you have listed this in the next column write down all your hopes, your aspirations, your dreams. Now study the table and put a line under the last row where each of the columns is filled in. Cut of all the items in the other two columns against which there is no item in any of the adjacent column. Put a time frame column adjacent to the dreams column and enter a time frame to achieve each of your dreams, hopes and aspirations. Make this your practical horoscope and envisage the future for yourself.

How to ignite the spirit of courage

When we look around us there are times when we feel dispirited, disheartened and deflated and it just gets worse when there are many others like that around us. We are then left wondering if there is any hope for us and if life has anything meaningful t to offer us. These are times when we wished we didn’t have to go through this painful and apparently hopeless process. No matter who one is, no matter how rich and powerful, no matter how intelligent or smart one is, low points in life will always be a part of living. Death is one low point that is a great leveler and is the one common denominator of sadness, pain and hopelessness that binds all living beings.

The average human being is often commonly plagued by the lows that follow death of a loved one,  fear of failure and worry about the future. Death is a reality that we must make peace with and accept with equanimity. It spares none and can come most unexpectedly. While affection and love will always tug at the heart and trigger emotions of various hues we need to pick up the pieces and get back on track at the earliest. Since human beings cannot remain isolated, unemotional or unaffected one would need to delve into the personal resources of rationale, courage and acceptance which would form the foundation of the spirit of courage that will pull us out of the quagmire of grief.

Fear of failure is omnipresent too. No one can ride on past success for each one of us has to script a new success story everyday. Ironically, the fear of failure is just as prevalent amongst the rich as much as it is prevalent amongst the poor, it is found in equal measure amongst both the brilliant and those who are below average and spares neither the urban population nor the rural folks. Since we cannot insulate ourselves from this fear the next best thing we can do is to ensure that fear of failure does not overwhelm us. Self belief is the key to open the doors of courage. Resilience and hard work provide the steps to the ladder of success.  It also helps to be planned, prepared and persistent for then we would be better equipped to face failure without hurting ourselves too much in the process.

Since the future is the unknown that is both a mystery and an opportunity rather than view it with trepidation, we must look at it in anticipation. View the future like a hand of cards dealt by the dealer when playing a game of bridge or poker. It is only once we have the cards that we can play the game.  Just as we look forward with anticipation eager to know the hidden cards, which if it is a poor hand we fold and wait for the next game, so too must we see each day. Patience, hope and the daring to take calculated risks be it in playing or packing up are the mantras to muster courage and fire up the spirit. Fearing the future is perhaps the most passive and sure fire way to lose ones way in the maze called life. Instead anticipate the changes, prepare for it and plod into it with gusto and presto we discover the truth ‘that life is an adventure to be lived not a mystery to solved.’

The easy way to tackle challenges

The challenge we face each day is to make each day a pleasurable one, an interesting one and one devoid of irritation, boredom and  dislike. The tough part of this is facing the reality that our daily routine is by and large well set and a good part of that routine is repetitive, stressful and / or  boring. The only consolation we can take is that the pattern is true for almost all of us and so we do not feel less privileged. Yet, when we see the enthusiasm and the energy and the euphoria that some people manage to display every single day, we wonder how they do it.

A clue to this can perhaps be got by examining our student days. If we simply looked back at our student days we would realise that we always favoured some subjects over others and we would happily spend a lot of time on those subjects. As for those subjects we disliked we tackled it with disdain, defiance and disinterest. In effect, when we were forced to study what we didn’t like, the effort was too hard and painful whereas what appealed to us was welcomed whole heartedly and enthusiastically. The secret then is to get to like what we have to do.

Is it possible for us to like what we have to do? Very few of us would like to take an injection for it is painful. Yet when we are left with no option we pluck courage from our deepest recess and go through the process. Perhaps the thought of getting relief or the fear of more painful consequences of not taking the injection spurs the person to voluntarily subject himself/ herself to the pain of an injection. Similarly the urge to score excellently or the fear of failure would have egged us on to study subjects we didn’t really fancy. In both examples there is a positive end result that actually directs our actions. If we can get some of this attitude to guide us in our daily life we would find life less stressful and perhaps even discover that in fact life is very invigorating. Overcoming our fear holds the key to beginning to like what we have to do.

It is not enough just to overcome our fear or reservations about things that we do not really relish but cannot avoid. To really want to relish whatever comes ones way it is essential that we have the right spirit, add a liberal dose of creativity to make things interesting, take occasional setbacks as experiences to learn from and be energetic enough never to get bogged down. Eg. A telephone operators job is perhaps one of the most repetitive and thank less jobs that can get boring, stressful and insipid. Yet some of the best telephone operators would sound as energetic at close of day as they would at the start of the day. Their success lies in visualising themselves as key cogs in the corporate communication wheel and also believing that they are the critical touch point for their corporate. The ultimate lesson is that one finds it easy to meet daily challenges if  one can  see oneself in the right perspective, as influencers in the spheres that we have to commit to, whether we forced into or otherwise.

 Try this:

  1. You have  met with an accident and have to be  confined to bed rest for 2 months. By nature you are an outdoor person. How will you cope with this forced home stay? What activities will you indulge in? How would ensure that you are being productive and not bored?
  2. You are basically a person who prefers the indoors. Due to a sudden crisis you are forced to accompany a group of 50 school children to 2 week outdoor activity camp. You are aware that the children are boisterous and need to be kep engaged all the time. You just dislike the whole assignment but have no choice. How will you ensure that the trip is a success?

The gain from pain

Broadly speaking one will experience 3 types of pain. The physical pain is what we are most familiar with like breaking our bones or getting grazed when one falls. The emotional pain is one we experience when our emotions are put to test like in case of a broken relationship be it with parents, spouse, siblings or children. The psychological pain is one we may be subject to but not acutely conscious off as will be the case if we are the butt of jokes amongst classmates or if one is constantly being belittled or humiliated. Almost all of us would have suffered from one or more of such pain but in most cases we have overcome it and gone on to forget it too.

Yet when we are asked to look back and recollect some of the more painful memories it is the emotional and psychological pain that often comes immediately to mind. Painful experiences leave a deep and sordid aftermath which can be life altering whichever way one takes it. For those who are deeply scarred by the event will always walk in the shadow of that pain and will attribute all their failures and miseries to that pain. On the other hand those who are more resilient and positive will use that painful learning to fire up their spirit and conquer their fears and hurt brought about by the pain. Herein lies the test of the true spirit of life – will you conquer pain or will you let the pain imprison you? For every Helen Keller and Douglas Bader there are a thousand others who give in to their pain and commit suicide. While it might be pretty easy to pontificate about pain ( as I am doing right now) it is the person in the line of fire who has to experience the agony of the pain. One never knows but tomorrow it could be either mine or your turn to be part of that painful experience.  Death of a loved one is a pain that each of us would have experienced at some point. In all probability we would have soon taken the rational bypass  that death is a reality and consoled ourselves that we have to face the reality. However if the person who died is in the prime of youth or a child the inevitable question that haunts us is ‘Why?’.  More traumatic to deal with is the pain brought on by  a drastic physical change the like losing a limb or being a paraplegic, for these are life altering not just for the person but also for the family. Not far behind is the pain of seeing a loved one suffer from dementia, Alzheimer’s, motor neuron disease etc. all of which have no cure as on date and yet slowly wastes the body away causing deep anguish to both the patient and to the family. Can we realistically handle such pain?

Yes one can minimize the impact of such pain through a mixture of pragmatism, counseling, prayer and positive thinking. Pragmatism will help one comprehend the reality with fortitude. Counseling will alleviate the  panic and help channelize ones energy into acceptance of the reality. Prayer is the one channel that will send a person tons of hope to cope. Positive thinking will provide the oxygen that nourishes body and mind, strengthen ones resolve and provide us a shield to guard against depression and a feeling of hopelessness.

Remember: Pain is inevitable; suffering is optional.

Try this:

  1. As and when you can, try walking barefoot on a tar road or on cobble stone walkway for at least 5 – 10 minutes. What are your feelings? Do you give up even before you have walked a  100 meters? Do you get irritated saying ‘ Why am I doing such a stupid thing?’ To experience the pain brought about by fear you can visit a nearby zoo or snake park and try  (with permission of course) handle a non poisonous snake.
  2. Plan a visit to a local old age home/ a hospice / home for the mentally challenged and spend a day with the inmates. How do you think the staff of these places motivate themselves to work for those who are in pain and suffering?
